Isn't that very similar to what TikTok does? Just with a different algorithm and maybe other content than just videos?

rufus , (edited )

Hmm. Maybe send the mod in question a DM?

And are you permabanned? Or just for a few hours? If it's just that, take the timeout.

rufus ,

Your ban in "Lefty Memes" and "Political Memes" seem to be permanent... Your ban from "World News" already expired.

rufus , (edited )

Not sure if this counts as "little" because it has to go into the oven for 45mins... But it's assembled in under 5 minutes and you can get rid of your old bananas that already turned brown:

Banana bread

4 Bananas, 80ml (vegetable) oil, 80g sugar, 250g flour, 2tsp baking powder, 1tsp vanilla sugar, some chocolate (drops).

Smash the bananas, mix in all the other ingredients to a smooth dough. Find some chocolate from christmas that's still laying around in the house, crush it and mix it in.

Bake it at 170°C. Takes 40-50min in a loaf pan. Don't forget to grase the pan before or use baking parchment.

Doesn't need any fancy ingredients like milk or eggs. And you can pretty much wing it. You can also experiment, put some cinnamon or oat flakes in... And don't bake it too well, I think it's best when it's still a bit gooey and moist inside.

I'm confused. Lately people here have been telling me Google had become unusable and they nowadays use ChatGPT to get their information...

Now Google brings AI to search and that's wrong, too?

rufus , (edited )

Reassuring to hear I'm not the only one with that perspective. (I mean I touched ChatGPT... But I wouldn't use it for factual stuff or to filter information and feed it to me.)

rufus ,

Heheh. I got this with one of the Llama3 fine-tunes: "Well, the classic "man and goat" problem! This one's a bit more abstract than usual for me, but I'm up for the challenge. Let me think... We have a man and a goat on one side of the river. They need to get to the other side but only have a single-person boat. The twist here is that if the goat is left unattended, it will eat the boat. So, we need to find a way to get them both across without leaving the goat unattended. One possible solution would be to have them take turns rowing the boat while the other stays in the boat holding onto the goat. [...]" followed by more nonsense. Seems to be a good question.

On the fifth try it almost gets it: "Ah, I've got it! The man will first row the goat across. Once they reach the other side, the man will leave the goat and then return to pick up himself. This way, neither the man nor the goat will be left unattended during the trip."

rufus ,

Hmmh. Would be interesting to find out if it has a concept of 'rounded' or 'professional' fonts, or if it just guessed random font names until you happened to like one if them. That isn't always obvious and we have a tendency to see what we like/expect to see in such scenarios.

Yeah, I have that conversation regularly here on Lemmy. People use ChatGPT for all kinds of stuff. I'm more into the downloadable models like Meta's Llama model. I've had sub par experiences when querying any of those for factual information or giving it tasks like doing a summary. I also just use it for stuff like your example. And for creative or recreational purposes. It can also help with creativity, come up with ideas or rephrase things. And translation works well. At least that's been my experience.

rufus ,

What I the to be alive.

It's "What a time to be alive..." And you need to link the Two Minute Papers video when saying that 😆

rufus , (edited )

Hmmh. We've seen all kinds of claims and hype regarding AI. I'd like to see and judge for myself. Guess I'll have to wait a few days.

Edit 2024-05-18: And yesterday it showed up in the webinterface. How do I get the talking and the emotions? Is that not available yet? Or do I need a phone app for that?

rufus ,

Hmm. You kinda get the crown handed to you for doing it. But I get what you're saying.

rufus ,

Fair enough. Yes, I'd say this is the whole picture.

rufus , (edited )

Earth is merely spinning at 15 degrees per hour.

rufus ,

Everytime I look to my left and right and the people surrounding me, I come to the conclusion that most people are nice and good. It doesn't look that way if I'm reading the news, however. I think most people are in fact good and the media coverage is skewed. But we definitely need to defend our world from the assholes. It's a constant struggle to prevail.

Struggling to tolerate wife's haircut

I typically don't care about things like hairstyle, makeup or clothes. But my wife has started giving herself a buzz cut and I simply hate it. I told her and she grew it out for a while, but she said longer hair was making her depressed and it needed to be a buzz cut. She said it just looks like her when she sees it. Part of me...

rufus , (edited )

I'd say drop it and accept your wife how she likes to be. It's not "nothing" but it's just outer appearance and ultimately she has to walk around with her body and be comfortable with her looks.

You two should talk. Respect each other and find something that works for the both of you. Focus on how you and her feel and what your wants and needs are. In doubt she gets to decide on her own haircut. But try to find out why it's bothering you and her so much.

Edit: And I'd agree on the couples therapy someone mentioned. This isn't a healthy situation to be in. You probably need to put in some effort if you want to keep her. Learn how to accept each other and grow past this. I'm not saying you're at fault or the one needing to change. But the underlying issue could drive you apart if it keeps growing.

What service should i use for AI backend that isn't openai

I have written myself a web fronetend using langchain that uses a json based agent to do advanced tool use (websearch, calculations, document summarisation/information extraction, etc) and chain of thought reasoning. At the moment im using openai gpt-4-turbo for the main agent and gpt-3.5-turbo for some of the summation tools...

rufus , (edited )

I'm not sure where in the documentation they list available backends... But you can see it in the source here: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/tree/master/libs/langchain/langchain/llms
(for the Python version)

You could use something like a Huggingface endpoint, or OpenRouter if you want flexibility but something easy to use. There are services like RunPod or vast.ai which let you rent cloud GPUs by the minute and run whatever you like. These would be some of the popular services.

Edit: Here's the documentation page for the JS version: https://js.langchain.com/docs/integrations/llms/

A false police report is when you lie to the police. And give them false information.

So if someone is missing, go to the police and tell them they're missing. That's the truth. If they ask questions, answer truthfully and it'll be alright. That's what the police is for and their job.

Also: Since you're having trouble... Go to the police station in person. Somebody will be there, talk to you and explain things to you. Like what's false and what's a good report.

And then if you get new information that might be related to the case: Immediately forward that to the police! You're not an detective and neither are we. If you got that call... Tell the police. It's not a lie that you got a call. Let the proper investigator figure it out. It probably takes them 5 minutes to trace the number and figure it out. And you shouldn't overthink it or try to conclude things. Just tell them what you heard and that you don't know if it's connected or coincidence. That's the truth and it the job of the police to find out what's happening. Not your job.

And you're delaying everything by not doing it properly. Go to the police station in person. Tell them everything. Be honest and tell the truth. Let them do their job.

And don't have back and forth via email and debates on Lemmy... Go to the station and talk to one of the officers. Ask them the same questions you're asking here. Should I file a report... What if he's hiding from me... What about that phone call... Ask an officer about that. They're the police and they have the correct answers to all of your questions. They can give advise before filing a report or adding something. They have additional tools available. And they've seen situations like yours before. They probably have a standard procedure in place if somebody hides from their partner. They could tell you about it if you went there and asked them.

German, English, a tiny bit of French since I had that in school but forgot most of it. And a bunch of computer programming languages.

rufus ,

Maybe steal a commercial airplane and go on a joyride. Do a barrel roll like the one guy did in 2018. Then empty my bank account or somehow aquire some money to get a few escorts and hookers and whoever wants to join, have a nice dinner and spend the night together. I suppose a nice swinger club with a good buffet will also do.

rufus ,

That is kind of the problem. Everyone else is getting scammed, their data stolen and tried to be manipulated by targeted advertising, algorithms and addictive, yet unhealthy social media platforms.

I wish it were more than the nerds who cared...

Should I avoid or engage in current news right now?

During the last 'election summer' things went haywire but ultimately nothing meaningful really happened, and not a whole lot really changed as a result of that unrest. This time things are going haywire again, and it seems like something big will happen but people thought that the last time... Would it just be better to ignore...

rufus , (edited )

Uh. I'm always depressed after reading the news. And loose faith in humanity. I'm far better off meeting neighbors and realizing there are actually lots of nice people around. Or partying with family. Or reading a good book or working on my projects. Sometimes I get (politically) active in my neighbourhood.

I also have the urge to follow the news and politics. But in the end I don't get anything out of it. And it doesn't provide me with anything lasting for me. So I try to balance that... And national politics isn't all there is. If you don't like that show (and I think it's more a show than anything else), you could also learn about European politics, or what's going on in Korea (for example). I think that's going to provide you with a broader perspective on the world, than just watching something that's supposed to be a show to stir up emotions.

rufus ,

I just watch subscribed communities. To me that's just too much noise. So I haven't blocked any.

rufus ,

Idk. There have been some sites recommending the alternative to a subreddit. I scrolled through that. And put keywords for my interests into the search bar. Occasionally I spend some minutes scrolling through the 'All' feed and subscribing. Or when somebody links a crosspost. Over time I've also unsubscribed from lemmy.ml communities because I don't agree with their moderation practices. Found alternatives to that. And I've unsubscribed from most of the news communities, because reading about world politics is weighing me down and this place (Lemmy) is a lot about discussing the news.

I'm subscribed to roughly 100 communities now. Some of them are duplicates or a wasteland, that's just how it is. But I like that this way, my feed is somehow tailored to my interests. And there is no doom-scrolling any more, which I like too.

rufus ,

What's with the Republicans, don't they like their country and democracy any more?

rufus , (edited )

Wow. Thanks. With your summary and the titles alone I can make sense of that manifesto:

  1. Define families properly to include all colours of families. Make them (the people) more important than corporate greed and capitalism. Make sure their children have access to education. And care for them if their parents aren't well off.

  2. The state has no business dictating people's reproductive rights, choices in gender issues and religion. Instead they need the state to provide infrastructure to them, healthcare etc to enable them to achieve what they want individually. People need the freedom not to get shot on the streets or at school by some lunatic. And democracy in the USA is broken. Governance by the people needs true choices. Less lobbyism, gerrymandering and childish behaviour in the senate.

  3. Make good choices in a globalized world. Sustainable politics. Trade and be friends with your neighbours and other friendly nations. If you want to be strong, you better have friends and also show them they're worth something to you.

  4. Freedom and Liberty? That's a pretty straightforward proclamation to celebrate LGBTQ+ people, women etc as god made them. I'd say that extends to anyone and all the diversity and richness of life. And include welfare programs for the disadvantaged, as God and the founding fathers wanted equal opportunity. And the USA currently only cares for the rich. Contradicting any of Jesus' teachings.

rufus ,

Sry, I think the innuendo got lost here. I was more holding up a mirror to their double-speak and trying to point out that if you really liked those goals, you'd take a different route. The conclusions these people jumped to, contradict each other and what they're supposedly achieving.

I think if they were for families and liberty, they'd do roughly what I said... Making me think that's not what it's about. For me they don't need to come up with wrong reasons to justify it. They could just say 'we hate people and freedom' and at least that'd be honest and free of contradictions.

rufus ,

Oh, the comment below/above was supposed to be here.

rufus ,

Aren't HTML and XML markup languages and not turing complete? So they don't qualify as programming languages, because you can't program in them?

rufus ,

Roughly C, C++, Python, Java... But not all of them on an expert level.

rufus ,

Hmmh. Good reminder not to rely on these cloud services too much. And I mean the terms and services are kinda vague and enforced by a (rogue) AI. She could have stored murder mystery stories to the same effect.

rufus , (edited )

They're fairly known to do this. For YouTube creators it's been this way for years. With nobody at the other side, just AI. Every now and then some YouTuber makes a video how they were able to restore their account against all odds.

I mean with that it's bad because peoples livelihood is on the line. But also getting a regular Google account can have serious consequences. People use it to login to other services, have half their lives stored there and their phones connected.

And I think there is a general push towards AI powered customer support. I'm afraid in 10 years it'll be very hard to reach anyone that can help you if it's not the standard procedure. And it'll be more a sci-fi dystopia. With most companies and contracts.

rufus ,

Hmmh. That is about a different author who said that on Instagram. And reading that Instagram post (which I haven't done before) ... There seems to be more to it. Sharing documents with explicit content with multiple people seems to be the issue. And that'd align with my experience. I've worked on 'normal' Google cloud documents with ~30 to 50 people and nothing ever happened. That could be coincidence but I suppose lots of people do that. Maybe it's really the combination of the two factors.

18+ I Ask thee a question and hope for peace

I am a nobody who was stolen from there parents. I've spent my life in constant pain and have always been abused. In many ways I Have struggled to stay strong in life and have grown so wise in doing so. Being raised in a place of faith, and under the age of 7 as a young child I questioned such intentions upon me and already...

You should call the crisis line line of your country and get someone to listen to you. Not just the civil services but someone who might actually care. Seems you arrived at the bottom. But you're not alone or the only one who's in a really bad place.

rufus ,

The answer is spread amonst the comments you've already got.

It's a combination of regular bans, IP bans, moderators knowing the 'regulars' and recognizing their (bad) behaviour. And the Lemmy admins have a Matrix chat(?) room where they exchange info.

rufus ,

Completely agree. First of all the voting behaviour. To me it looks completely like a score if a specific opinion is popular. I see lots of valid arguments (in friendly words) against a popular opinion getting downvoted. Urban legends getting upvoted while the correct answer has 2 upvotes... Things that are the first thing that comes to mind after reading the headline, but not part of the article at all getting a good amount of upvotes...

And with the sarcasm, innuendo, emotions, playing devils advocate... It's a long tradition on the internet to add hints to the text to make that clear. It's not mandatory in any way, but the subtext, verbal clues and facial expressions are definitely missing. Reddit folks have their own jargon with the '/s' etc. Other people use emojis. But even before emojis were a thing, people added ;-) :'-) or XD or other clues.

Sarcasm just doesn't work that well in text comments and it never has.

rufus ,

Hand them some tea-tree oil and the instructions how to use it and tell them to wash their feet for a week with that.

rufus ,

discuss.tchncs.de

wäre eine Möglichkeit. Die ganzen tchncs.de Dienste sind üblicherweise sehr gut gewartet und Milan (der Admin) macht das was er macht üblicherweise sehr gut.

rufus ,

Good question. I like Lemmy because there is no doom-scrolling. Of course it's a bit more complicated if you want some distraction available whenever you want. In the old times people read magazines or newspapers. Maybe an RSS feed reader with some blogs, but that won't be interactive. You can also use Mastodon or other social media. Mastodon is a bit more populated than Lemmy. I also like podcasts and there is a plethora of good podcasts around... But that's not "micro".

rufus ,

I think echo chambers is what the current form of the internet has provided us with. Especially the recommendation algorithms that make it so convenient. And it's a downwards-spiral in itself.

Also politics in the USA seems to have that baked in. Two parties, strong opinions about everything and you need to take sides. Everything needs to be simple truths and about people, less about complicated topics and diversified perspectives. You're either supporting something or the enemy.

Also in the present time some people struggle with the choices available to them. Some want guidance, simple truths and something to identify themselves with. It's a part of being human to look for a way to define your own identity. And to want a group to belong to.

So we end up in a situation where everything is pushing towards it. People longing for recognition and validation, tribalism being part of our psychology. Companies pushing for it with their platforms and algorithms. And politicians recognizing and exploiting it to their advantage.

And I rarely see politicians talk about tackling actual issues... Saying it'll take some effort but we need to address xyz, it's the way forward. They rather make it emotional, make a show out of it. Other things would be widely unpopular in the US.

rufus , (edited )

Hmm, maybe with the next M4 Mac Studio. The current one maxes out at 192GB of memory. Which isn't enough for an decent quantized version of a 400B model. So either like 380GB of (unified) RAM or 8 NVidia A6000.

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

rufus ,

Sure. To prepare someone to become a responsible adult, they need information. Learn things good and bad. Understand especially WHY people do things and consequences of actions.

I mean if you exclude half the truth, your kids will not learn how to judge things and make decisions.

And things not being etically 100% correct is not a reason to hide them altogether. I mean my mom also reads murder mystery stories and murder is not okay... I think beginning with a certain age it is important to learn also about ambiguous stuff. It's part of life.

That doesn't mean I'd have to teach them myself. But I'd talk to them and make sure they learned the right things.

rufus , (edited )

I read a few and saw a few movies that tell me otherwise... Discussing an hypothetical "perfect murder"... Detailing how they were murdered with a frozen icicle so there won't be any weapon or fingerprints left...

I mean those examples are a bit exaggerated. But there are pretty realistic stories. And I'd say the lines between story and guide aren't always that clear. That's part of the thrill. The good ones are kinda detailed enough to be both.

Same goes for historical records.

And I think if you grow up completely sheltered from evil and true life, you're bound to miss out, not to know aboud bad things. You won't have any understanding or defense against it and will get exploited. And you're missing half of the fun and intelligence that would otherwise be your potential. Also you can't keep kids from having to make their own decisions forever. At some point they need the tools and knowledge to decide for themselves.

I can recommend the sci-fi dystopia "The Giver" about that. (The sheltering part, not the murder mysteries.) But read the book, the movie isn't good at all. And read it while you're young, it's probably more suited for adolescents than for adults.

rufus ,

Hmm. Sure the legal issues is why it is the way it is. It doesn't necessarily mean it should be that way... But it's more complicated than that.

With the dataset, I'm sure people could figure out something to do with it. There are community curated datasets, previous attempts to recreate models like RedPajama... Sure this is a lot more, but other people are making progress, too. And if not that we could at least have a look at it, do some research, statistics... Maybe use parts of it for something else. That's the spirit of the free software movement.

I'm a bit split on the topic. FOSS doesn't translate directly to ML models. Not being able to recreate something isn't how it's supposed to be. But it's not software either and works differently. Releasing datasets would give us some progress and give the tools to other people than just the big tech companies who are free to violate copyright law. But we're still missing the millions to afford the compute to train a model anyways.
