What is the occasion? Most successful fraudster in US history?

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I had somewhat hoped that my fellow countrymen in Germany would not fall for the obtuse populism of the right, but that is exactly what has happened.

I'm afraid there's nothing left to counter this, because voters obviously no longer care about rational arguments and don't even want to acknowledge the real problems of our time. They make it easy for themselves and just blame everything on illegal migration or whatever - just as the right-wingers tell them to do.

In this reality characterized by stupidity and false attributions of blame, it is hardly surprising that important but somewhat abstract topics such as data protection are no longer of interest to the masses. It's enough to make you cry.

The saddest thing about this is that the Europeans and especially the Germans should really know better. But no, all the lessons from our dark history seem to have been forgotten - or they are simply ignored so that one can once again live in the comfortable world of simple explanations where there is always some minority to blame.

I'm pretty sure he knew exactly what he was doing. He's a unscrupulous grifter that was in it for the money from day one. Low IQ is no excuse for being a scumbag.

Aww, that made my day :)

Indeed, thank you for your service - and for saving this cuteness overload for the weekend. So adorable.

Thanks a million for all your efforts. It's because of people like you that we have cool content here at all.

Unfortunately, I'm still not as active as I probably should be. I'll try to do better.

Either the judiciary in my home country has watched 12 Monkeys too often, or it is not as independent of the industry as it pretends to be. Either way, this is completely absurd and a declaration of the bankruptcy of our legal system.

LLM queries for personal pdf libraries?

So perplexity can kind of weakly analyze the first few pages of small file size pdfs one at a time, but I'd love to have something that would allow me to upload several hundred research papers and textbooks that could then be analyzed for consensus and contradictions and give me more meaningful search results and summaries than...

Afforai might be able to do stuff like this. I haven't tested it myself yet, but the service also seems to have some other features that might be relevant for your use case.

The saddest part is that it will probably take a conviction in this trial for many US citizens to realize that Trump is not a viable presidential candidate. The state of American society is frightening.

DandomRude , (edited )
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

Tbh I don't even think that Trump will get convicted. The fact that he's still somehow at large makes me think that he and his henchmen built their own "Deep State" by now.

DandomRude OP ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I didn't meant the speech, but how you see your current situation as citizens of the USA.

DandomRude , (edited )
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

The fact that your supreme court is even willing to deal with the question of whether a president should have absolute immunity pretty much says it all.

@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I'm from Germany, but I see myself more as a European, because I don't think much of national concepts, if only because of our past. Having said that, against the background of the past decades, it seems almost desirable to me that the situation in America now makes it obvious to everyone that the US system does not serve the American people. You have long been a role model for us: a successful democracy that promises its citizens prosperity and freedom. Many of my fellow citizens are only now realizing that this has never been the case, as the massive flaws in your system make it obvious that this is not a system for the people, but a system for the powerful. I sincerely hope that this realization can somewhat help humanity overcome greed and hubris to find a better way. But I have little hope, if only because even here in Germany I can see that fascism is on the rise again - although the Germans should know better; unfortunately, not even my people seem to have learned anything from our terrible past. It's enough to make you cry. So long story short: I can understand your frustration very well.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I don't understand what there is to discuss here at all. If the US president had immunity as a matter of principle, he wouldn't be a president, he'd be some kind of god-king (even kings couldn't do whatever they wanted).

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

Well, I'm not very familiar with the US Constitution. But if there really is any leeway for such advances, it doesn't seem to me to be a good constitution for a democratic country.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I think this example illustrates very well how detached from reality the stock market is: Truth Social is not an important social media platform and will probably never make a profit. Nevertheless, one can make an absurd amount of money with such a bogus company - but unfortunately only if one has the right friends and belongs to their circles.

In this sense, one almost has to be grateful to Trump because he makes the functional logic of this rotten system so obvious.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

So can the rest of the GOP also hold Trump financially responsible for the damage he has done to that party's (arguably already rather dubious) reputation?

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately, I don't have space for a bridge at the moment, but I would be interested in some snake oil.

That is of course absolutely true. But fossil fuels are still a tool of power that is used for political purposes. Of course, this also applies to the metals needed for batteries, for example. However, access to this is not so promising in terms of power, because on the one hand, as you say, you can also live and produce "according to the times of day". On the other hand, there are untapped reserves of these raw materials - such as cobalt and manganese - in the deep sea, i.e. international waters. In short, I do think that some players have an interest in boycotting solar energy and other renewable energy sources in favor of fossil fuels in order to maintain their power base - Russia, for example.

If the Lemmy admins can't make a living from it, that's the Lemmy community's fault.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

This doesn't seem like an open question to me.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

It's prolly best to not repost any AI images to any communities that are not specifically about that. At least that's my understanding - that's why I don't post this stuff anywhere else. I just try to contribute something to Lemmy besides screenshots of other social media sites or old memes that I saved from reddit or elsewhere. I don't have too much to offer but some cleaned up AI Images tho. This doesn't seem to meet the standard for non-AI-communities. So I don't even bother anymore. Where should the content be coming from, you might ask. Well, I dunno. I guess that all the downvoting people surely must know the answer to that.

Appeals Court Bails Trump Out of Having to Post Massive Fraud Bond ( www.rollingstone.com )

Donald Trump was supposed to have to post a $464 million bond by Monday or else the state of New York could begin collecting on the massive civil fraud judgment leveled against him earlier this year. An appeals court bailed him out, blocking collection of the judgment and giving the former president 10 days to post a...

What appeals court? I thought Trump had to post $464 million in order to even appeal. How did he manage that?

Musk has already turned Twitter into Truth Social anyway. So no need.

@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

I don't think there's much need to discuss the substance of this response, as it's hardly anything but finger-pointing and fear-mongering. But I do find one thing quite telling: the fact that the GOP even made one of the few women in that party give her SOTU response from a kitchen.

DandomRude ,
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

Be that as it may. I simply think it is a mockery to provide a little humanitarian aid while at the same time supplying weapons to Israel and continually vetoing a UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire. This makes the US complicit in the genocide of the Palestinians imo. Pretending that this is not the case by delivering a few relief supplies to the dying people is nothing more than hypocrisy. I find that disgusting.
