I'd say it's going well! The sun decided to come back out, literally and figuratively, which is great for my new plane photography hobby lol. Mother's Day was alright, we went to my aunt and uncle's with my dad to barbecue. First Mother's Day without my mom, which was rough, but it's just a celebration to capitalism more than anything, so keeping that in mind helped when seeing all the cards and flower displays at the store. I did allow myself the opportunity to feel sad by walking up to the card section and picking out the one I know I'd have gotten her (it had butterflies, which she loved).

Thanks for letting me journal like this. It really does help to write it out, kind of like writing a letter and not sending it to anybody.

Anyway, have some pictures. I'm getting into photography again, and I'm excited to share :)

Basically this, for me. I want my devices to be more dedicated to a singular purpose, so I'm not tethered to my phone all day. Having a camera, an MP3 player, and a handheld makes my actions feel more purposeful. Building off that, having a "one-stop-shop" type of device or service or anything really imo makes the overall experience worse. Think Wal-mart versus a dedicated electronics store or something.

This week is going well so far. Bought a new camera so I've been really excited to try it out. I mostly take pictures of planes, and I'm trying to experiment more with shutter speeds and aperture and yadda. I live directly under a landing pattern for the local airport, so it's not hard for me to time a plane landing and get a decent shot.

Here's a Delta 717 coming in:

As a bonus, not only am I rediscovering my adolescent love for photography, I'm getting outside more. I've actually met some of my neighbors doing this. And I think the anticipatory aspect of waiting for a plane to come in gives me something to look forward to as well, so that's pretty cool.

I believe Tim means to say that the spread of misinformation can be linked to the rise of Flat Earthers. That if we can only trust what we see before us, and we see a flat horizon, we can directly interpret this visual to mean that the Earth is flat. Thus, if we cannot trust our own eyes and ears, how can future courtroom evidence be trusted?

Week's going pretty well so far. I recently got back into photography, and I happen to live directly under a landing pattern for the local airport, so I've been trying to get decent shots of planes landing. It's a lot of fun watching the flight radar, tracking flights, and running out to set up my camera in time. I only have a short moment before they dip behind the trees, but I'm getting there! I'm also getting some pretty good shots of the moon from my balcony. This camera's from 2017 and is used, but it's not bad!

Having to prepare myself for this weekend though. CW: grief: this will be the first time we celebrate my mom's birthday without her, and I already know it's going to be equal parts hard, surreal, and sad. We're going to go out and see my dad and just hang out, not really sure what the plan is. My aunt wants to release butterflies or something, which seems a bit trite and exploitative to the animals, but to be honest Bees, I'm not trying to get into that. We're all grieving in our weird little ways. I think I'll try and find her old camera equipment, swap this bag I'm using out for her old one.

But enough about that. It's good to let it out and all, but I'm not trying to dwell on that shit, so have some pictures!

Amateur balcony gardener throwing stuff in dirt and seeing what grows reporting in! My garden is small but mighty, and it's all coming together pretty well! My kale seeds have seriously hit the ground running, and I'm so excited to transfer the sprouts. The pumpkin sprouts are looking pretty good too, and it helps that I actually planted them during the right time this year, so I'm stoked about that. If I can just get one single tiny pumpkin this fall, I'd be sooo happy... Microgreens are looking good too, not taking off like the kale seeds did but I'm still proud of 'em for being themselves! My catnip seeds are starting to pop up a little too!

I also have some starters because lazy, and they are taking off! My cats go nuts for fresh catnip, it's pretty neat :)

Pictures!

Kale sprouts with their younger sibling microgreens on the left.

Pumpkin sprouts with sunflowers, catnip, chamomile, and huh what was that other one I'm pretty sure I labeled it.

Check out this catnip starter! I keep trimming it for my goobers but the leaves just keep coming back bigger!

I am now motivated to clean up my balcony and share the rest with you all :-D

I have it on good authority that it’s practically a jungle on a balcony

Now who told you that! :D no supplemental lights being used, just natural sunlight from about 8AM to 6-7PM give or take. I'll have to rearrange and move them closer to the end, there's a spot that receives more direct light than where they were. Think they're just needing more light?

I really ought to just set up some sort of secured platform on the railing and get them out there during the day. Thinking that's a weekend project after we go to the farmer's market!

godzilla_lives ,
@godzilla_lives@beehaw.org avatar

That would be great, thank you! I just moved them to a better spot so hopefully they get the light they need. I'll report back with results!

There's that word again: accident,an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance.

But the presence of a task force of public servants who close streets, push debris out of lanes, sweep glass off of car seats, tend to injured commuters and assemble totaled cars on a City Towing truck indicates that the circumstances of this crash are foreseen, in fact, expected. What I witnessed that night was a publicly funded apparatus, augmented by private medical companies, that exists because we know these crashes will happen and have planned around them.

This was a great read, thank you for sharing. Articles like this make me feel less crazy, that the society I've found myself in isn't normal just because it exists in its present state.

Chugging through the week, but work is looking pretty chill so far and the phones aren't too loud, so I'm grateful. My garden is looking good so far, really pleased with my kale. I keep grabbing my wife and going "look, it's taking off!" at least every day, lol. Some of my other seed trays are doing their own thing too, and it's giving me something to look forward to this summer. It's usually so fucking hot here, but that should make for spicier peppers >:D

Went to the farmer's market on Saturday, which was great. We usually try to sleep in, but waking up early let us take back our weekend a little bit and we came home with some locally grown teas and other goodies.

Dreamed about mom the other night. It didn't ruin my day the way the first dream did though. It actually became lucid because I knew it couldn't possibly be real, so it was kind of neat. I woke up and wrote a poem about it.

What's Growing On, Beehaw? Weekly Garden Chat

There are about a hundred potted perennials out on my front lawn right now as the latest wintry mix hits our area, and someone dropped off a huge box of cell trays and small pots to us yesterday. Some of them will go to our local library for their gardeners workshops and to prep for their annual plant sale fundraiser, some will...

My kale sprouts are coming in very nicely! Trying from seed again this year and I'm feeling good about it. The heatwave just wrecked them last year and I wasn't on my game with watering enough, but not this time! I also have some other seeds starting to sprout as well: camomile, catnip, sunflowers and microgreens, as well as a few pumpkin sprouts that are starting to make themselves known.

My pepper plants are starting to bounce back from being over-wintered, and they always produce a big yield so I'm excited. I've added a few new species to the mix so we'll see how that goes. I'm looking forward to making hot sauce again, but this time I'll have ghost peppers to add to the mix >:)

My apartment balcony looks like a jungle, and it is my happy place, lol.

It's going okay. Tuesday was very difficult for me due to some sad dreams that just set the course for the rest of my morning. I'm very lucky to work a job where I'm able to take off if I need a mental health day, so I took advantage of that at wife's insistence. Yesterday was better, and today is "fine" so I'm just looking forward to the weekend now. Haven't worked out this week so I'm going to make sure to do something today, but the after-work walks with wife help get us moving and transition into a calmer evening, so it's not a total wash, exercise-wise. The plan for today is listen to music that makes me happy, drink more water, no alcohol, and carry on.

Rankin County. They have a goon squad that's gotten away with murder for decades.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/us/rankin-county-mississippi-sheriff.html

Content Warning, violence

For nearly two decades, a loose band of sheriff’s deputies roamed impoverished neighborhoods across a central Mississippi county, meting out their own version of justice.

Narcotics detectives and patrol officers, some who called themselves the Goon Squad, barged into homes in the middle of the night, accusing people inside of dealing drugs. Then they handcuffed or held them at gunpoint and tortured them into confessing or providing information, according to dozens of people who say they endured or witnessed the assaults.

Used to work with a woman who's brother was pulled over and had the shit beaten out of him by the Rankin Sheriff's dept. And this isn't some backwater town either, it's a highly-developed metropolitan area.

It's a Chinese-owned brand running Android 11, but I love my Unihertz Titan Slim. It's essentially a rip-off of a Blackberry Key2 that I bought off Amazon after a few too many beers and it took a while to get used to typing with a keyboard again, and it's objectively dumb as hell, but yeah man, button phone. Sigh, now if someone would come out with a new slide-out keyboard style..

Balcony gardener here. Had a death in the family so my garden was neglected unfortunately, but it's bouncing back (as am I). My cabbages aren't as big as they were last year, likely because I used slightly smaller pots and let them wilt too often, but wife should be able to turn them into kraut for sausage dogs. We did that last year and ended up with a pretty decent jar-full, which was pretty cool.

This year I over-wintered my peppers for the first time, and they're starting to bounce back so I'll probably transfer them to larger pots soon. I'm already looking forward to watching them come in :) they're my favorite plants to grow. I have shishito peppers, snack peppers, cayenne, jalapeno, and dragon roll peppers. I like my peps!

Mint is looking okay, it's coming back after being neglected, but it's basically a weed so I'm not really worried. I'll have to buy more basil starters, I didn't prune it well and it didn't survive being over-wintered.

This is all on top of the usual annuals and ivy and ferns and such. It's basically impossible for me to go to the grocery store without bringing home whatever discount plant I find, lol. I don't have too much room to work with, but I'm doing some vertical gardening as well by mounting shelves to put smaller pots on. It looks good from the street too. I get compliments when I'm out there, and it always makes my day :D

Thank you Lally, I really do appreciate that. It has helped me heal greatly. As odd as this sounds, I feel lucky that it occurred during the end of winter. So as the world begins to show a return to life and color, my own little world is doing the same :) I actually have some plants of hers that I'm tending to now. So many snake plants to propagate!

My wife and I made a deal that I have to bring the dog when I go anywhere that sells plants, just so I can’t carry as many to the register.

Now I'm just imagining a dog in a cart covered in grocery store ferns 😄 but that's a great compromise!
