It's only happened twice:

Andrew Johnson refused to attend the inauguration of Ulysses S. Grant.

Donald Trump refused to attend the inauguration of Joe Biden.

Media have been stonewalled asking "Will you recognize the winner if not Trump?" I would like to hear this question asked. "If Biden wins in a free and fair election will you graciously attend the inauguration?"

The current dodge is "you can't know if it will be fair, how can I answer that"

OK, but if it is fair. What then?

My concern is less threat he'll be duly elected and more that the GOP criminal conspiracy to undermine elections will again even further reduce the number of votes needed to win.

The GOP is preparing to lose the popular vote. They're planning on it. They don't think they can eek it out, so they're building contingencies in judicial appointments, election laws, ID laws, etc.

Trump isn't popular, but the GOP is one-minded about winning: "at all costs". And that's the real threat.

I decided to find out if any progress had been made on the science behind why some ants are attracted to electrical fields. After filtering out exterminators (it's so demoralizing to search for information on creatures you love and find nothing but people who know nothing about them boasting about how they will kill them all) I found what looked like a blog. But, who the heck is "James Brown"? Never heard of the dude. Maybe he could be my new friend if he likes ants enough to blog about them!

I'll go one further. All those national drives from India and similar areas to plant billions of trees? It's just free labor for capitalism. They're planting lumber forests, and it's done by volunteers.

Renewable yeah, but that's just lining billionaire pockets, folks who own thousands of acres for those projects. New growth trees are carbon neutral at best.

"I'd love to do a drug test beforehand"

This is Trump getting recent "Trump drug test" search results in his favor, because before this statement they would've been directing towards reports that he was allowed to skip that (very standard) part of his first probationary interview.

Clearly he doesn't want a drug test with his results out there.

    You better believe that he hasn't used that carry permit since he got Secret Service protection.

    There's no chance in hell that USSS would let him carry a gun personally while they're responsible for his safety. That's got nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with the office.

    itty53 ,
    @itty53@beige.party avatar

    @GottaLaff @CStamp @cvvhrn

    But a hired thug you call a bodyguard isn't the same as USSS detail assigned to protect you, not at all. The thug is your decision, you choose to hire them, they listen to you. POTUS cannot deny USSS detail. It's not an option. They don't even necessarily follow orders. They're the ones telling the POTUS what's going to happen.

    Trump himself said years ago he carried a gun for protection and explicitly said until he became president, at which point he stopped. Trump is a liar, yes, but with regards to that I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

    Jeff Yass owns 15% of ByteDance. He is also a major Trump donor. Yass probably started insisting he use TikTok because it's the only way Trump's actions are likely to see him any earnings. His election seems a lot less likely as of late, so it's not gonna come from the tax cuts.

    And she stole the Super Bowl show from Usher, same way she did this Jay Z song. To paraphrase her husband, "why are we talking about Usher? Did you see how beautiful she was in that dress?"

It’s partly a product of the Trump era, not because Trump is asking state Republicans to do these things, but because his comprehensive contempt for democracy in any form has encouraged them to stop pretending that they have any belief in the idea of majority rule."

    Huge point, thank you. Trump is not the root cause of the problem, he's just the most prominent symptom.

    They don't define words, they play with words despite their definitions. It's a subtle but important difference. That difference goes to the heart of why their brand of politics is just authoritarianism. The ultimate desire of the authoritarian is to dictate objectivity as desired, moment to moment.

    You could use the definitions they use against them and they'll just redefine it again and scold you for using an old definition.

    Pointedly asking what prevents Biden from appointing a handful of judges anyway.

    The number of judges on the court isn't mandated anywhere in the Constitution or by federal law. The number of justices is simply traditional. Rubio proposed an amendment to limit it to nine but good luck getting 2/3rds of Congress to agree to it. They haven't, not in the five years since it was proposed.

    The fact that Rubio and Co even proposed the change shows they're aware of that hole in their defense. When your enemy shows you their cards, you take advantage.

    Years ago I used to recommend a Fedi platform called Lemmy. However, in 2021 some very disturbing stuff about Lemmy's developers came out which totally changed my mind. Because of this, I did a thread to warn people about Lemmy and then never mentioned them again.

    Today a mod on this account's old server deleted the 2021 thread, without any explanation but apparently by mistake.

    If you're looking for the thread, it's on the Internet Archive:

    I have a working theory about social media I call "shapes". Reddit is a big part of that theory. Lemmy is intentionally Reddit-shaped, as Mastodon is intentionally Twitter-shaped. Get it? They're containers with shapes.

    These shapes actually influence the content they hold. They shape it, even, if you would. The hierarchical ranking of Reddit's shape encourages certain forms of communication and discourages others. Forum sliding and snowball effects are way too easy to game in that shape. Troll farms know how to do that real well. They know how Twitter shapes work too but they're not as easily gamed.

    It's not really a problem of moderators or moderation but everyone keeps trying to make it about that. In the case of Lemmy, sure, those guys aren't great anyway, but even if they were: that shape breeds toxic things all the same. It creates a dynamic of competition and peer pressure and dogpiling and us-vs-them.

    I wouldn't recommend any social media with a shape like Reddit's.
