"Germany is an easy country to be in. The people are friendly. The bars and bakeries are lovely. The cities are a potent mix of cultures: Cologne baklava, the kebabs of Essen, the mind-bending schnitzel-overload of the Munich cafe scene, schnitzels the size of stingrays, schnitzels that will haunt you.

    As the right (well the Conservatives actually) stare disaster in the face, commentators on the Right have started to wonder about the appeal of proportional representation (PR) as opposed to First Past the Post (FPTP).

    Odd that, isn't it? people are always satisfied with FPTP right up to the time it doesn't get them into government.

    I've always thought PR was a good idea, so the Right's 'conversion' should be seen as a good thing... but after a landslide Labour's support may wane!

    martinvermeer ,
    @martinvermeer@fediscience.org avatar

    @ChrisMayLA6 PR is simply more democratic... it gives you more than just a single bit (binary digit) of choice. Also, it allows replacement of parties that have gone off the rails.

    An advantage of FPTP is that everyone has their personal MP that they can write or call to. A compromise is ranked-choice voting which may be an easier sell. It also gives small parties a chance.

    / Figures on arms deals with Israel

    The data shows that the UK government continued authorizing the export of military and non-military goods to Israel during this period, despite the ongoing conflict and human rights violations against Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied territories.

    While the document does not provide specifics on the types of military equipment licensed, it notes examples like components for military aircraft, vehicles, naval vessels, helicopters, ammunition, and body armor.

    Campaign groups argue this makes the UK complicit in enabling Israeli actions that may constitute war crimes and violations of international law. However, the UK insists its export decisions are consistent with legal advice.

    I gave up chemistry at school as early as possible, so I’m very much the wrong person to attempt to ponder these questions but…

    If we think we’d like some of the products of the crude oil distillation column – e.g. naphtha for medical plastics or bitumen for roads –

    and we need as much arable land as possible for, you know, food,

    but we don’t want to extract crude oil anymore,

    then how tf (scientific term) do we resolve this?

    And to what extent are we even trying?

    martinvermeer ,
    @martinvermeer@fediscience.org avatar

    @urlyman @uva It is, but we should also be careful not to (unintentionally) feeding feelings of hopelessness. If we'd just got mostly rid of fossil fuel for burning (transport, heating), that would already be a big thing, and buy us time for doing all those other, also necessary things. Just like it is not necessary to solve the grid storage problem at the same time as building out renewables... staging is a thing.

    martinvermeer ,
    @martinvermeer@fediscience.org avatar

    @CelloMomOnCars @urlyman @uva This is true, but several of your examples won in the market due to being more convenient. Like, asphalt can be laid by machine, is easier to stripe, and quieter to drive on.
    There is no going back. We need new products that are not only environment/climate safe, but at least as convenient as what we have. Anything less just won't fly, politically or market wise. EVs (and yes, electric bikes), heat pumps, LED lights... they are examples of this.

    / Former Meta engineer sues company saying he was fired over handling of Gaza content

    The lawsuit alleges that Meta's content moderation policies and practices are inadequate, leading to the spread of misinformation and hate speech on its platforms.

    […] Hamad said his firing appeared to stem from an incident in December involving an emergency procedure designed to troubleshoot severe problems with the company's platforms, known within Meta as a SEV or "site event".

    […] He had noted procedural irregularities in the handling of an SEV related to restrictions on content posted by Palestinian Instagram personalities that prevented the posts from appearing in searches and feeds, the complaint said.

    […] In one case, the complaint alleged, he found that a short video posted by Palestinian photojournalist Motaz Azaiza had been misclassified as pornographic even though it showed a destroyed building in Gaza.

    […] Hamad said Meta told him he was fired for violating a policy barring employees from working on issues with accounts of people they know personally, referring to Azaiza, the photojouralist. Hamad said he had no personal connection to Azaiza.

    Trump's actions, such as accentuating Jon Stewart's Jewish last name "Leibowitz" (2013), making comments seemingly trafficking in Jewish stereotypes when addressing the Republican Jewish Coalition in 2015, his initial refusal to disavow support from former KKK leader David Duke during the 2016 campaign, his campaign's delayed condemnation of the extreme antisemitic harassment directed at Jewish journalists like Julia Ioffe after they wrote critical profiles of Trump/his wife, the use of his "America First" slogan echoing the antisemitic isolationist group from the WWII era, and listing a white supremacist leader as a delegate before removing him after media scrutiny – none of that seems to be a problem. Apparently, what makes one an antisemite in their eyes is wanting an end to 76 years of Israeli occupation and a brutal apartheid.

    #ICC / Israeli Mossad chief ‘threatened’ ICC prosecutor over war crimes inquiry | Israel

    […] "You don't want to be getting into things that could compromise your security or that of your family."

    The allegations detailed in the Guardian paint a troubling picture of alleged intimidation tactics and excessive pressure applied by Israeli intelligence against an ICC prosecutor.

    Cohen's covert contacts with Bensouda took place over several years leading up to her 2021 decision to open a formal #ICC investigation into alleged Israeli war crimes.

    A close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Cohen personally led the #Mossad's efforts as part of a decade-long campaign by Israel to undermine the ICC probe.

    The efforts escalated in 2019-2020 with Cohen allegedly showing Bensouda photos of her husband taken covertly and suggesting the ICC probe would hurt her career.

    […] Another Israeli source briefed on the operation against Bensouda said the Mossad’s objective was to compromise the prosecutor or enlist her as someone who would cooperate with Israel’s demands.

    @palestine

    "Hamas demands the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest and detention orders against all war criminals, including occupation leaders, officers and soldiers who participated in crimes against the Palestinian people. It also demands the cancellation of all arrest warrants issued against Palestinian resistance leaders, as these warrants violate international conventions and resolutions [Article 51 of the UN Charter].

    “We see you haven’t voted yet. Your voting record is public,” a recent mailer to Texas Republicans says. “Your neighbors are watching and will know if you miss this critical runoff election. We will notify President Trump if you don’t vote. You can’t afford to have that on your record.”

    The thing about a "strong" "leader"? Eventually you'll be the one targeted when things get desperate enough. No matter how much you think you are the kind of person who wouldn't be.

    @nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird Also, it would not work with people who are properly educated and know that free elections are by definition secret. But MAGA folks? They almost deserve this.

    #US / Man arrested in attack on UCLA pro-Palestinian protesters

    […] The 18-year-old man was detained at a business in Beverly Hills and booked on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon, police said. He is being held in Los Angeles County jail on $30,000 bail. This appears to be the first arrest of a counterprotester.

    Proud Jewish mother 🙄

    […] In a deleted Facebook post, Edan On’s mother, Sharon On-Siboni, shared a photo of her son from a Fox 11 news segment at #UCLA that she captioned in Hebrew, “Edan went to bully the Palestinian students in the tents at UCLA and played the song that they played to the Nukhba terrorists in prison!” according to a law enforcement source.

    @FantasticalEconomics @failedLyndonLaRouchite @galad @efialto A Jewish student/researcher fluent in Hebrew with a history of being right. I have no reason to doubt that the IDF has now acknowledged this. Some things just are what they seem 😏

    @FantasticalEconomics @failedLyndonLaRouchite @galad @efialto Then, the question of what story to share. This is not a case of books being burned for their content, like the notorious Nazi burning of the library of the Institute of Sexology. It may be sheer vandalism, or (worse) books belonging to an enemy culture slated for destruction. Still some freedom of interpretation there.
