We never made contact with the aliens. It was impossible. They were simply too far away. But everyone knew they were there, speculated about them. It wasn't a remarkable fact, so we thought the simulation it would be OK without them. We wanted to understand the history of Earth, after all. And it was an issue of processing power, memory. (The savings were huge.) And since we never made contact how much could it possibly change about their history?

It changed everything.

They've raised more than $175 million to influence upcoming elections in the US, and have more than $100 million of it still waiting to deploy.

I’m old enough to remember professors who said learning CS wasn’t a part of a foundational education any more than learning to use a lathe was a part of interior design. I don’t think this is common today, thankfully. But, what aspects of computer science should be integrated into existing subjects (a word processor in English to write a paper) and the degree to which it is an independent subject remain nebulous.

Thing is, understanding computers changes the way you think about everything.

@futurebird the act of providing explicit instruction is fundamental to everything but is most apparent in computer science. My first summer camp where we mostly played Doom on the lan, the instructor had a student tell someone else to walk around the classroom (we ultimately did logo writer).

Square cube law? Square shumb law!

Arthropods can get humongous. The main reason they don't is they are far too tempting targets for warm-blooded vertebrates.

But about that? Why couldn't an arthropod also be warm-blooded? Maybe some were.

And that thing you heard about "giant insects needed higher O2 levels" also questionable. Arthroplura was still around after the levels crashed... something else ended the golden age.

Is there a blog or person who explains science behind all of the claims speaker and earbud companies make about their software and hardware? What exactly is “3D sound” and “immersive sound?” I understand the basic idea of cancellation of a sound wave— detecting a periodic function, multiply it by -1 to zero it out. And the idea of setting the volume for different parts of a recording so they triangulate to different locations— but I want to know details. Any favorites?

The bald eagle could have easily gone extinct. But we did all sorts of "woke" things protecting it legally, ran conservation and study programs, banned DDT (that was good for other reasons too) and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.

Likewise pine forests could be dead from acid rain.

The ozone could have a huge hole.

We CAN take care of nature when we want to. And the successes have been worth it.

I feel like we forget this, you know?
