"In the short term, living in a state of peak denial helps us cope. In the long run, it will be our undoing.

Truth tellers are the Achilles heel of collective denial.

And so those who wear masks are ridiculed, scientists reporting on COVID-19 risks are cast as fearmongers, and those with long COVID are dismissed as having anxiety disorders."

Fantastic piece on the tactics behind science denial, most notably on COVID, by sociologists in @scientificamerican_rss_bot

The strange thing about living in Australia is you're used to terrible, nocturnal screeching things, many of which fly. You're used to spiders as big as your hand, or ignoring one of the 10 most deadly snakes turning up while you're walking around the block. You're used to, on a hike, running into furry things as tall as you hopping around the place while carrying their young in flesh pouches.

But raccoons? That’s so weird. They're real things? For serious? That rummage through your garbage?

thegarbagebird ,
@thegarbagebird@theblower.au avatar

@vampiress right!? we are perfectly comfortable with spiders that have hairier legs than a jack russell terrier and live in your shoe, but those things have creepy little hands

Columbia’s “Task Force on Anti-Semitism” has announced a goal of making “ambitious changes” to the university. Faculty and students critical of Israel and Zionism appear to be the first target.

@TruthSandwich is happy to equate the quassam brigades with all of hamas, so it is ideologically contiguous for them to write off all jews, both practicing and non, as anti-semitic simply for not being a member of this specific sect.

this is also contiguous with the proud display of the american flag, and the misuse use of the word ‘truth’ in the display name.

i was happier when you had me blocked, ol hoss, but that's on me. new account, sorry about it.
congratulations on your new shibboleth, brave culture warrior

hmmmm I'm not sure which bit @TruthSandwich found racist. i assume it was the unpleasant reminder that non-zionist jews exist, which is clearly racist towards israel. or perhaps it was the mention of hamas, which is also racist towards israel.

ah, no it was the anti american sentiment. that is a twofer, which is racist towards both america and israel

@DropBear yeah, @TruthSandwich blocked me on my old, now defunct instance. i straight up forgot about the strange little guy. i didn't care enough to block them in return at the time, and i honestly don't care enough to do it now. they've made themselves happy with their righteously indignant block, no further action required on my part.

as for starting your own instance, heck, you can run a fediverse compatible server on a mobile phone if you've got the mind to.
i just think there they're an obviously unserious person with too much time and disposable income.
i used to think they were doing an elaborate caricature of Liberalism, but it turns out it's pretty representative, if a little more strident and histrionic.
all the animus is on their end, they're the one cooking their brain on the internet. i’m just going to forget about this weirdo again until they show up in a screengrab, being mocked for saying something foot-eatingly incorrect

there is one thing i will say about trump, he is cheap. i reckon he would cut spending to israel. it’d be easy. half the work has been done for him, given that the military support has been marketed as ‘aid.’

tesla owners finally complaining about some of the cars' features bc apparently your spouse can watch your car's progress on the app at home and see where you stop. you can even see which seats are being used so "both backseats" suddenly registering on the "heat map" is giving away the cheating lol

"The James Comers, Chuck Grassleys, Jim Jordans of the world have been trafficking in this stuff as the purported basis for a Biden impeachment, which is itself tightly yoked to Trump’s campaign for re-election. Right-wing outlets, most notably Fox News, have been amplifying the claims not dozens or hundreds but thousands of times over the past several months."

@wdlindsy i dunno, given that america, and a decent portion of nato, is ideologically incapable of letting go of the cold war, i can't help but feel that putin merely aimed at the barrel that all the fish swam willingly into.

The English suffix "-ard" (as in "drunkard", "laggard", "braggard", and "sluggard") is used to make adjectives into deprecating nouns.

"He's drunk" is just a description.
"He's a drunkard" is a moral judgment that finds the subject lacking.

The same process turned "he's wise" into "he's a wizard".

"Wizard" was the medieval equivalent of "smartass".
