Seriously, that looks good enough to make me at least reconsider unionizing.

Rolling Stone’s Freedom of Information Act request, filed hours after the announcement of his death in November 2023, seeks expedited processing of FBI files related to the former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor to President Nixon.

If this were anyone else I’d criticize Rolling Stone for acting like hungry vultures. But it’s Henry “War Criminal like ten times over” Kissinger. Have at him.

This site has a few photos that illustrate what it looks like.

https://www.mypanhandle.com/news/local-news/bay-county/panama-city-beach/panama-city-beachs-rip-currents-explained/

You can see that it’s fairly narrow, which is why swimming parallel to shore works.

When will scientists just self-publish?

It’s commonplace in my field (nuclear physics) to share the preprint version of your article, typically on arxiv.org. You can update the article as you respond to peer reviewers too. The only difference between this and the paywalls publisher version is that version will have additional formatting edits by the journal.

If you search for articles on google scholar, it groups the preprint and published versions together so it’s easy to find the non-paywalled copy. The standard journals I publish in even sort of encourage this; you can submit the latex documents and figures by just putting the url to an arxiv manuscript.

The US Department of Energy now requires any research they fund be made publicly available. So any article I publish is also automatically posted to osti.gov 1 year after its initial publication. This version is also grouped into the google scholar search results.

It’s an imperfect system, but it’s getting much better than it was even just a decade ago.

Let’s see:

Stephen King source material? Check.

Adapted by Mike Flanagan? Check.

Well then I guess I have to see this. Geralds Game and Doctor Sleep were excellent. Also I’ve read the original short story and without giving anything away, I found it oddly affecting.

This is the same WaPo columnist who wrote Democrats weaponizing flags to intimidate Alito is an embarrassment

So maaayyybe she doesn’t have the best judgment.

macarthur_park ,

The exact same thing happened to me while I was deplaning, a few years prior to Covid. Full face sneeze with no effort to cover their mouth or nose, at like 1 foot away. So I still wear a mask on planes and in the airport.

macarthur_park ,

Yeah, it’s quieter so there’s fewer overall responses even in “popular” posts, but it doesn’t feel like anything gets ignored. If a post is interesting, you’ll get at least a few replies even if it takes a few days.

That part is kinda nice - the lower turnover on the “front page” means you’ll have people reading and commenting on discussions for days. If you reply to a 1-day old post on Reddit the only person who might see/reply to you is the person you replied to.

macarthur_park ,

I’ve gotta hand it to you, that’s a good comparison

macarthur_park ,

Tactical spliffs

macarthur_park ,

Seems like a good math problem.

“Alright class, we have 20 joints with an average of 30 puffs each. There are 35 students, one teacher, and 2 teachers aides. How many puffs does everyone get?”

macarthur_park ,

But it's kind of hard for Republicans to complain when they reject implementing what they want.

I agree with you in principle, but clearly it’s not that hard since they are actively complaining and polls show voters trust Trump and Republicans over Biden to handle immigration. Somehow, they’re never really constrained by reality.

macarthur_park ,

They had how long to codify row vs wade into law and they didn't.

Democrats have had 6 months since 1993 with a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, plus control of the house and White House. Outside of that narrow window during Obama’s first term, they would never have been able to codify Roe v Wade. They used that time to pass the ACA.

macarthur_park ,

Republicans got it done tho, didn't they?

Shrinking the government, reducing services, shutting down programs and deregulating are all much easier than passing laws to guarantee new rights or build new programs. Democrats’ priorities are generally to build new things, Republicans’ are to obstruct or destroy.

So why should I vote D when they can only muster 6 months of actual power in the last 3 decades?

The Inflation Reduction Act is the single largest clean energy policy ever enacted. Just because Democrats are blocked from achieving all of their goals doesn’t mean they are accomplishing nothing.

macarthur_park ,

I pointed out one recent, big accomplishment. If you’re genuinely unaware of anything else they’ve done, you’re welcome to read some of the lengthy lists others have posted in these comments.

macarthur_park ,

You're literally the person saying "In the last 3 decades, the Democrats have only had the ability to do anything for a grand total of 6 months."

I did not say that. I said that the 6 month window was the only time they could pass one specific thing: codifying Roe. As I said in another comment, Democrats may not be able to accomplish every priority due to GOP obstruction, but they have still been able to pass substantial, significant legislation. Not to mention some executive actions like DACA to give protection to Dreamers.

You've already admitted you're the losers.

So who are you voting for in November?

macarthur_park ,

Oh no, not all gun owners who’ve done drugs. Just certain ones.

The 2nd amendment bros aren’t going to help in this case. The NRA declined get involved in the police shooting of Philando Castile who was licensed to carry his gun and who told the police he was legally carrying it. The NRA said it was because he also was in possession of Marijuana, which makes it illegal for him to have a gun.

Some stray thoughts:

  1. I thought Mrs. Alito liked flags? Apparently she only likes certain ones. Right now we know she favors flags that are symbols of the Jan 6 insurrection, and an anti-LGBTQ design of her own creation “which would be white with yellow and orange flames and read, in Italian, “shame.””

  2. Regardless of which ones she likes and doesn’t like, Mrs. Alito has some STRONG opinions on flags. Like, to an unhealthy extent. Seek therapy.

“Look at me, look at me,” Ms. Alito said. “I’m German, from Germany. My heritage is German. You come after me, I’m going to give it back to you.” She did not elaborate.”

  1. The Nazi comparisons write themselves. Surely at some point you have to realize you’re on the wrong side of history when you call for German-style solutions to political problems.

Why was Trump talking about sharks at a campaign event? ( www.usatoday.com )

"It must be because of M.I.T., my relationship with M.I.T., very smart. I say, 'What would happen if the boat sank from its weight and you're in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery is now underwater, and there's a shark that's approximately 10 yards over there?" Trump said. "By the way, lot...

macarthur_park ,

Nonsense, Trump has the best brain! Many people are saying this. Top neurologists come up to him, big strong doctors, with tears in their eyes, saying “sir, you have such a good brain!”

macarthur_park ,

You’re not alone; matter-antimatter asymmetry is one of the big open questions in physics. Most particle processes treat matter and antimatter identically, but there are a few areas where matter and antimatter have slightly different interactions. These occurrences are violations of Charge Parity symmetry aka CP Violation.

There must have been a certain amount of CP violation during the early phases of the Big Bang to explain our matter-dominated universe. But the known amounts of CP Violation are nowhere near enough to explain the asymmetry in matter and antimatter. There are some proposed mechanisms that would violate CP symmetry in sufficient quantities, but these haven’t been experimentally observed. There are ongoing searches to detect these processes, or related processes that would be possible if these existed. Neutrinoless double beta decay searches are one example of these detection efforts.

In summary, there’s a guaranteed Nobel Prize to whoever can answer your question.

macarthur_park ,

Despite space being “empty” there’s still a surprising amount of stuff streaming through it. There are protons, electrons, carbon nuclei, etc constantly slamming into the Earth’s atmosphere, producing showers of radiation. These cosmic rays are the reason so many sensitive physics experiments ( like dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches) are located deep underground. The earth is a good shield against these cosmic backgrounds.

Even if there was an “isolated” antimatter galaxy, it would get bombarded with matter in the form of cosmic rays. The annihilation photons are a really distinct signal that would be hard to miss. There are a number of gamma ray telescopes in space that map out sources of gammas, and they would have detected an antimatter galaxy if it existed.

If the antimatter galaxies are so far away that they’re beyond the visible universe, then there’s still the big question of why there was a segregation of matter and antimatter early on.

macarthur_park ,

Yeah it’s one of those terms that’s unfortunately been co-opted for another definition. Definitely made some of my google searches in grad school feel icky… The physics terminology came first though!

macarthur_park ,

There absolutely are, but I’m not super familiar with all of the consequences of majorana neutrinos. /u/drail@fedia.io might be able to provide a better answer. My background is experimental nuclear physics, so I’m familiar a lot of experiments searching for beyond the standard model physics, but less so with the theory motivation.

One consequence of neutrinos being their own antiparticles is that it breaks lepton number conservation. This also breaks chiral symmetry, since all neutrinos are right-handed and anti-neutrinos are left-handed. This observation would also imply that neutrinos have mass - which is assumed but would be a really big deal to prove.

Am I not supposed to be using OnlyFans as my primary news source?

A probation officer working for the court will prepare a report on the defendant’s background, including any mitigating circumstances, criminal history, behavior, etc that would impact the sentencing. Trump’s gag order violations are likely going to be used to justify stricter sentencing.

macarthur_park ,

None of the affected models are Sonatas though, despite them being number 2 in this list of stolen cars.

macarthur_park ,

Huh, good to know. Thanks for the link!

I drive a Sonata, but this says it only affects models without a pushbutton start. I assume I would’ve been contacted if my model had this issue, but I’ll have to look into it.

I used to use Memmy before development stopped. I found Voyager had all the features/UI that I wanted and used that for a while. Recently I’ve started trying Arctic - it’s similar to Voyager but has a few UI tweaks I prefer.

Edit: oh and both of these apps support instance blocking

macarthur_park ,

No problem! Also your response just reminded me of one key feature that Arctic has that Voyager doesn’t yet: push notifications.

macarthur_park ,

I assume you mean that you learned this news via a meme, but i would honestly prefer all my news in the form Eric Carle books.

It’s an infinitely more noble cause than the what the Confederacy fought for. Granted, that’s a low bar…

What was that thing people shouted a long time ago? No taxation without representation?

Oh, they got that quote all screwed up. It should say: “No! Taxation without representation!”

macarthur_park ,

By dragging it out this long, she made it impossible for Trump’s other cases in Georgia and DC to be scheduled.

macarthur_park ,

Imagining becoming president in 2025 and sending Mr. Biden’s dog to meet his maker, Ms. Noem added: “Commander, say hello to Cricket for me.”

Noem appears to be targeting the “pro dog killing” portion of the electorate. Time will tell if Trump considers this more of an asset or a liability in his potential running mate.

macarthur_park ,

That’s wild. I’ve always sent people copies when they reach out. It’s especially easy to do so with ResearchGate, but that does require the requester make an account there.

Another option is to ask a librarian to find that specific article, rather than getting them to subscribe to the journal. I had to do this once in grad school for an article in a discontinued journal from the 70s. The librarian found another library that had it and they faxed a copy.

macarthur_park ,

Note that what the mythbusters looked at was a form of ion propulsion. The high voltage on the sharp boundary of the aluminum foil repels air molecules. If you put one of those in a vacuum (or space) it wouldn’t have any thrust.

macarthur_park ,

I’m guessing it’s “the wall” that Trump always talks about building

macarthur_park ,

Nah, democrats have a majority in the senate and republicans removed the ability to filibuster Supreme Court confirmations in order to seat Gorsuch. The 60 vote requirement was still in place in 2016 when democrats tried to fill scalia’s seat, and enough democrats were unwilling to change the rules to remove that requirement. Now that it’s gone there shouldn’t be any issue confirming a new justice.

macarthur_park ,

About 1 in 4 adults in the US identify as evangelical. They also have a higher voting rate than other groups, so unfortunately their opinions have an effect.

The fact that 80% of the evangelical vote went to trump in both 2016 and 2020, and that their support appears to still be about the same is one of the key reasons Trump is still a viable candidate.

macarthur_park ,

As annoying as it is to lug a bag around and find room for it, I much prefer this to checking it. There’s the small but nonzero chance your bag doesn’t make it to your destination, plus the added time waiting at baggage return.

macarthur_park ,

God forbid they elect Mark Robinson as governor, then you have state level oppression again.

At an event in Greenville, Robinson said people who “are confused” about their gender should “find a corner outside somewhere to go” to the bathroom.

I lived in Chapel Hill during the 2016 election. The one silver lining to that Election Day was voting Pat McCrory out of office after his own bathroom bill nonsense.

They initially charged users for it. Eventually they made it free to individuals but charged businesses. They also advertised on the home page.

    Possibly a non-sequitor fallacy?

A non sequitur fallacy is a statement or conclusion that does not follow logically from what preceded it. Non sequiturs can be responses that have nothing to do with the conversation or flawed conclusions “based” on what preceded them.
