Well, I’ve read a lot of theory, and I’m pretty sure our best bet is posting memes online, crossing our fingers, and hoping for the best. We definitely shouldn’t go outside and talk to people, that’ll never work

Yep. Winter in Michigan is a long gray hell. The summers are beautiful though! It’s enough that by June you’ve forgiven yourself for moving to a place with winters like that, until it’s January again and you’re wishing for a single ray of sunshine.

Falling, getting into a fight, being attacked, or watching a disaster happen. I regularly get night terrors, where I’ll wake up screaming. It’s genetic, apparently, my dad and his dad both had them too. My brothers get them too. I don’t get them much any more, regular cannabis use has turned off pretty much all my dreams. Shit gets whack when I stop, the dreams come back way more realistic and intense.

“The term ‘tankie’ was originally used by dissident Marxist–Leninists to describe members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB) who followed the party line of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). Specifically, it was used to distinguish party members who spoke out in defense of the Soviet use of tanks to suppress the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the 1968 Prague Spring, or who more broadly adhered to pro-Soviet positions.”

Genuinely curious - what do we know makes code very bad?

Nope, Ottawa County is still just a county. However, in the last election, the county commission got taken over by Ottawa Impact, a group of extremely far right activists that have proven very popular to a smaller segment of the population, and wildly unpopular with the majority of people in and around the county. It appears that there’s starting to be a backlash to their idiocy and hatred from the folks with any sense, it’s good to see

IIRC, it’s the same testosterone-y hormone that determines how good you are at growing a beard that also determines how aggressively you go bald. So there’s lots of folks in this boat with us

Morons. Imagine turning down funding to improve your state to score political points. I feel for the people who live there that don’t support DeSantis - they didn’t ask for this, and yet they have to suffer from the poor decision making of their fellow citizens.

Plunge in Storage Battery Costs Will Speed Shift to Renewable Energy, Says IEA ( hardware.slashdot.org )

"In less than 15 years, battery costs have fallen by more than 90%," according to a new report from the International Energy Agency, "one of the fastest declines ever seen in clean energy technologies." And it's expected to get even cheaper, reports Reuters: An expected sharp fall in battery costs for energy storage in coming...

“No one ever get fired for hiring McKinsey”

They fucking should. I mean, I understand why that doesn’t happen, given the world we live in, but man… McKinsey is fucking evil incarnate

SandbagTiara2816 ,

Neat! I’ll probably try it out. Like it or not, short form video is really popular now, so this feels like a good thing to grow Pixelfed and the fediverse

We had instant chemistry… because we literally had the recitation and lab for our Chem 102 class together

SandbagTiara2816 OP ,

It’s convention, I think. If I remember correctly, you always put y on the left, because you can also write equations as functions of a variable, x, with the symbology f(x) = mx + b. That way you can integrate and derive the function easily, since m and b are constants, and all your x variables are on one side.

If I were to encounter x = my + b, the first thing I would do, just by nature at this point, would be to convert it to y = (x - b) / m.

It’s been a while since I took math, and I was never the best, so others should feel free to correct me.

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald and the brave men who died on board

How do you feel confident in the workplace?

I was a student for many years (5 years of undergrad, 2.5 years of grad school), and I became very comfortable with always being able to look at the syllabus and my grade and know what I needed to do and how well I was performing. Work isn’t like that. Like I think is normal, I get a performance review once a year. I find this...

SandbagTiara2816 OP ,

Yeah, impostor syndrome is a good way to describe it, and it does indeed suck. That’s all good advice though, thank you! It is such a strange change of pace to be judged on perception and not purely ability, especially since I feel like I’m not very good at reading other people and knowing how to manage relationships like that. People skills aren’t my forte, hence a career in engineering lol

Fortunately I think my manager does view me well, so I can try to reassure myself with that

SandbagTiara2816 OP ,

I don’t think there is anything in particular that makes me uneasy in this job, but it has happened to me before that I thought things were fine when I was unexpectedly let go. So the fear is a little more real in that sense

Of course there are times when I look at the internet on my phone or whatever, but I have plenty of work to keep me busy, and I’m not falling behind either. So I assume that I’m doing the right amount of work, since no one is complaining

It’s too complicated a decision to discuss on a wide basis. It’s a highly personal decision that parents should make for themselves. The fight against climate change is far from over, and there were still people having kids during the Black Death.

I find the stackable layers interesting, but I like the decentralization of the fediverse. I’m way outside my realm of expertise here, but would it be possible for a platform to adopt both?

    SandbagTiara2816 ,

Neat, I’ll have to look into it. Thanks!

Why did it irritate folks at bluesky?

In my experience, predominantly male environments are fairly disdainful of anything non-technical and include a lot of unexamined biased views toward women. Workplaces with more women, or a balance of both, don’t have the same issue, in my experience.

I’ve worked predominantly in two fields - engineering and environmental policy. I find the culture of engineering to be pretty toxic - too many conservative men. Environmental policy suffers from too much being demanded of workers, I think mostly because of the expectation that you’re motivated by your passion, rather than being paid for your time. I don’t know if that is directly tied to the gender balance in the workplace, but certainly women historically and presently are not compensated fairly for their work.

It’s a shame that I’m better at doing engineering, because I vastly prefer to not work in a place where I can hear my boss listen to Hannity every day through the wall.

Did you read the article? Or did you just see ‘North Carolina’ in the title and decide to complain about the United States?
