Landlords arent going to want to install solar on the roofs to absorb some of that energy. They probably think it looks ugly.
Thats the real problem.

There are way more companies who want to text-mine user content than there are blind people using the internet to read my content.

Essentially, It really isnt that hard.
But
A) there is no unified project for the masses.
B) it is very hard to create a universal search engine that gives you needed info for something extremely unexpected like "reggae feline flames scanner" .

I dont think paying money is the answer. But it may make sense for some people in some cases.
For example: for someone who uses gmail.. switching to protonmail is a huge leap. And donating money(or buying service) is a way to ensure that it remains sustainable and continues to grow.

I hear people frequently say this.

Searx is basically a proxy. If you had an actual proxy.. you would achieve the exact same benefits. Its good for making it difficult.. or extremely difficult to tie a person's real identity, directly to their search query.
Another thing that searx does is sends your query to google. This is not good for privacy. But sometimes it gives you additional results.

It would be dfficult to keep all kinds of random things in an affordable database.

I'm more concerned about the meaning of life. Which, conveniently is 42.

What are the most private social media platforms?

I've been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

Indicative of a failed system OR a abusive system.
Pick one.
There are no other explanations.
Pick one.

Bacterial enzyme strips away blood types to create universal donor blood ( newatlas.com )

"Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Lund University, Sweden, have used enzymes produced by a common gut bacteria to remove the A and B antigens from red blood cells, bringing them one step closer to creating universal donor blood."

When was the last time you felt helpless in life?

I'm 24 and dealing with high blood pressure. I've seen five doctors, had countless tests, and they all say the same thing: "Take these pills and try to reduce pressure in your life." It's as though my blood pressure and heart rate have minds of their own, fluctuating freely without any reason....

unions do more than just strong-arm negotiation.
"While union representation is not a magic bullet to workplace safety problems, there is little doubt that it makes a positive difference. A recent report surveying the construction industry published by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute based on publicly reported OSHA data found that union worksites are 19% less likely to have an OSHA violation and had 34% fewer violations per OSHA inspection than non-union worksites. Overall, while unions represent 14% of the construction industry employees, their employers account for only 5% of the industry’s OSHA violations."

i have heard it suggested that it could be national goverment who did this. so that means it could be israel, america, or china, etc .
i view this as potentially very well funded governments vs ordinary people. we never stood a chance.

Newbie here, how can i tell if lucky patcher is safe?

I've seen multiple people here talk about lucky patcher and wanted to try it out, found the official site though reddit (cos I've had google give me badware links for things like these before) and the site rang every alarm bell in my brain....

whether or not tiktok spreads misinformation..* i do not know.*
but its the only platform i know that feeds your political tendancies if you continually seek it out.
i am very certain that other platforms tend to funnel you toward trad lib (if anything at all!)
so, what some people claim about mainstream censorship.. is true. (in my experience)

Is there any medicine that can give me happy hormones and does not need a doctor's prescription?

Things are becoming more depressing every day and I can't afford for professionals and don't want to jump to the last resort or drugs. Is there a medicine that can make me happy if I take it in proper doses and does not require a doctor's prescription?

AI’s excessive water consumption threatens to drown out its environmental contributions, researchers say ( theconversation.com )

Initial research shows that AI has a significant water footprint. It uses water both for cooling the servers that power its computations and for producing the energy it consumes. As AI becomes more integrated into our societies, its water footprint will inevitably grow....

thats an interesting argument ( for the sake of argument or rhetoric).

my claim is that tiktok provides irreplacable value as a service that i choose to use.

you claim is that i cannot claim that tiktok's information is scarce.

i would argue that its not simply limited only to said info.. its also alot of other factors.

Lawmakers pass milestone privacy bill overshadowed by TikTok fever ( www.politico.com )

The data-privacy bill passed Wednesday, the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act, H.R. 7520, is highly targeted: It prevents any companies considered data brokers — third-party buyers and sellers of personal information — from selling that information to China, Russia or other “foreign adversaries.”...

Android Microphone Snooping ( lemmy.world )

So I had a verbal conversation with a coworker yesterday and now I'm getting fed very specific ads. No possible way it's accidental.
