I don't understand CWing political posts. And that doesn't mean you need to @ me explaining why. I know THEIR reasons, I just disagree with them and won't do it.

I respect CWs for other things, but not politics. Politics is news and people need to be aware of what's happening. It's not gory or violent, it's politics.

@GottaLaff I can't predict whether a vaccine (of any sort) will be no big deal or a day or two of feeling crummy, so I always plan for the latter. It is, of course, better than the week or more of feeling much crummier that the vaccine helps ward off.

@GottaLaff As someone who did it all more than 30 years ago, I don't really have questions; I'm just interested and a little amazed at how much worse it has got in that time. My process wasn't the instant landing people allegedly got in the 1970s, and was not easy by any means, but it was far simpler and saner than what you seem to have been subjected to. No fancy English exam for a start. Different and (perhaps by accident) easier security check. Details only if you want.

@GottaLaff Great posts. Apologies for the redundant info I replied with earlier; you're clearly really on top of it.
Sounds like the process has got messier since I did it almost 35 years ago, which I guess isn't shocking. In particular no formal language test issued. May have made a difference that I applied for permanent residence while already working in Canada on a renewable Free Trade work permit, and my employer supported the PR paperwork.

@GottaLaff Kudos to you for persisting through the process!

Do please apply for citizenship in a few years when you qualify; we need you to help keep the Junior GOP (Conservatives) back! As you probably know but other readers might not, there's no problem keeping your US citizenship (i.e. becoming a dual); US laws that made that hard were struck down many decades ago.

And it's amusing to be a citizenship of two countries and always feel embarrassed about at least one of them.

@GottaLaff @clane22 I trust you've looked up the tax/fiscal reporting obligations the IRS will impose even when your tax home is permanently abroad. And, on a cheerier note, that you are guaranteed the right to vote for US federal offices in the last US place you lived. (None of that a big deal in practice, just something some people miss, so offering a heads-up.)

@philip_cardella @jik Amtrak wasn't a seizure. Railroads already had statutory obligations to run passenger service. Amtrak gave them a way to escape that. No railroad was forced to do so, and in fact two of them (Southern and D&RGW) held out for years.
