Rough plans at the beginning of the year, like "1 week to go to this place in July-August timeframe" so I can plan time away from work accordingly.

6+ months out for international travel for best deals on airfare.

Day of for weekend trips sometimes. Or tacking on a day or two to the end of a work trip.

Years out for sporting events. Like the 2031 rugby world cup will be hosted by the US and I plan to go to quite a few games, plans will develop as cities are picked and pool play schedules made.

I never want to go back to not having a standing desk. Next purchase was a mat bc my feet did bark a bit after a full day standing but my hips and back feel so much better.

I've worked physical jobs before, thanks. I still want to stand more now with my current mostly-at-a-desk job, thus I chose a standing desk.

Exercise your own choice and get whatever desk you want.

I go for a walk alone while listening to music, usually instrumental EDM or similar, no lyrics to think about.

Options for non-smart TV in UK 2024?

I am considering replacing my old 50" 1080p TV which I use with (external) Chromecast and Roku. I would like a 4K display 60" or greater but I really, really don't want any smart features. I am aware that I could purchase a commercial display to achieve this and that's my fallback option. Can anyone here make any useful...

I'm in the US, not sure these are available in the UK, but the other two brands I found with "dumb" tvs the last time I looked in 2021-2022ish, were supersonic and caixun.

How people manage to play and chat online with random people?

This may sound dumb for some of you but I just can't play online, or at least I can't play anything with chat or a very social aspect. That's why I only play tekken on my xbox since that doesn't require socialisation but I have so many games and I feel half of them are worthless now that I finished the campaigns because I don't...

Vanth ,

You answered your own question. Lots of the social aspect is on discord and you're not willing to use discord. That's it.

I took care of younger siblings, I got my taste of changing diapers, feeding, early years educating, schedule management, being "on" 24/7 for emergencies. No thank you. For me personally, being a mom with the typical gendered expectations would be a pile of hot trash with absolutely no upside.

New reading spots

I live alone and read books. I mostly read them at home but I'd like to go out and read. The thing is I have really bad adhd so it involves not just my Kindle but I also listen to the audiobook at the same time or I can't stay focused on the book. I just listen to it on my phone with earbuds so it's hopefully not a huge deal but...

Vanth ,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

Oh, interesting. I switched from books/ebooks to audiobooks so I could do other things at the same time, I never thought to combine them.

I listen to audiobooks while walking, if you were open to dropping the reading part. Parks, my neighborhood, while shopping, all while listening to books.

As for sitting down a reading/listening at the same time, I would suggest breweries to mix up the coffee shops, especially earlier in the afternoon or early evening before drinking crowds show up. Parks again.

And as a former barista and bartender, so long as you buy at least one drink, don't dirty your area unnecessarily, and clear out if the place starts getting busy with people waiting for tables, you're fine. You are probably the most low-maintenance customer possible. Heck, I was always happy when my fellow introverts felt comfortable in my service and respected them by not engaging in small talk 😁.

I'll contain my skepticism until I see what these opt-in messages look like. Some of the Bing Chat and CoPilot and connecting to a MS account was designed to make people think it was required, and came up repeatedly after being dismissed. "Dark Patterns" to use a term du jour.

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?

My gf and I have had discussions about teaching morals to kids. In that vein, I asked myself, would I teach piracy to my kids? Yes, it’s technically illegal and carries inherent risks. But so does teenage sex carry the risks of teenage pregnancy, and so we have an obligation to children to teach them how to practice safe sex....

My friend's dad taught me about it in middle school. Cracked open my perception to a much larger online world than I otherwise would have accessed.

No plans to have kids, but I would as a part of a digital education that would include both the technical and political.

This seems odd for Netflix. They invest in content based on how many new subscribers will be pulled in; they will cancel a show with an established following if it's not attracting enough new subscribers.

What do they think that 6th Rebel Moon movie will be if they are expecting it to attract even a dozen new subscribers at that point?

I don't remember all the signs from Revelations, but I'm pretty sure one of them is seven trumpets playing as the sky gets their fuckery on. We obviously needed more brass bands playing. I think these guys could bring on the end times next eclipse.

The next step is having to wait for the ad to complete before the gas will pump. "Premium" gas station membership for a fee will provide an ad-free experience, for now, but eventually it will come with ads too.

Why pirate? Language learning resources are one of the easiest things to find, especially since you're not looking for anything specific.

Apps, library books, podcasts, TV shows, music, websites, tons available from free to paid.

I have been liking the Clozemaster app lately.

‘IRL Fakes:’ Where People Pay for AI-Generated Porn of Normal People ( www.404media.co )

A Telegram user who advertises their services on Twitter will create an AI-generated pornographic image of anyone in the world for as little as $10 if users send them pictures of that person. Like many other Telegram communities and users producing nonconsensual AI-generated sexual images, this user creates fake nude images of...

Vanth ,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

How are the perpetrators victims?

I could see an argument for someone in need of money making AI generated porn of themselves. Like, don't judge sex workers, they're just trying to make money. But taking someone else's image without their consent is more akin to Tate coercing his "girlfriends" into doing cam work and taking all the money and ensuring they can't escape. He's not a victim nor a sex worker, he's a criminal.

Boeing moved 787 assembly out of Everett to just their Charleston site to avoid unions. Yes, they treat their assemblers like interchangeable cogs, especially when there are no unions to counteract some of their bad abti-labor decisions. Don't expect Boeing to get any better with the replacement of 3-4 leaders.

the sole supplier of the quartz required to make the crucibles needed to refine silicon wafers. There are no alternative sources known.

The bit that supports the headline that totally does look click-baity and dramatic.

Mollick provides an excerpt from Conway's Material World, which discusses the probable "end of computer chip manufacture as we know it," should something untoward happen at Spruce Pine or in the skies above

Maybe Mollick is click-baity, but the article seems to be quoting directly and not creating the click-bait themselves.

Oppenheimer was 3 hours long. We watched it from home over three nights with plenty of food, booze, pee breaks, etc. I could pause and rewind observe a visual effect again or rehear a piece of dialogue. Watching from home is a superior experience most of the time.

The exception is when socializing is part of the experience. Like watching Rocky Horror or going to an outdoor screening where people are milling about between picnic blankets chatting and sharing food or theaters that have an established etiquette of talking and shouting more than you would find in other theaters, typically associated with black neighborhoods but not always. Not your generic AMC theaters.

Once again, pretty impressed by the quality of journalism coming from a late night talk show. There was plenty established history to talk about without speculating wildly about the door plug failure still under investigation; I wish traditional journalists were that responsible.

Also, "quality escape" means something escaped out the door that did not conform to engineering drawings / specifications / instructions. Meaning this wasn't a design issue like the 737 Max 8 MCAS system leading to the two crashes, it was a mistake made (or series of mistakes) made in planning and/or execution of production work.

Only five of the legacy movie companies still operate as traditional studios and one of those, Paramount, is up for sale.

Oh, noooooo. I wonder what A24 is up to? Oh yeah, putting out movies that compete with the big 5's while also working with the union to where they didn't have to shut down last year. Funny how that works.

Interesting. Do you think it's about changing appearance or exerting control or other?

I rearrange furniture when I need to get out of a rut. I think it's a combo of physical exertion and controlling my environment. My office has had many layouts over the years.

All the precautions I already take being a woman, but dial them up to 11 and mentally prepare myself for the wave of hate aimed at people who believe women are human beings worthy of rights and autonomy. E.g., hoard birth control, stop using period tracking apps, continue using Signal or look for something even better for encrypted messaging, maybe stop sleeping with fertile men altogether.

Maintain my current position that isolationism does not serve the US well and that the genocide in Gaza by the Israeli government is bad. Also maintain my feelings of uselessness at being unable to affect any amount of change on the above.

Adjust investment strategy of my 401k. There's not much in there, I want it to count for as much as possible.

Go through a phase of low/no contact with certain family members. I get that a normal presidency might come with a bit of good-natured gloating from the family members backing the winning candidate. I don't want to sit through a repeat of my aunt telling her gay nephew to his face the things Trump is going to do to fix his perversions. If I recall, there was some tie to the Michelle Obama healthy school lunches initiatives now correlating to my cousin being gay because of course she would cling to that sort of absurdity. "The school pizza they were already on the normal menu is now counting as a serving of vegetables because of the tomato-based sauce. Poor Billy, that acknowledgment of vegetables turned him gay".

I am actually surprised I haven't seen more memes playing on that.

I am a woman, and therefore speak with authority for All Womankind (jk). In reality, I have no studies but some thoughts pulled together from gender differences and potential differences in experiences.

Tech stuff is often male dominated, dig into less mainstream stuff on forums with patchwork moderation and some pockets get really unfriendly to women really quickly. Lemmy is about as deep as I go while still openly saying I'm a woman. Even here, I have Lemmy alts from which I don't mention my gender so I can ask questions as an "assumed male by default" user.

I think one could also frame it in terms of risk tolerance. Testosterone levels affect men's emotions and ability to think logically (there are plenty of studies on this). For example, they aren't worse drivers than women but take bigger risks that put them in more dangerous situations with more damaging outcomes because high testosterone can literally make them impulsive and illogical. Any time I see a gender disparity in crime in particular, I wonder about correlation to testosterone levels.

I can't speak to reddit as a whole, but the one reddit sub I used to mod certainly got worse. The mod team there used to try to keep the outright assholery to a minimum, but we were all mobile users and it became nearly impossible to mod effectively from a phone. So I quit and I'm not sure any of the others stuck around to actively mod it. It sure doesn't look like it from the recent posts and comments. All the core, frequent sub members that made the sub what it was have also gone silent. Other than the sub name, it's not the same community anymore.
