The same people that criticize the spending habits of people in poverty, are the same people that don't want to tax the rich.

@selzero “can you believe poor people waste money on mobile phones,” say the people who have designed a system by which nothing can be navigated by internet access

@thegarbagebird @selzero without* internet access is what I hope you meant. Because that's the truth.😬

Having helped people navigate some of those systems I'm sad to say that both positions are true.

BeAware ,
@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

@Stevenheywood @thegarbagebird @selzero true. Some systems simply refuse to move online.

Accessibility is a real worldwide issue all around.

@BeAware @thegarbagebird @selzero
And some systems appear to be deliberately designed to be off-putting, or are so badly designed as to be barely accessible.

@Stevenheywood this is something I can relate to somewhat.

"Oh, you suspect you might have ADHD? Fill out this 5 page form and we can find out"

Then when the form comes back only partially complete, they wonder why...🤦‍♂️

@BeAware @Stevenheywood i say it so often that it's practically a catchphrase; ‘the cruelty is the point.’

@BeAware
kinda OT, but I think the biggest problem with getting an ADHD diagnosis (at least in Germany) is not filling out forms, but getting an appointment for it in the first place.. after finding places that do diagnosis you usually need to periodically phone them to ask if they can give you an appointment now, because they tend to be booked out for >3-6 months in advance, but don't give appointments for later dates either..

@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

@Doomed_Daniel this is a widespread issue that's not centralized around one singular issue.

I think the problems getting diagnosed in a lot of countries are persistent, but different in ways.

@BeAware
I mean, I also had to fill out lots of questionnaires for the diagnosis, and it actually took me so long I had to come back the next day to finish them - but I didn't mind that much because at least I finally got diagnosed, and I hate filling out forms a lot less than phoning or generally having to chase after doctors offices or whatever to hopefully eventually get what I need..

BeAware ,

@Doomed_Daniel for sure. I totally understand that, I'm just saying that in other countries, they have different issues that could effect diagnosis as well.

The form example, in my case, was told to be finished on the spot in-office. That was big pressure for me and ended up with the form not being filled out fully as to save time. Thankfully the doctor understood my issues and talked me through the rest of the missing info, though I feel I got lucky in that case. Others might not be so lucky.

@BeAware
being told to be finished on the spot sucks :-/

In my case their assumption was that I'd be finished after 2 hours or whatever, but they didn't really mind that I took longer, except that they wanted to go home eventually, which is why I was asked to come back the next day =)
I guess taking longer is a not uncommon symptom though, so no one should be surprised..

@BeAware @selzero i did. i re-read it and said ‘fuck,’ out loud, but i had just signed on so i had no time to fix it. i am going to break my own rule and use the edit feature.
