I wouldn't be surprised if they're posted by Canadians.
I've seen confederate flags in Canada whose owner is still trying to claim that it's about heritage, and not the symbol of government founded on racism. That argument never holds water, but even less so when no one in your family has left the Canadian prairies in 100 years.
I've also run into Canadians who can explain the three branches of the American government, but doesn't know the difference between an MP, a PM, and an MLA.
You know, most of these ppl would not change their mind over a meme on the internet. Therefore, usually these memes are not to convince stubborn ppl but to show your allies they aren't alone.
Pretty sure they’re called “The Dixie Chicks” and not just “The Chicks”, though maybe that’s a fan name or something. Should still give the full name for those who maybe never heard of them.
There are a lot of people who are afraid to say they support Hamas, because they know that this is something to be ashamed of, and might be illegal in their area.
The only reason I argue on the internet (when I can be bothered) is so that people reading the thread will that an opposing opinion exists, not because I hope to convince the person I'm arguing with.
This Onion article seems to be really enjoyed by people that just don’t seem to have the balls to scream loudly „you totally deserved that terror attack Israel“ into the social media world.
Why would I have the balls to wish death on civilians? Seems like a super shitty thing to do. I don't want civilians to die on either side, so I guess that makes me the bad guy in your eyes.
yeah its been 'fun' talking about this on Lemmy and Reddit at the same time.
On reddit, I'm an anti-semite.
On lemmy, I'm a racist zionist.
In reality I understand the paradox of tolerance extends to fundamentalist abrahamic religions, which are all intolerant themselves, and therefore should not be tolerated.
I think it's actually you who are misinformed, to an extent, as you're painting with a brush so broad as to disregard the value and integrity of journalism entirely.
The news having changed is certainly true. For instance, the abolishment of the Fairness Doctrine in the US in 1987. It "required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters."
Furthermore, as "the fourth estate," at it's best journalism serves as a check on the power of the state and power - especially corporations. The muckrakers of the early 20th century, like Upton Sinclair, raised public awareness of corporate monopolies and unsafe worker conditions. Journalism was instrumental in fostering the knowledge and will necessary to claw workplace rights and protections from the rising capitalist class.
