I learned Latin and in the process learned that quite a lot if what makes English fucked up was a movement a couple of hundred years ago to make it more like Latin.

Games like Bloodborne (I’m bad at video games)

I want to play this game so so badly. The 19th century gothic theme, hack n slash play style and intriguing storyline are all right up my alley. But after spending 3 hours getting no further than the section past the first mob at the bomb-fire… I just can’t do it. I work full time and don’t have it in me to sink hours into...

Well, there are two categories...

The style of gameplay, which is "Souls-like", a particularly player-antagonistic form of gameplay. Named after the first most popular entries in the line "Demon's Souls" and "Dark Souls". You really have to have an almost masochistic streak to enjoy them.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulslike

People who like them really REALLY like them.

The other category is the design aesthetic. Kind of an industrial, Victorian, steampunk look and feel. Fortunately there are way, WAY more accessible games with a similar look:

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate:
PC / PlayStation 4 / Xbox One

Dishonored:
PlayStation 3 / Windows / Xbox 360 / PlayStation 4 / Xbox One

Dishonored 2:

Let me tell you a story about this guy named R. Buckminster Fuller...

About 100 years ago or so, he was bankrupt. No job, no potential for a job, he had a wife and kids he couldn't provide for, and with a life insurance policy that made him literally worth more dead than alive.

He was standing on the edge of one of Lake Michigan, contemplating throwing himself in so at least his wife could collect the insurance money, when he had this sudden realization...

That maybe, just maybe, the universe had some purpose for him after all, and if he threw himself in, he'd never find out what it was.

So he made a wager with himself, to keep it together long enough to see where this would all go.

"If I take oath never again to work for my own advantaging and to work only for all others for whom my experience-gained knowledge may be of benefit, I may be justified in not throwing myself away. This will, of course, mean that I will not be able to escape the pain and mortification of being an absolute failure in playing the game of life as it has been taught to me.

I sought to use myself as my scientific “guinea pig” in a lifelong experiment designed to discover what — if anything — a healthy young male human of average size, experience, and capability, with an economically dependent wife and child, starting without capital or any kind of wealth, cash savings, credit, or university degree, could effectively do that could not be done be great nations or great private enterprise to lastingly improve the physical protection and support of all human lives.

Friends would say, “You are being treacherous to your wife and child, not going out to earn a living for them. Come over here and we will give you a very good job.” When, persuaded by their obvious generosity and concern, I did yield, everything went wrong; and every time I went “off the deep end” again, working only for everybody without salary, everything went right again."

Did it work? Well, he went on to hold 28 patents, including, notably, the geodesic dome.

https://medium.com/@bbirdwell4711/why-buckminster-fuller-is-more-interesting-than-you-thought-f9d213eb0cb7

"Not only did Bucky and his family survive the experiment, they thrived. Without any kind of public relations or marketing support, he would eventually be mentioned in over 100,000 articles, books, and broadcasts. In his last twenty years of life he circled the globe 47 times and spoke to 30,000 students. He published 24 books and funneled $20 million into prototyping and design of dozens of artifacts, from domes to cars to prefab bathrooms. Though his annual earnings eventually rose to $250,000, he never made a profit; he always spent every dollar on research and development, “always operating in proximity to bankruptcy without going bankrupt.”"

SSNs aren't tricky by design.

3 digit area number, 2 digit group number, 4 digit serial number.

https://www.ssa.gov/history/ssn/geocard.html

So 1,000 combinations x 99 combinations (00 is not a choice) x 10,000 combinations.

990,000,000 potential SSNs. The only trick would be determining which ones are valid and which are not.

(0... 0... 0... - 0... 0... - 0... 0... 0... 2 - DAMN YOU ROOSEVELT!)

In any given area and group there are only 10,000 SSNs.

If I have multiple devices synced, and I delete something from one of them, it's not unreasonable to think it should be deleted from all of them.

For example, a shared calendar item on my phone, tablet and laptop. If I delete it on one, it should be deleted from all of them.

If Apple synced the messages, but not the delete operation, yeah... that's a problem.

But it's also on the guy for setting up/not disabling sharing in the first place.

Hey now, Obama "did something"... he expanded gun rights. :)

https://www.thoughtco.com/obama-gun-laws-passed-by-congress-3367595

"One of the laws allows gun owners to carry weapons in national parks; that law took effect in February 2012 and replaced President Ronald Reagan's policy that required guns to be locked in glove compartments of trunks of cars that enter national parks.

Another gun law signed by Obama allows Amtrak passengers to carry guns in checked baggage, a move that reversed a measure put in place after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001."

There's a lot wrong about this article, there's so much to unpack:

"Thus, the idea that Biden is personally responsible for the surge of inflation in 2022 — and that he cannot be trusted to effectively manage the economy for that reason — appears deeply rooted in voters’ minds."

That's not why Biden isn't trusted on inflation, the reason he's not trusted is because when people tell him the economy is bad and they're hurting, he ignores their personal experience and rolls back on "What are you talking about, Jack? Economy's great!"

https://www.inquirer.com/opinion/biden-economy-inflation-elections-prices-20240429.html

"The fact that wages have been rising much faster than prices for more than a year has left no dent on this impression."

Because the only way to reap the benefits of rising wages is to change jobs. People remaining in the same job have seen stagnant wage growth.

https://www.resumebuilder.com/half-of-companies-may-not-give-cost-of-living-raises-in-2024/

So inflation is going up, wages are stagnant, that means you're effectively getting a pay cut and the President goes "What's wrong, man? Look at the GDP!"

The same goes for a decline in rental prices. You don't see the decrease if you're in a lease. If you move you might get a break.

"Another few months of falling inflation could move the needle a bit, but there’s little reason to assume that such a development will dramatically change public opinion."

Inflation is not falling, it's increasing slower than it was. Last month it went up 3.3%, the month before, 3.5%. The fact that it went up .2% slower than before doesn't mean it's going down.

That's what I was thinking... 2001 to 2003? Being gay didn't seem to hurt Bryan Singer... X-Men was 2000. X2 was 2003.

Singer left the franchise to do Superman Returns in 2006.

In popular culture, it goes back to DC comics, specifically Flash #123 in September of 1961.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_of_Two_Worlds

First, a little comic book history... DC set the standard for Superhero comics in 1938 when they introduced Superman. Following that was the creation of character after character.

This was called "The Golden Age" of comics.

The 1950s rolled around and superhero books kind of faded away, replaced by crime and horror books. This drew the attention of Frederic Wertham, a child psychologist, who sought to blame all of societies ills on comic books.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seduction_of_the_Innocent

This inspired the creation of the Comics Code Authority which controlled what could and could not be published.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_Code_Authority

2 years after Seduction of the Innocent, DC re-booted superhero comics with Showcase #4, introducing a new version of a Golden Age character called The Flash:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Age_of_Comic_Books

Shortly after that, just like many characters appearing after the introduction of Superman 20 years earlier, a whole host of new characters appeared in the Silver Age, all approved by the Comics Code.

By 1961, DC was facing questions from fans about "Wait, how can there be two Flashes? Or two Green Lanterns? Where are the original characters?"

To explain this, they invented the concept of "Earth 1" and "Earth 2".

All the current characters and stories were happening on Earth 1, all the Golden Age characters and stories were on Earth 2.

Two planets separated by a vibrational difference, a difference that the Flashes of both worlds were able to cross.

And so Flash #123 introduced the whole Earth1 / Earth 2 concept in 1961.

Following that, they set up an annual crossover event between the Justice League (Earth 1) and the Justice Society (Earth 2), as a "CRISIS ON EARTH..."

‘They’re not like puppy dogs. They should be respected’: how to swim with sharks in British waters ( www.theguardian.com )

We have only been waiting in the grey Atlantic swell a few moments when the first flash of metallic blue appears in the water. A blue shark, a few miles from the coast of Penzance in Cornwall, emerges from the depths. It is time to get in the water – but part of my brain rebels....

Dolphins, sea lions, seals, and otters are also not like puppy dogs and should also be respected.

That being said, I'd feel way more comfortable swimming with my oxygen breathing mammalian bretheren than the icthyan terrors.

A permanent rise, yes, but storm surges and stuff will make Miami uninhabitable far sooner than that.

Miami elevation is 6 feet? Something like that?
