motorcycles should 100% be in the zone of practicality, especially with modern sleek electric ones.

skateboards should be the bridge between practical and recreational, provided you have sensible infrastructure and short distances they have distinct benefits.

skis and sleds just need snow to make sense

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

sure but that applies to everything, if you want to be safe then the only time you should ever be on a road is inside a bus.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it annoys me to no end how motorcycles and mopeds are viewed as dangerous, when every single time you hear about people being hurt on them it's because they're fucking idiots who tried to do a backflip infront of a semitruck

calling it a spice feels generous, it's yellow food colouring powder.

sure technically it affects flavour but so does eating out of a different bowl..

which is actually good, because otherwise they could convict you for the pettiest shit or simply invent a law to convict you over, thus barring you from presidency when you haven't done anything that people dislike.

the problem now is that there's a large group of people who don't consider "being convicted of fraud" as a reason to stop voting for trump, and in fact will mos likely NEVER find any reason to stop voting for him or whoever the republicans put forward.

TIL in the Carboniferous Period, no fungus existed to decompose trees. They just grew on top of each other up and up.

The weight of the trees was so great that the ones on the bottom got squished and became coal. That’s where coal is from. Bonus fact: the whole time this was happening, sharks were hunting in the oceans. Sharks are older than trees and fungus!

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

you'd think so, but sharks were in fact the first lifeform to be summoned from the astral planes, everything else evolved from a single shark cell that had the right mutations to survive (all sharks simply died within minutes until plants had created enough oxygen for them to breathe, at which point they died within days until the evolution of other animals)

cordyceps are to fungi what barnacles are to arthropods, horrifying twisted versions of the clade

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

you have seen how they look on the inside, yes? They bring about existential dread with how they've been twisted from the arthropod baseline, they're like the creatures in Man After Man.

vegan eugenics

Swedneck ,

good, the class struggle needs more awareness since it affects everyone.

wanting people to ignore the class struggle makes you something called "a massive asshat" and strongly implicates you as someone who benefits from the status quo.

can we maybe not propagate misinformation? it was perfectly normal for hunter-gatherers to reach at least 50 years old, and if you think about it for a bit it makes sense that the age where we start to fall apart is about the oldest that people got to in the past, which is around 50-60 yrs.

the average lifespan in the past was something like 35, but that's because tons of people died early on, which remained true up until the invention of modern medicine which was like 100 years ago and doesn't really have anything to do with your diet.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

this is misleading, the article starts by saying that life expectancy was 30-35 but then goes on to say that this is the average lifespan, which includes the fact that most people died in childhood.

When accounting for that, the average lifespan becomes at least 50 years old.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

we sort of can, it's called eating a better diet.

stop feeding the bacteria tons of sugar, start eating more chewy things that effectively brush your teeth as you eat them, and maybe even start chewing stuff like stalks of grass or twigs, that's how a lot of people keep their teeth clean even today.

Local Mom’s Wine Club Cleverly Disguised as a Book Club, Fools No One But Themselves ( lemmy.world )

In a quiet suburban neighborhood where minivans outnumber streetlights, a group of women have been ingeniously disguising their love of wine as a book club. While their intentions may be transparent to everyone else, these winos insist that their guise is a stroke of genius. “It’s a sophisticated literary club that explores...

MLK junior literally refers to himself and other black people as "The Negro" repeatedly in his "I have a dream" speech, if you still want to imagine that it was a slur then you're simply deluded.

This stuff is wild, here in the nordics we call chocolate balls rolled in pearl sugar "N- balls" and of course a certain subset of people love to go "but you can't say that anymore".

yeah no shit einstein, it's a slur

fwiw you don't have to be a revolutionary, just supporting others (who might be revolutionaries) is great.

if nothing else, things become a lot easier to bear when you engage in mutual aid and building a local community.

here in sweden most cities have some amount of municipal housing, where you can get a family-sized apartment for like $1200 equivalent, or a studio apartment for $300-400

it's almost like socialism works, and it works so fucking well that they have to legally restrict the municipal housing from being more than like 17% of the housing supply lest it nuke all private landlords from orbit

having been showered with shorts from that one powerplant engineer who starts with "you want to see something cool?", it's very clear that if my teachers had casually cursed and joked about "shafts" and shit my attendance would have been much improved.

There's something about someone who obviously knows what they're doing swearing with passion about their subject that makes it so much easier to understand.

death sentence seems a bit excessive, surely they can climb? Yeah putting them on the ground probably makes it much more likely they'll get nabbed by a predator before they get up a tree, but it feels like saying "putting a human in a tree is a death sentence"

am i the only one who doesn't find most hollywood women particularly appealing? like yeah scarlet isn't ugly or anything, but she looks a bit weird and stiff and i get the distinct impression that everyone says these women are attractive just because they have smooth skin and look rich..

like, a lot of the women i see just randomly on the street irl are WAY more attractive than those in hollywood

also like, food insecurity is ABSOLUTELY a thing in america, just because store shelves are full of food doesn't mean people can actually afford it.

That fact, in and of itself, should really be enough to discredit capitalism. It's so profoundly horrifying that we merrily deny people basic survival needs just because they can't afford it.

Swedneck ,

would work if they were upfront about the cars being shit and charged effectively scrap value for them

like people putting up listings for broken devices going cheaply, with the target audience being people who want to repair them or use them for parts

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

not a thing i've ever heard of in sweden, either apartments are just expensive or you need to sign up for a waiting list and maintain your spot for like 7 years until you have the queue points needed for the apartment you want to rent

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

the fact that most of the rent goes to pure landlord profit becomes obvious with municipal housing here in sweden, where we basically only pay for maintenance.

suddenly the rent is so cheap that the americans i've told it to just wanted to cry, 400€/month for a small apartment that's plenty big enough for a single person, and full on family apartments can be had for as low as 600€/month if you look around for a while.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

lie through your teeth, the landlord won't hesitate to blatantly lie so neither should you.

oh no no mr landlord sir, this isn't my dad, this is my "previous landlord"!

@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it's usually not that extreme, but that's how it is in the large cities.

More normal for an average city is probably like 3 years waiting, you're expected to sign up before you have any intentions of moving out from your parents.

i mean i wouldn't be opposed to a strong man leader, provided they're an absolute saint and ceaselessly preach about being good to one another and spends shitloads of time practising what they preach.

Humans do naturally gravitate towards having leaders, however it's important that everyone keeps in mind that leaders get their power because people trust them, and if they violate that trust they shouldn't keep the power.
Being a leader shouldn't really be a position of power, it should be a position of responsibility and scrutiny.

just print something like a QR code in absurd resolution and read it in a document scanner, a single sheet of A4 should be able to fit quite a lot of data.

Swedneck ,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

also QR codes have EXTREME data redundancy, you can cover like half of a QR code and it'll still work.

In our scenario we don't need much redundancy, since the paper will be in controlled conditions and shouldn't degrade, and we'll make damn sure to scan the entire thing without crap obscuring it.

We also don't need all the tracking features, all we need is a marking in one corner so we know what way to put it into the scanner.

All this taken together should result in a data density that is actually realistically useful with just one side of a single A4 sheet.

Imagine storing a digital photo on a piece of paper, and needing to scan it to reproduce the photo.. someone needs to do this!
