You wake up trapped as an average starting PC in the last you played. How screwed are you?

gcvsa ,
@gcvsa@mstdn.plus avatar

@thoughtpunks Pretty screwed, although things did eventually turn out OK. My PC was the daughter of poor beet farmers who secretly worshipped the beet goddess, when a foreign nation invaded and put the adults into re-education/work/concentration camps, and the children into orphanages/schools.

But later, she became a high DEX dual-wield Fighter/Champion and a key member of the resistance, and when the invaders were finally defeated, she and her family were reunited and made a minor noble house.

just called ai "the mediocrity machine" in a meeting and a tech bro is twitching so hard he can't even plug this into the mediocrity machine so it can tell him how to respond

gcvsa ,
@gcvsa@mstdn.plus avatar

@ElleGray I said the exact same thing yesterday, after watching the Apple WWDC keynote presentation. The ultimate effect of these "AI" tools will be the reduction of humanity to the least common denominator, an inherently reactionary drive toward conformity to mediocrity that the users of these tools will never even be able to perceive. LLMs and generative adversarial networks are really just elaborate Bayesian probability filters. Garbage in, garbage out.

@thoughtpunks I've been thinking a lot of Pointy Hat's latest video on travel in RPGs. He makes a lot of great points, and travel has always been important to me in games, particularly the logistics of travel.

gcvsa ,
@gcvsa@mstdn.plus avatar

@thoughtpunks I've very concerned with the logistics of travel, rather than trying to roleplay travel day by day. Like, I want it to make sense how a party gets from point A to point B with the amount of stuff a party would actually need to transport.

Wearing armor all day every day is not realistic, for one thing. Most travel would require a wagon/cart/horses, and luggage.

My main PC has what is basically a steamer trunk for her spare clothing, arms/armor, weapons, and personal items.

HEDGE WHORE. An itinerant harlot, who bilks the bagnios and bawdy-houses, by disposing of her favours on the wayside, under a hedge; a low beggarly prostitute.

The two things that I personally feel have always been terrible about the design of are the class-based character development system and the Vancian magic system.

These systems irrationally limit the choices players can make in designing and developing their PCs, and TSR/WotC/Hasbro has missed so many opportunities to do away with these systems over the past 50 years.

But, they can be fixed, within the existing framework of . (more)

A few years ago, I finally developed a good Spell Points system to replace the spell slot system of D&D, but for some reason, it never struck me until the middle of last night that the way to fix the class system of D&D is Feats.

By simply converting all class-based mechanics to Feats, D&D could finally be freed of these irrational limitations.

I would have to rework my Spell Points system to fit a Feats-based D&D, but that's simply a matter of juggling a few numbers.

gcvsa OP ,
@gcvsa@mstdn.plus avatar

With my SP system, there's no longer any "spell preparation" or "spell slots". The caster has a certain number of SP based on their caster level, and can cast any spell they know any number of times, provided their have SP remaining, and can, if they wish, exchange HP for SP, once they run out of SP, even unto death.

Once a spell is learned, it is learned permanently, and is not "forgotten" after casting.

On April 15, Chicago police aggressively prevented marchers during the worldwide A15 day of action. Organizers say the repression was a message from the city ahead of the upcoming Democratic National Convention in August.

What's the worst or other game you played that you still love and would maybe even play again? What's so bad about it? Why do you love it anyway? We all have our broken favorites. Tell us all about yours!

gcvsa ,
@gcvsa@mstdn.plus avatar

@thoughtpunks Dungeons & Dragons, without even having to think twice or long about it. D&D is an awful system, but I will still play it, if that is what my friends want to play, because a sucky game is better than no game, at all.

I loathe the limiting class-based PC development system, the terrible Vancian magic system, the baked-in racism, the mandatory religionism, and the illogical worldbuilding. Almost nothing in D&D makes any kind of rational sense.

designers, if you are using class-based PC development, why? Why artificially limit player choices? I believe skills-based PC development is much superior.

"Aren't there many unhappy couples, if cross species reproduction isn't very common?"

This question was posed tonight in my session. While I'm open to the concept in my homebrew, looking at for example base where we got Half-Orcs, Half-Elves and Half...-lings(?), I found the question very interesting and wanted to ask the wider community.

How do you fine folk handle to topic?

@Imperor @dndhomebrew @dnd @DnD @askgamemasters @worldbuilding @ttrpgs I can only really say that for my part, in my setting of Enrathe, humans, "orcs", "elves", and "dwarves" are actually all the same species who diversified long ago into different cultures, and "halflings" don't exist.

If you want to keep your Mastodon account extra secure, you might want to activate "Two Factor Authentication" also known as "2FA". When you have 2FA switched on, it means only you can access your account even if someone finds out or guesses your password.

There's a complete guide to using 2FA on Mastodon at:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/using-two-factor-authentication-2fa-on-mastodon/

The guide also answers common questions about how 2FA works.

gcvsa ,
@gcvsa@mstdn.plus avatar

@FediTips The trouble with 2FA is that it’s not workable for accounts that more than one person needs to access.
