I was flabbergasted when I heard someone say something like those first two paragraphs in real life. Like... dude... you listened to somebody feed you all of that nonsense and didn't immediately think, "maybe I should double check this real quick and see if anyone who studies this for realsies came to the same conclusion?"

It had that extra 😚👌 of racism, because of course they were talking about how Michelle Obama was a transwoman.

The Biden administration is playing a shell game with the Gaza ceasefire that aims to trick the Democratic base into thinking meaningful action is taking place to end fighting while still allowing Israel to continue its genocidal campaign.

Biden needs to be held to a higher standard than Donald fucking Trump.

If my evaluations at work compared me to the absolute least competent person to do my job, I wouldn't really have much incentive to listen to any feedback, much less act on it. I don't get to justify myself by saying "I'm a better employee than Donald Trump would be." Oh, and it's worth noting that my job has a vastly smaller impact on people's lives than the goddamn President of the United States.

And here's the painfully obvious irony about what you're saying - if Biden were to actually get his head out of his ass regarding the atrocities that Israel is committing with US support, it would help his chances of reelection. Do you want Trump to win? If not, why are you so against the idea of trying to stop US involvement in the mass murder of innocent people?

I am very much in favor of everyone voting in every election they can (even though it seems like Democrats are doing a lot to keep people from wanting to). Voting is not sufficient by itself, but if voting made any difference, it would be illegal... and Republicans are trying very hard to make it illegal for many people to vote.

If having to make the trip yourself is a hurdle, then there may be people or organizations in your area who help people get rides to their polling place.

There's a huge discrepancy in what people mean when they say "freedom" in this country which makes these conversations difficult.

When conservatives talk about "freedom" they're generally talking about being free of responsibility for their actions and free of the obligations that are inherent in being part of a society.

I'm much more interested in this kind of freedom - freedom from want and fear.

Today in Labor History May 4, 1970: Ohio National Guards murdered four students at Kent State University. They also injured nine others, including one who was permanently paralyzed. During the massacre, they fired 67 rounds in 13 seconds at the unarmed crowd. The students were protesting the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. With the current wave of student protests against the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the government’s response is looking sickeningly similar to its response to student protests in the early 70s: Violent repression, use of chemical agents, snipers on rooftops. If the vitriolic rhetoric of politicians and pundits continues, another student massacre seems imminent.

Very shortly after the National Guard murdered these students, Americans were asked who was more at fault for the tragedy. Roughly 60% said that the students were to blame and only about 10% blamed the National Guard.

Some 52 years ago, when I was in 4th grade of primary school, I found a book "who put glasses on the kid's eyes" in a small book shop in open bazaar of my hometown Ahvaz in khuzestan province of Iran.

A few days later, we had to bring a book to school and read it in front of the class. Happy as I was to have found a great book, I took it to school and read it in front of the class.

I couldn't understand why my teacher was acting so scared and stopped me before I had finished the book and sent me to the principals office.
I was nervous, didn't know what I had done wrong and our principal, who was a really nice man, and went to the same university as my oldest sister took the book and asked me where I had bought it. I knew something was wrong, so I said I bought it at the book store of our local mosque, to protect the guy who was my source of cheap and lovely books and would buy back my old ones to help me afford buying new ones.

In the evening my father came home, agitated and clearly upset. Asked me what I have done and I explained the situation, including the fact that I lied about wher I had bought the book. Told him the highlight of the book about a happy child who was living in a town with happy people who were all wearing glasses.

He was seeing flowers, colorful houses. Nice people and happy children all around him, birds flying in the sky and everyone were so friendly to him.

Until one day he fell of and his glasses broke. He couldn't believe his eyes, the flowers, colorful houses and happy people were all gone. All he could see was a run down city, with piles of garbage everywhere, people wearing worn out clothes, looking hungry and sick.

He was nece happy after that, he couldn't believe that everyone were walking around with glasses and we're happy all the time. But he was sad and miserable, because he had seen his town without those glasses.

Anyway. My father took me to a building close to the main police station on the other side of the Karun river, he spent almost entire day in a room where I could people screaming at him and a few times someone his the table very hard. But couldn't hear what they were saying.
My dad came out. Pulled my hand without saying a word, we walked for an hour to get home, didn't take taxi as we used to do.

He didn't say a word during the whole day and told me to go over my books and bring all the books I had bought from that shop, he through them in a metal bucket and poured some fuel over it, set them on fire and waited until they were completely burned, mixed the ashes to turn them into dust, filled the bucket with water and through it in the toilet.

He told me to never go back to that shop and be careful to take any books to school from now on.

That' was my first interaction with the notorious Savak police of Shah of Iran. In the next days, all the 4 book stores in our town were raided. Books confiscated and doors locked. Never heard about any of them again.

Reading the comments of pro Israeli accounts on mastodon reminded me of that book and that experience that changed my life when I was only 8 years old.

This post specially triggered those memories. Unlike the kid in my book and the people living in the town, these people know very well tat what they are posting is not true, they have seen the horror of the past 76 years of occupation, they have seen the 66 times they were subject to UNSC charges, and 45 that were vetoed by the US..

But they don't care, they see themselves as victims. They don't see the millions of starving palestinians, or the millions living in refuge camps around the world as worthy of their empathy or cause of why Palestinians and some of the world is fed up with their out of control criminal behavior

They don't have glasses on their eyes, they have chosen to be selective and above the laws of the world.

In a city called The Dalles, in Oregon, USA, local people were worried that Google’s water use was soaring. As is so often the case, the city officials, who had given Google hundreds of millions in tax breaks, had no intention of letting anyone know how much water Google was using. It was up to a local paper, The Oregonian, to try and find out. They were forced to bring a case to court. City officials were ordered by Google to claim that Google’s use of scarce pubic water was a “trade secret”.

And they were pretty flummoxed. Yeah, they said, this is life. What did you expect? This is what you do and then you die.

These are the same people who showed my Koyaanisqatsi when I was like six and encouraged me to internalize its message that capitalist modernity is catastrophically, irrevocably broken and unsustainable.

So-called 'biofuels' are NOT a climate solution. They are capitalist industrialist greenwashing at its worst.

Below is a statement posted Friday by Greta Thunberg. She and a group of activists are protesting in Sundsvall, Sweden, outside the annual general meeting of Svenska Cellulosa.

    Here is what Greta wrote...

Forestry is Sweden's single largest emitter of greenhouse gases and the main driving factor behind loss of habitat and species.

Svenska Cellulosa (SCA) is Europe’s largest private forest owner, and we are demanding an end to their systematic clear-cutting of irreplaceable natural forests with high importance for climate and biodiversity. After the demonstration, some of us went inside the meeting to demand accountability.

SCA's logging is built on systematically expanding into the last remaining natural forests, forests whose conditions are vital for many species and which have stored carbon for up to thousands of years, and thus both slow down and act as protection against the climate crisis.

These ecosystems are destroyed to make place for the replanting of environmentally harmful monoculture tree plantations. Often, these monocultures consist of invasive lodgepole pine, which is devastating for indigenous Sámi reindeer herding.

Forest companies, despite their claims, don't consult with Sámi villages on equal terms, and can more or less freely log due to loopholes in laws that they use to their advantage. The Sámi are heavily affected by both the climate crisis & industries like mining and forestry.

All these factors are extensions of the colonialism that has been going on in Sweden for centuries.

Clear-cutting is also a climate bomb. The carbon emitted during clearcuts takes many decades for the replanted trees to reabsorb. This is time we do not have.

After harvesting, the majority of the biomass goes to short-lived products and bioenergy with a higher carbon footprint than burning fossil fuels. Biofuels are nevertheless seen by many as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, much to the delight of the forest lobby. They are the ones who have largely created and spread this greenwashed narrative, due to enormous financial interests.

The burning of biomass leads to more carbon dioxide emissions per unit of energy than other fossil fuels. But, thanks to loopholes in international climate frameworks, it is counted as "climate neutral," so these emissions are not counted in the statistics. Many countries' climate policies, including Sweden's, are completely dependent on these loopholes which actually do more harm than good, not only for the climate but also for the environment and biological diversity.

The level of awareness around these issues is almost non-existent. In this knowledge gap, false solutions to the climate and environmental crisis flourish. False solutions that lead to increased exploitation of nature, continued emissions of greenhouse gases that destabilise the planet and cause the death and suffering of countless people, and continued colonisation and destruction of lands that we all depend on.

We demand protection and restoration of forest ecosystems, an end to clear-cutting and the planting of lodgepole pine as well as a transition to making long-lived products.

    jargoggles ,
    @jargoggles@kolektiva.social avatar

    @breadandcircuses
The fossil fuel industry has been verifiably behind the campaign to shift the blame for pollution and climate change from large, industrial operations to individuals and the vast majority of people have continued to deeply internalize that lie.

[…] Janez Lenarcic, the head of humanitarian aid and crisis management at the European Commission, said that neither he nor - according to his knowledge - anybody else at the EU executive, or any other UNRWA donor had been presented with evidence by Israel.

[…] "Even if those allegations, at the end of the day, prove to be true, that doesn't mean that UNRWA is the perpetrator," he told journalists.
