How many of the rest of us get to appeal our four month prison sentences to the Supreme Court of the United States of America with any expectation that they would hear the case?

Nougat ,

How about when someone gets sentenced to prison, they - I dunno - get sent to fucking prison by the law enforcement personnel in the fucking courtroom?

Tell me you have a Pentastar without telling me you have a Pentastar.

If that's the engine we're talking about, the oil cooler and filter housing assembly is made of plastic, and it's under the intake manifold. Aftermarket replacements (Dorman) are all aluminum and do not have this issue.

I watched Fury Road and Furiosa back to back and I noticed something interesting. (Spoilers inside, obviously.)

It seems to me that George Miller agrees with the fan belief that the Mad Max films are a series of tales rather than a chronology or anything like that, because there are some huge discontinuities, and I am fairly sure that is intentional. You may dispute this, but you will have to come up with some convoluted explanations for...

Nougat ,

I am so onboard with them being folklore, especially as "further out" from events we get. I mean, even Fury Road was basically apocalyptic Fantastic Mr. Fox.

OG Mad Max - pretty "accurate" in its telling, pretty directly based in "fact" (in-universe fact), but sets the stage of legend with Max as the one who actively seeks to exact "justice" in a world where justice is fading.

Road Warrior, definitely a little more "legendary," Max comes out of the wasteland to rescue a settlement in a blaze of glory, and returns to the wasteland from which he emerged.

Beyond Thunderdome, more fantastic with the pig shit factory and the Thunderdome and the gulag and the train and the kids.

Didn't Plato ascribe some of his own "parables" to Socrates? The story we are told is that "this story was told by the History Man"; perhaps that detail is part of the story?

Oh I'm sure. When I was in Catholic elementary school in the late 70s and early 80s, there was still a paddle on display in the office. Whether it was still put to use or not, I can't say, but as children, it was pointed out to everyone, and we all feared it. The administration actively failed to dispel any myths about it, so even if they weren't still beating children with it physically, they still were mentally.

Spectrum Call Center in Charlotte, NC Reportedly Provided Fried Chicken and Watermelon to Employees for Juneteenth ( thencbeat.com )

“We want to acknowledge some feedback received regarding our Juneteenth celebration,” Pezzuto said in his letter obtained by The North Carolina Beat. “Although our intent was to celebrate this nationally recognized day, some of you voiced your concerns regarding the associated food choices.”...

If fried chicken and watermelon were the only things served, then there's a problem. Otherwise, no.

Unless the other things served were grape drink and Newports.

Eeesh, that's an edge case.

The Palo-Alto-based SuperPAC, backed by tech giants like Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and LinkedIn founder Reed Hoffman, is raising at least $10 million to help better understand the algorithms that help Trump and his allies dominate vertical video platforms.

"Is raising." That's their goal, not what they have raised. Headline is misleading.

I am scared to flirt with girls.

I don't have any issue talking to girls when the intent is not romantic/sexual. OK I have met someone, first few conversations went alright, how do I transition to something else without being embarrassed and feeling like a dick? Like, if I want to say something technical or communicate for something else, everything is fine....

Always remember: If you say something to someone which "alarms or disturbs" them, you can be arrested for disorderly conduct.

Edit: Even if you do no such thing, all they have to do is lie.

Nougat ,

Those are the chances you take.

Women for the most part aren't insane demons ...

I agree. But how can you tell? When there's a risk of arrest and criminal charges, it's better to just steer clear.

More to the point, in a FPTP + EC, a failure to vote for the candidate you hate least in certain states gives the candidate you hate more a better chance of winning the presidency.

While the propagandists would have us believe otherwise, this is not "supporting 'genocide'." It's just math.

Do you live in Illinois? Idaho? Vote for whoever you want. Illinois is going to send its electors for Biden, and Idaho is going to send its electors for Trump, and your vote is not going to change that. Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona? Check yourself before you wreck fucking everything.

Here's a description of how this works:

Let’s look at a concrete example to get a better sense of what’s going on. A taxpayer has a property which has appreciated. It currently has a market value of $1 million, with a cost basis [how much was paid for it] of $100,000. This taxpayer wishes to conduct an outright sale. If that happens, though, the taxpayer would incur a significant liability because of the sizable gain [capital gains tax on the difference between the cost basis and the sale price]. The taxpayer, therefore, finds a related party who has a much higher basis of, say, $950,000 on a property with a current market value of $1.1 million. The parties then conduct a direct swap exchange.

Based on the foregoing example, the related party receives a property with a market value of $1 million. Meanwhile, the cost basis of $950,000 stays the same. The related party then ultimately sells the relinquished property and incurs a much, much, smaller liability [capital gains tax] from the sale. The two parties then distribute the profits between themselves. Eventually, the related party reacquires the replacement property with a deed back.

This type of transaction may not run afoul of the requirements of Section 1031 on paper. Clearly, though, it offends the underlying purposes of Code Section 1031. The sole purpose of the related party is to realize greater profits. The courts have now collapsed these types of transactions. “Basis shifting” is now a well-established violation of the related party rules.

Of particular note, this is already a violation. What the IRS wants to do is actually enforce the rules that this behavior violates.

Hospitals jacking up prices is kind of a function of the insurance industry. Insurance says "We're only going to pay you ten percent of what you've actually billed," so health care providers take the amount that they're willing to receive for the services and add a zero to the end. This becomes the "retail price," and you don't get access to the insurance price. Only the insurance companies do, and you have to pay them a monthly "protection fee," whether you require healthcare that month or not.

Nougat ,

FWIW, Cigna insurance tells its insured people that health care providers are never supposed to send bills to patients.

Colorado Republican Brutally Grilled By Local News Anchor: ‘Why Is Abortion Good For Your Girlfriend? Bad For Other Women?’ ( www.mediaite.com )

The 6-3 majority opinion written by Justice Clarence Thomas said a semiautomatic rifle with a bump stock is not an illegal machine gun because it doesn’t make the weapon fire more than one shot with a single pull of the trigger.

While I have not followed this case or read this ruling, bolded section would appear to be true (maybe, I can think of reasons that it could be seen differently). However, that doesn't mean that bump stocks are legal. It just means that the case before the court was to decide whether a bump stock turned a semiauto into a "machine gun."

It would be elementary to make bump stocks illegal, because bump stocks are not firearms. Making bump stocks illegal wouldn't cross the Second Amendment.

Nougat ,

Right, that's the kind of thought I was having with my "maybe" clause. The operator of the rifle is arguably a mechanical part of the automatic trigger pull when a bump stock is employed, because the operator is not willfully choosing to pull the trigger each individual time. The trigger is being actioned by a mechnical process outside of the conscious will of the operator.

Oh, sure - I knew I was going to get that technically wrong. I was trying to use the least number of words to express that it would be quite simple to use this kind of thing to put the "right" people in charge of decision-making, and the "wrong" people into deadly combat situations, or at the very least, into positions lowly enough that they can be systematically conditioned to stifle their own political will.

"Right" and "wrong" above can certainly mean stupid shit like "skin color" or "ethnicity," but I was actually thinking about it in terms of political ideology. Dead people can't vote.
