Just like corporate donations are "speech". Some Citizens United logic here.

YSK : Dark patterns among large companies are becoming more mainstream ( youtu.be )

While it is no secret that exploitative practices are interlaced with capitalistic tendencies, the practices are becoming intolerable. Signing up to pay usually takes only two clicks that are prominently visible whereas cancelation options are hidden away in deep settings requiring multiple clicks. Pricing often feel arbitrary...

But at a certain point, it's still a cop out. And part of the trick. If you drown anyone in enough bullshit, you can't expect it to all get called out -- but that doesn't mean it's not all bullshit. It is divide and conquer in another form.

This, and as far as I can tell, the only way to avoid being called a RINO is to completely eschew any kind of critical thinking and absolutely toe the party line regardless of how asinine or nonsensical.

This result is predictable for a lot of different things that started as products and seem to be ending up as services.

Microsoft wants Windows to be a subscription service with the associated perks to the company (namely, targeted ads, and also extreme control over anything the system does, including this ad scheme), and so an increased number of people seek a more traditional OS.

The movie industry pushes streaming down everyone's throat as a highly fragmented market where media ownership no longer exists; thus an increased number of people start to return to physical media.

Car companies push to paywall features of their cars behind subscription services. An increased number of people seek used cars which have no such paywalls.

The patterns are clear, in my view, but the C-suite is always driven by a naïve lust for ever-increasing profit.

I've got an Apple II+ that was doing weird shit. Turns out after a lot of sleuthing that it was a single bad DRAM chip, which due to the way that system handles RAM would show up as single unpredictable bits in various locations.

NASA, seek me out if y'all get stuck.

I not only remember the cornucopia one, but I thought this was the reason I learned the word cornucopia when I was a kid. Most Mandela effect stuff is kind of silly to me, but this one just freaks me out.

Such a weird gatekeepy headline. I'd argue it's virtually anyone born after 1980.

The idea that younger people just need "work experience" is a vestige of a bygone world, when just having that little bit of experience would make you qualified for the job -- THE job -- that you would continue to do forever, because companies paid for loyalty with loyalty. That isn't how the world works now and every job, entry level, dead end, or otherwise, is the job that you might need to do forever. That's why a living wage is more important now than perhaps it was in previous years.

Also why in the hell is a giant corporation like Amazon, with pockets do deep they exceed the GDP of many countries, getting a loan from the federal government. Make it make sense.

I'm not OP, but I can share what I found myself doing these kits. Angles on manipulated pieces are extremely important. You really need good leverage with some pliers that also have very, very small ends.

Do you get as many filtered to spam? I think a lot of it comes down to phone number leaks, not spam filtering (and also spam filtering on SMS is dicey, because a false positive can be very costly).

The housing crisis won't end until (among other things) corporations cannot freely own limitless numbers of single family homes. We will see perpetual renting because it's effectively passive income for the corporations, and they have deeper pockets than 99.9% of individuals.

As companies own more and more, but don't sell, supply dwindles, and the bubble never bursts.

Unless the Electoral College magically goes away, this will be a rough election for a majority of Americans. Lots of long-standing issues are coming to a head with the realization that we've already been fascist for a while.

Streaming.

It's the new cable, in that it sells to customers based on intentional market fragmentation. It's actually a worse, because anything you "buy" on a streaming platform is actually just leased.

Most of their entire business model relies on collecting data hand over fist, constantly. Hell, even actively not using their products doesn't even make you safe.

How has America retired as World Policeman? One issue doesn't decide that. There's a lot of debate in the US currently about the amount of resources we spend outside the country on non-US citizens vs. what we do for our own.

I'm glad to see a company speaking out the other way (even though I don't really care about Yelp).

The writing is on the wall in my view. A company not being remote-first is a company bogged down by middle management, real estate obligations, and an oblivious c-suite.

This is the right approach, but also want to mention, some sites actively block VPN IPs. Sometimes I see 403s which don't persist if I switch servers.

In a perfect world where votes translated into policy changes, yes.

I'm not sure we should expect new or enlightened views on this issue. Everything seems pretty clear from a facts standpoint.

circuitfarmer ,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I think this is the right answer. It's a bit shocking that none exist, but that doesn't mean it's untrue. Some may have existed but don't anymore (like the Vermont example in another reply).

The health insurance racket in the US is strong -- probably the strongest in the world -- and they have to maintain constantly expand their profits.

My sentiments exactly. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, as annoying as they can be. Now that I'm not using reddit I wish them the best of luck wreaking havoc.

Biden planning to hit food ‘shrinkflation,’ corporate greed in SOTU ( www.politico.com )

President Joe Biden is weighing how hard to hammer big food companies over painfully high grocery prices in his upcoming State of the Union Address. But some some aides remain wary of focusing too much on food inflation, given how little power the president has to singlehandedly force down prices....

circuitfarmer ,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.world avatar

That's faulty logic. We know that mergers tend to lead to higher prices. We also know that there's already an issue with artificial inflation (=companies colluding to raise prices), as well as actual inflation.

Ultimately it's just simple addition if/when the merger goes through. It will exacerbate the existing issue.

As a lifelong democrat, I find this to be very dangerous rhetoric. It sounds tonedeaf. Regardless of the candidate, being critical of politicians is a cornerstone of democracy.

I understand it's important to be a united front, but the need to seemingly bring dissenting voices into line is not a good way to do it. We cannot force people to say we have a perfect candidate for the sake of avoiding discussion.

Edit: a word

circuitfarmer ,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.world avatar

Win what? Ultimately no one wins if we can't discuss areas for improvement even within one's own party.

circuitfarmer ,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, that's one of my fears with this rhetoric. We keep reducing issues to bifurcations which is incredibly dangerous.

circuitfarmer , (edited )
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.world avatar

Right, but winning an election where your own party already required you to shut up about anything where you disagree -- doesn't seem like a win?

I think there's this idea that if we keep the Dems in power, then we'll hit a point where we can return to discussion and fix issues within the party. But that's a false idea. There will always be an opponent, and the idea that we should all fall in line just to avoid fascism is, well, misguided at best -- because it's also fascism. We're already setting a precedent within the party to avoid dissidence. That's wild.

circuitfarmer ,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I totally agree everyone needs to vote for Biden based on how the system currently works. But what I disagree with is the insinuation that anyone disagreeing with Biden needs a MAGA hat. That's tonedeaf and bad for the party.

Ford rethinks EV strategy, is working on a smaller, cheaper EV platform ( arstechnica.com )

For the last two years, a small "skunkworks" at the Ford Motor Company has been working on a low-cost electric vehicle platform, according to Ford CEO Jim Farley. Farley revealed the existence of this new platform during the automaker's quarterly financial results call with investors on Tuesday evening. The company is rethinking...

I'm hanging on to a 20-year-old compact for dear life because I really cannot replace it. Everything is comparatively giant and very expensive. Plus it all sucks. I don't want a subscription car. And please give me real buttons.

just the idea that it's my job to sell myself to these sorts of business goons who ENJOY seeing people desperate and on edge is so sick. i have nothing to sell, i am not a commodity, i am a human being.

This hit me hard. I'm in a similar boat. All I can say is do your damndest to stay positive friend. It's a fucked up game that only some are forced to play.

Also, the elephant in the remains in the room: discussing piracy is not piracy.

circuitfarmer ,
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.world avatar

If there is any single issue that stifles actual discussion or debate in US politics, it is Whataboutism. There will always be some other issue to distract from what's at hand. BLM + "but all lives matter!" = whataboutism. Biden eliminates some student debt + "but Israel" = whataboutism. It is one of the best ways to keep the pot stirring without allowing anyone to taste the soup.
