Ritchie Torres, you are a congressman and must set a better example. Do not tell Jewish people who is, and isn't being Jewish correctly. Just don't.

That was an ugly thing to say. Everyone noticed.

I'm very tired and do not want to run around trying to find a new congressperson in two years, OK?

@RitchieTorres

Oggie ,

@futurebird I am hoping I am just tired and this wasn't, in fact, a no true Scotsman situation.

See? This is why I'm a so called "climate doomer."

  1. Because fixing the climate requires reducing anti-Black racism, and letting Black folk in the US vote, but the US just does not want to do that. There is no viable path to making progress on climate change without reducing anti-Black racism. None.

  2. Because so many people will see headlines like this, and not even recognize the problem with it. China is doing the right thing! But we frame that as a negative.

https://www.dw.com/en/from-solar-to-evs-how-china-is-overproducing-green-tech/a-68782157

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@mekkaokereke The framing in the headline is something. 'overproducing' makes it seem like there is a set amount that should be created, and more than that is inherently 'too much', because the concept of more than the minimum is crazy.

It's priming people to certain mindsets right from the get go, via implication that there is an absolute set appropriate amount of 'green stuff's to worry about.

It was always exciting and important when as a child I’d pepper some adult with questions and (at last) they would say “you know what? I don’t know. Let’s ask this other person or let’s look it up!”

LLMs are like the kind of adult who just makes up some plausible BS rather than say “I don’t know” those kinds of adults didn’t really think my questions mattered they didn’t think I’d remember or notice they’d lied to me. I always noticed. I think these systems trigger me because of it LMAO.

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@futurebird
I actually wonder how much this is going to normalize, on a social level, 'just giving an answer' instead of 'Huh, I don't know'.

Look, I'm not particularly young, and more and more as I get older the thing that strikes me about really smart people is they are the ones who say 'I don't know that term/phrase/meaning, can you explain it?' and then listen attentively.

It seems impressive to contextually glean, sure...when you're young. But everyone should admit gaps, and ask more.

We have been leveling cities, torturing, raping, killing, plundering and abducting children for so long, my army seriously needs a break, before all those western weapons arrive, and we lose the war.

Therefore, I think western countries should give us a breather, so I can replenish my troops and get back to full blown genocide in about 6-12 months.

From Russia with love ♥️

I still hear people arguing that prosecuting a former president sets a “dangerous precedent.”

The truly dangerous precedent would be to establish that presidents are above the law.

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@rbreich The interesting thing to me about this, is that was the exact argument to not do anything to Nixon. Because that would set a dangerous precedent and then all our presidents would be constantly in legal battles.

That didn't really happen, and in fact, if we'd actually done more that direction we probably wouldn't be in so much trouble now with Trump. So let's try that version for a bit!

futurebird , to random
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

Trump is upset he may miss his son's graduation because he's on trial.

Yeah, we do treat people in the criminal justice system harshly. People you have never thought about, people who have kids, and graduations, and moments missed forever.

But it's different now. He cries. It's happening to ME. To Me!

Nothing, no one, exists beyond the tip of some people's noses. They cannot see pain unless they feel it. Cannot recognize suffering unless it's their own.

What a stunted perspective.

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@futurebird This might be bad/petty of me, but I feel like he would not even be going to that graduation if it wasn't a political upside for whatever reason.

futurebird , to random
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

OK. This is obvious but it just clicked for me. The reason you accuse the other side of doing what you are really doing is because in the end someone did it and you are hoping some people will forget who.

*someone stole an election
*someone mishandled classified documents
*someone nearly got impeached
*someone abused campaign funds cover up adultery

Last one is harder... but they'll get there.

(You know they are looking for ANYTHING. Maybe Joe has one of those 50s pinups in the garage.)

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@futurebird
I've always felt it was because if you accuse someone else of doing something, and they immedately accuse you back of the same thing, it's inherently weakened, and looks childish.

But they're really overplayed that, and it feels like that particular 'defense' has run it's course, so now it's let's try to weaken the arguments and throw up a lot of chaff.

I keep seeing these discussions in left circles about how terrible social media is. It angers & frustrates me that Mastodon & the Fediverse don't even merit a mention.

"The Majority Report" goes as far as dissing Threads but never mentions the fedi.

There are only 170 comments. Why not leave a comment asking why "the left" keeps complaining (rightly) about corporate social media but ignoring the alternative?

I genuinely think it's sunk cost fallacy as applied to emotional labor.

I have made space on my head, and constructed a model of this person. Adjusting that model takes energy and effort. Instead, I will deny any need to change it, period. After all, I am a good person, and if I saw him as a good person, I am probably right, and new evidence to the contrary is probably wrong, or I wouldn't have constructed this mental image!

Enough with the gaslighting!

The criminal rapist insurrectionist is calling for a bloodbath if he's not elected.

Everyone knows what he said and what he meant. This is horrific and should be disqualifying. Full stop.

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@mastodonmigration Does anyone actually think that he won't call for bloodbath in 9 months?.

If he loses, yes, but also if he wins. Dies anyone actually think, at this point, based on his actions and history, that he won't do that?

I honestly am having problems modeling that. Once he does that's does anyone think that people won't do it?

I think most people would object to forcing women to wear skirts. Beating up girls who do unladylike things like dancing or calculus. Many can even see how silly it is to tease a boy for enjoying painting more than sports.

Most* get this.

What I don't understand is how it isn't obvious that transphobia is the exact same impulse.

There is no "reasonable" amount of transphobia you can tolerate without also supporting rigid harmful gender norms in general. 1/

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@futurebird
By wearing pink, you have tied this hospital's hands, we cannot treat this medical condition.

That's not really a big step from what we're talking about, honestly.

And yes, it..bothers me more than I have commonly said that cis women being attacked (again, because this has already been happening) is very possibly the only thing that makes this particular ball of hatred unravel, but I don't know another solution, other than 'wait it out'.

parismarx , to random

.@taylorlorenz did a great job in this interview. She gave Raichik ample room to hang herself and show how poorly she grasps issues she constantly posts about. Criticism that Lorenz gave someone with millions of followers a “platform” is ridiculous imo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL-40gDBRx0

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@parismarx
So you genuinely feel that this did any harm to Raichik in any sense? Do you think it weakened her support among her fans in any way? Do you feel anyone saw this and decided to step back?

Conversely, do you think people who are attempting to sell her as a source for things might have gained a new light to shade her as, to make her seem reasonable?

I just don't see the value.

luckytran , to random

I can't stress enough how downplaying COVID has emboldened the far right.

When you tell people "you do you" or say that schools don't need public health protections, you shift the Overton window, making it easier for anti-vaxxers to say it's fine to spread measles.

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@luckytran I think it's really interesting that the primary reason that the antivaxxers are so adamant is they have an (unfortunately well founded) belief that things like measles are less likely to be fatal to their children than underprivileged ones. So they see other groups suffering more, and think that's fine. Trading on no consequences.

Niki Haley wants to raise the SS retirement age to 70.

Life expectancy for African American men in the US is 62*.

For men in general? 73.

Enjoy your negative 8 and 3 years everyone.

*This is for black men born in 1960 ... the cohort who would be retiring soon if they weren't dropping like flies.

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@futurebird She also touts flat tax, like that won't be incredibly awful for everyone who isn't rich. I cannot get over how bad it is, and people earning 50k are somehow cheering losing considerably more money while people earning 1 million+ will pay way less .

I have no clue.

So let me get this straight. Gov. Abbott of TX says he’ll defy federal law because an “invasion” has happened at the border, but the GOP refuses to fix the border because that would hand Biden a political win? Have I got that right?

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@rbreich What's really bugging me, entirely out of proportion to the actually potentially serious issue, is did you really have to take a stand on if federal agents could clip some wires?

Like, if you are going to have a major jurisdiction and PR kerfuffle and talk fairly openly about succession, could it have been about something a little more dramatic? Sounds more like the state of Texas is fighting with the US government in small claims court over a cable install.

Nikki Haley:

-Said Florida’s Don’t Say Gay bill “doesn’t go far enough”

-Would sign a federal abortion ban

-Pledged not to "expand Medicaid ever”

-Proudly called herself a “union-buster”

Don't let anyone fool you into thinking she’s some moderate alternative to Trump.

Oggie ,
@Oggie@woof.group avatar

@rbreich It's also worth noting that she's firmly pro flat tax, which yes, is extremely minor in the above contexts, but it also shows that she -actively- wants to harm the middle class, and anyone struggling.

She's not a good one.
