@susurros@palestine Horrific. This is what my government that I voted for & my tax dollars (even if involuntarily used) has supported. Every American has the blood of these victims on our hands. I’ve never been more disappointed at my government than I am at this moment, and that is sadly saying a lot considering the crimes of my government’s foreign policy in over six decades of life. We have enabled this evil, & it will not stop until we the people demand it to end.
@StonerMetal@bookstodon Great choice. Every progressive owes in part our perspective, at least on economics, to Karl Marx and Das Kapital. Took me over two years to trudge through all three volumes, but it was worth it. The observations are as true today as they were when it was first published. Of course, the Communist Manifesto needs to make an appearance at some point. 😀
@Nonilex Knowing the current SCOTUS, I have zero faith they will side with allowing government agencies the discretion to regulate by rule-setting from within. Fifty years ago, this wouldn’t be a problem. Congress could legislate. In 2024, Congress can barely function, let alone take on voting and legislating on regulations like these. We shall see.
Prior to 1982, the SEC considered stock buybacks to be illegal stock manipulation. But under President Reagan, stock buybacks were made legal. Now, instead of investing profits into people, big corporations use them to line the pockets of wealthy shareholders. They're a scam.
@rbreich Consider all the politicians who are investors’ themselves. It’s not going to change until we banish things outright (first for the policy makers & then the execs).
@luckytran I’m all for wearing a mask to protect identification. I don’t really care what the other side thinks. They want us all imprisoned or worse. Wear a mask and annoy them even further!
“Chief Justice John #Roberts on Thursday declined an invitation to meet with Democratic senators to talk about Supreme Court ethics and the controversy over flags that flew outside homes owned by Justice Samuel #Alito.” #SCOTUS
@molly0xfff Electronic Gestapo. This is evil. Thank goodness I'm on Linux. People need to leave that operating system as soon as reasonably possible (unless your work requires you to use it).
@breadandcircuses "Capitalism is not, as its defenders insist, a system designed to distribute wealth, but one designed to capture and concentrate it. "
@w7voa Thank you and thank the Governor for us! I can’t imagine how anyone would treat a dog in this fashion. There’s just a heartlessness to it all. I’m glad someone is calling this out.
Clarence Thomas ruled in favor of Citizens United. Harlan Crow and his family's political contributions then went up 862%. Then we later find out Thomas let Crow take him on lavish trips, buy his mom's house, and help fund his wife's conservative nonprofit. See how this works?
@Rasta Mind of the right: Not old enough to decide what you are (since you cannot be trusted!), but still old enough to work full-time jobs and skip having an education.
Humanity must escape Capitalism. Capitalism epitomizes a system rife with exploitation and inequality. Capitalism creates economic disparities, where a privileged few amass wealth and control resources at the expense of the marginalized many. Capitalism has an inherent tendency to commodify human labor, creating alienation and reducing individuals to mere cogs in the profit-driven machinery. In essence, Capitalism is antithetical to human progress and freedom.
@tomclearwood@Radical_EgoCom Never? If we (as humans) have existed for at least 50,000 years, and capitalism is (what?) at most a few hundred years old, you're going to have a hard time explaining the other 99.4% of our existence. Capitalism, like slavery, is a system, one that represents the interests of the rulers and owners of that society, not all of humanity.
"A Mississippi slaughterhouse that supplies chicken to Chick-fil-A is directly to blame for the death of a 16-year-old worker who was sucked into equipment in July and killed within minutes."
I work with teens every day and can't get this story out of my mind. Despite this the push to weaken labor regulations continues.
This is where all those "right to work" for teens laws lead.
@futurebird I worked jobs at that age. I was a newspaper delivery person in my youth. But no kid, no kid should be anywhere near machinery like that. Really, I hate the idea of kids working at all these days. They should all be in school, unless it's some volunteer/community event.
@pluralistic Perverse. I just expect at any moment one of these politicians put forward a bill to bring back slavery and call it a jobs program. This country is filled with some of the most sociopathic people in elected office.
