The last launch really was incredible. It managed to land relatively softly and pull off all of the flips while it’s fins were literally falling apart. Obviously the fins weren’t supposed to be falling apart, but it’s crazy that it still landed.

The last 2 launches have gotten to (near) orbit just fine, although I think the payload door failed on one of them iirc. If they were carrying payloads they probably would have been able to deliver them (I don’t think they have made payload fairings for things other than starlink yet though)

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

No one cared when Astra’s first three attempts (with a much less ambitious design) recently failed to reach orbit. Of course, launching rockets is hard and SpaceX’s first, less ambitious rocket also failed on its first three attempts. I’m sure other manufacturers have had their own share of problems. IMO people mostly think worse of spacex because it gets more publicity, but some degree of failure is always to be expected with new ventures in commercial rocketry.

[Purchased Bambu A1 mini] Low End FDM for Miniatures, Hobby Parts, and Messing Around?

Edit 2: I purchased the Bambu A1 mini. If I regret it, there will be more chances in later years. Haha. Maybe by then I can work with resin and make the really fun minis. Thank everyone who responded for your advice and help....

Do not get a base ender 3. Get something direct drive with input shaping and auto bed leveling if you can. If you want a printer that "just works" where (after some setup) you can just press a button and get a print, auto bed leveling is a must-have IMO. I don't have one myself, but I think the neptune 4 for ~$220 is a good option, anything else with similar specs would also work. Look at some reviews on youtube.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Ender 3 IMO is mostly obsolete now, nowadays you can easily get something for a similar price with better features across the board. Yes, an ender 3 will work, but why get one if you can get something better for the same price? (video on the topic)

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, it can be pretty impressively good. It 'just works' and can print at amazing speeds. Note the small bed size and lack of ability to tinker though.

it seems like the physical limits in the strength of cubes are probably becoming a problem lol

Those are some pretty beefy motors. Its interesting that they don't have a link to a product page for the motors on the video, as I assume that was the primary justification for the project.

I would argue that the internet is probably the least permanent form of media as anything can instantly disappear at any time. Its interesting to see people suddenly realize the impermanence of the internet and I think it highlights why projects like the internet archive are so important.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

If the internet isn't fun for you, find a community on the internet that you actually enjoy being in. Easier said than done, I know, but the internet is a big place.

I have heard a lot of people criticize specific aspects of the language that they deem to be bad design, especially the type system. Its probably mostly because its popular though.

Even with automating shitty jobs that no one wants, you're still getting people out of a job and the only way they have of making money. This is kind of how people reacted when Boston Dynamics showcased its warehouse robot. It seems that we need a universal basic income first, but no politicians are willing to do that at least until unpleasant jobs are automated. There's a bit of a chicken and egg problem there. And, on top of this, companies don't care that much about automating shitty jobs because the people in them get low wages, so they don't cost the company much to employ.

As someone who has tried out a lot of open source image AIs, I would say that 'original art' is something it can't do. It can make a lot of stuff, but if you deviate too far from the topics it knows it just stops giving you what you asked for. In addition to this, most of the originality the generations do have comes only from the prompt.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

It clearly does, and allowing this to be enforced clearly breaks precedent, but with how the Supreme Court is now who knows what will happen.

Shutter encoder, it has a ton of useful tools built in for quick video conversion, compression, trimming, etc, and it works very well for batch encoding of a lot of different video files

Affine, its a surprisingly feature rich notes app (open source but all cloud features are currently paid)

KopiaUI, an easy to use automatic backup program

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Currently any AI models that have the ability to make complex decisions are trained to recreate patterns from their training data. At its current state, you'd have to be pretty exceptionally stupid to make an AI that wants to kill you, and give it that ability at the same time. Of course - who knows what's going on at all of these private corporations and military contractors, but I think regular war, fascism, and nuclear weapons are by orders of magnitude the bigger threat.

Double-ended extension cords belongs in the top left right corner. Sounds bad and is bad.

Remember, you’re probably more technical than the average person. Double ended extension chords sound fine if you haven’t heard of them before until you think about it for five seconds.

Remind me how Mr. Joe is protecting trans people down in the southern states?

The president can say "Hey Congress, can you make this bill?" but Congress has no obligation to listen to him. Unless trans rights are being violated specifically by executive agencies, the president's influence is pretty limited.

It's different with Isreal, in that Biden has to approve foreign aid bills made by Congress, he himself expresses support for aid to Isreal, and he has the power to make treaties (as long as Congress approves them)

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Our government does not give him the power. I'm taking a class on the US government right now and this is literally just how it works. We give that power to congress and the states, and we can't really change that without a constitutional amendment. This is with regards to trans rights in the south, he does actually have some more power when it comes to Israel.

Hamas official says group would lay down its arms if an independent Palestinian state is established ( apnews.com )

A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

The IDF has killed 11 thousand men, 9 thousand women, and 14 thousand children, making 34 thousand total killed (an unknown number of which were civilians). Hamas has killed 0.6 thousand military personnel and 0.8 thousand civilians, making 1.4 thousand total killed (57% of which were civilians).

The number of children killed by Isreal (only children) is 17 times larger than the number of civilians killed by Hamas. Of course that doesn't make killing civilians OK, but I struggle to see an argument that Hamas is worse than the IDF. And if Hamas is the only method by which Palestine can defend itself, then there is a solid argument to be made for it being the lesser evil.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

If Palestine wasn't oppressed, no one would be joining Hamas and they would have no power. This is a problem Isreal created for themselves.

I recommend this video, it really shows how what Isreal calls peace is still so oppressive.

Time machines don't exist and (as far as we know) cannot exist. Therefore, we can say they work however we want. If you can travel back in time, surely you can do that while remaining close to an arbitrary point of reference.

Writing "Abolish PACs and lobbying" implies reverting Citizens United v FEC so you probably don't need a separate list item for it

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Citizen's United is what is preventing the government from abolishing lobbying, so abolishing lobbying implies reverting Citizen's United. You could either have one or the other on the list, but you don't really need both.

It had no payload on any of its flights. Rockets that have enough time/money put into development to have a reasonable expectation of working on the first try (and don’t have such an ambitious design) normally launch with a payload on their first flight. Sometimes, even those fail on the first few flights. Having the first few of a new rocket design fail before reliability is achieved is common (ex: Astra) and SpaceX’s other rocket, the Falcon 9, is known as the most reliable rocket, I even suspect it achieves landings more often lately than most others do launches.

Starship's last launch went decently well, reaching orbit (which is as far as most rockets go!) but failing during reentry. It is also supposed to be the rocket with the largest payload capacity to low earth orbit, with 100-150 tons when reused and likely 200-300 when expended.

The funny thing is that NASA contracts the same companies as the military anyways (in the modern day, at least)

NASA Prime Contractors Aerojet Rocketdyne, Boeing, Jacobs, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman currently have over 3,800 suppliers contributing to Orion, the SLS rocket, and the lunar spaceport at Kennedy.

It gets slightly less funny when you realize that that's the reason Nasa's latest rocket made primarily from Space Shuttle parts is way more expensive than basically any commercial rocket. Essentially Congress only agrees to fund NASA if it means they also get to fund these military contractors.

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I've realized that in conversations I'll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I've been thinking that it's not as inclusive to women/trans people....

Life expectancy is still basically the same.

No? life expecancy has gone from ~28 years to ~75 years

t’s not like people didn’t live well into their 90s even Before Common Era.
Yes, but this has gone from being the exception to being relatively frequent

The maximum life span a human can achieve has not changed, but life expectancy absolutely has. (last 2 paragraphs)

My mom's a mathematician, she got annoyed when I said that the order of operations is just arbitrary rules made up by people a couple thousand years ago

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

That proof for the order of operations sure seems to rely a lot on our current order of operations...

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

"Wrong answers" only according to our current order of operations, math still works if you, for example, make additions come first (as long as you're consistent about it).

OFC it is a convention and to change it you would have to change all expressions ever written all at the same time, to avoid confusion between competing standards. I'm not arguing that it should be changed, only that there is no 'high truth' behind it.
