You have a good sense of color and design, but you need help with anatomy and perspective.

There are a TON of good books out there, but I'd also suggest reading some of the masters of the form:

Take it with a grain of salt since the description is coming from an MSNBC host.

But she's right in that, when it comes to deciding sentencing, this will not do him any favors.

Maximum sentence is 4 years per count +$5,000 fine.

So he'll likely get multiple 4 year sentences, served concurrently, and $5K x 34... $170,000 fine.

Cohen was a first time offender and did 3 years for the same crime.

jordanlund Mod ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Put him in a jail cell, post Secret Service outside the door. Problem solved. :)

I know, I know, it's not that simple. Some poor bastard is going to have to make sure he doesn't drop the soap in the shower.

But if Martha Stewart was kept safe, they can do it for Trump.

jordanlund Mod ,

But then if he forges fake business records to pay the fine... :)

It might not be fair to call her a shit candidate, on paper she was a very good candidate, but her personality and willingness to take Michigan and Wisconsin for granted doomed her.

Anyone else with her credentials could have won.

jordanlund Mod ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Again, look at the other people involved. Cohen got 3 years for his part in it, Alan Weisselberg, while not convicted for this, got 5 months for his role in another Trump ordered scheme.

So, yeah, it does happen for white collar crime. When you consider 34 counts and his lack of contrition, I can see the Judge hitting him with the max, which, granted, is only 4 years.

Sent a note to my Senators and Congressman:

"ATF Form 4473 is required for any gun purchase and it has an entire section regarding things that disqualify a purchaser from owning a gun, notably line 21, items c and d:

“c. Are you under indictment or information in any court for a felony, or any other crime for which the judge could imprison you for more  than one year, or are you a current member of the military who has been charged with violation(s) of the Uniform Code of Military  Justice and whose charge(s) have been referred to a general court-martial?

d. Have you ever been convicted in any court, including a military court, of a felony, or any other crime for which the judge could have imprisoned you for more than one year, even if you received a shorter sentence including probation?”

Currently, we have, running for President, a person who has just been convicted, qualifying them under line d, and, who is facing 3 other indictments, qualifying them under line c.

If they aren’t qualified to own a gun, and, in fact could be arrested for “felon in possession” should he obtain a gun, how on earth does that allow him to be qualified to lead the armed forces as “Commander in Chief”? Why would he be allowed access to the “nuclear football” which is, really, the ultimate gun?

Can we please get some kind of legislation dealing with this? Either barring convicted felons from the office of the President, or, alternately, highly restricting felonious Presidential access to the military and high order weapons?"

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Oregon Senators and Representatives are remarkably responsive... But we need more people to message their Representatives.

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

If being a felon bars you from owning a gun, why should a felon be allowed to command all the guns in the US military?

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

A lot of it depends on timing.

There's a really good fictional take from before Bush/Gore, called "The People's Choice" by Jeff Greenfield of all people.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_People%27s_Choice_(novel)

Candidate wins the election, but dies before the electoral college votes.

So... the VP guy wins? Yeah, no. He wasn't the candidate and can't assume the role of President because he was never affirmed as Vice President.

So... the other candidate wins? Yeah, no. They didn't get enough electoral college votes to be President.

So it all comes down to faithful and faithless electors.

"Pay later plans"? Other than credit cards, WTF are you talking about?

Yeah, I have a credit card that pays me back 5% cash on grocery store purchases. It would be stupid NOT to use it, then I pay the card off every pay day.

Groceries + free money.

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

No, but as someone who, you know, buys groceries on the regular, I've never seen the sort of payment plan they're talking about.

Yeah, my Amazon card has that option, so does PayPal, but I haven't seen a grocery store that takes PayPal.

Gun ownership by party:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/249775/percentage-of-population-in-the-us-owning-a-gun-by-party-affiliation/

48% of Republicans personally own a gun.
66% of Republicans live in a gun owning household.

20% and 31% on the Democratic side.

32% and 42% for Independents.

https://ballotpedia.org/Partisan_affiliations_of_registered_voters

"number of registered voters by partisan affiliations in states that allow voters to register by party and report those totals publicly"

So only about 30 states + the US Virgin Islands, so these numbers will be low.

"45 million registered voters in these areas identified themselves as Democrats."

45 * .2 = 9,000,000 Democratic gun owners, and 13,950,000 Democrats living in gun owning households.

"35.7 million registered voters identified themselves as Republicans"

35.7 * .48 = 17,136,000 Republican gun owners and 23,562,000 Republicans living in gun owning households.

"32.5 million registered voters identified themselves as independents"

32.5 * .32 = 10,400,000 Independent gun owners and 13,650,000 Independents living in gun owning households.

I want to get into Doctor Who, but it seems daunting and massive, any suggestions where to start?

Should I watch all 20 years of the original run or just begin with the new one which I think is been around for 15 years? What are the best episodes? I've seen only a handful of the old and New ones but I liked what Ive seen, just hoping for a guide to really get into it

jordanlund ,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

The key thing to understand is that The Doctor is on a constant rotation. Some are really liked, some are not. So if you start watching one doctor, and for whatever reason it just doesn't hit for you, try another one. :)

Right now, for a brand new viewer, Disney+ is treating the new Doctor as "Season 1" and it's not awful. I think there are better seasons, but I'm biased.

It IS better than the last few though.

Free streaming services have a "Doctor Who Channel" which is all the old classic Who, I like to put it on as background noise.

If it's black and white, that means it's either Doctor #1 or #2. All the others are color.

White hair and velvet jacket? #3
Long scarf? #4 - My first and favorite.
Cricket Jacket? #5
Multi-colored jacket that makes no sense? #6
Straw hat and umbrella? #7

After that, #8 was a TV movie.

Then the show rebooted with #9. Bald, slick leather jacket.

- Skinny guy, current popular favorite. Brown or blue suit, converse sneakers.

- Kind of goofy looking, bow ties are cool.

- Angry attack eyebrows.

- First female doctor.

The show kind of started losing steam at the end of , and never really recovered. and were fine, but they needed better writers.

- the current doctor on Disney+, has writers and show-runners from the #9 and eras, so a big up tick in quality.

Enterprise will love it because it will allow them timestamped access to everything their employees are doing during the day.

They will have it set up to alert on a various things...

"So, Bob, you were playing Minesweeper from 9:45 to 9:53, was that a scheduled break for you?"

"Jane, your screen showed no substantive changes from 1:03 to 4:15, you weren't in a meeting, what were you doing?"

I don't think you can say "letting in" is accurate.

On average in 2024 the US is detaining 41,500 migrants PER DAY.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/04/25/rights-groups-oppose-president-bidens-expansion-ice-detention

So today being the 154th day of the year... 6,391,000 people detained so far this year?

Physical Media collectors, do you or do you not keep the cases to your discs?

I don't, well, for a long time I didn't because it was a storage space issue. I've thrifted for movies and shows and put the discs in those big disc booklets that can be hard to carry. But at the same time they kept things in one place than having to play around with cases and whatnot....

I mean, the constitution specifically outlines who is disqualified from voting, so the inherent assumption would be, if you aren't disqualified, then you have the right to vote:

https://law.justia.com/constitution/kansas/art5.html

Article 5:

Justia  US Law  Kansas Law  Kansas Constitution  Article 5: Suffrage

Article 5: Suffrage

§ 1: Qualifications of electors. Every citizen of the United States who has attained the age of eighteen years and who resides in the voting area in which he or she seeks to vote shall be deemed a qualified elector. Laws of this state relating to voting for presidential electors and candidates for the office of president and vice-president of the United States shall comply with the laws of the United States relating thereto. A citizen of the United States, who is otherwise quali fied to vote in Kansas for presidential electors and candidates for the offices of president and vice-president of the United States may vote for such officers either in person or by absentee ballot notwithstanding the fact that such person may have becom e a nonresident of this state if his or her removal from this state occurs during a period in accordance with federal law next preceding such election. A person who is otherwise a qualified elector may vote in the voting area of his or her former residenc e either in person or by absentee ballot notwithstanding the fact that such person may have become a nonresident of such voting area during a period prescribed by law next preceding the election at which he or she seeks to vote, if his new residence is in another voting area in the state of Kansas.

§ 2: Disqualification to vote. The legislature may, by law, exclude persons from voting because of mental illness or commitment to a jail or penal institution. No person convicted of a felony under the laws of any state or of the United States, unless pardoned or restored to his civil rights, shall be qualified to vote.

§ 4: Proof of right to vote. . The legislature shall provide by law for proper proofs of the right of suffrage.

More than that, if the old woman was Ruby, which I'm proud to say I clocked pretty early on, how did she maintain exactly 73 yards all the time? She doesn't have magical distance sensing powers.

And apparently the ability to teleport as we saw in the train scene.

BUT - We also had a 2nd appearance of the mysterious neighbor, so I expect there will be an episode later in the series that wraps all this up tight.
