I have a few ground-nesting bees buddies in the yard.
They're chill and I see them pollinating my garden now and then.
They're now part of the family and I'll knock some sense in any guest who tries to harm them.

I use different things for different edges.
Most of my hard working tools end up with a convex edge, I like them better for chopping stuff like wood and asklemmy posters bones and its good durability doing so.
So that's either automotive sandpaper in various grits, or 3M's paperless abrasive sheets (easier on curvy stuff). Slap a thin foam sheet or two on your work surface, choose your paper grit, work it, change to a figer grit, repeat until happy.
What I like about those is they're huge and easily replaced. I've done flat edges with them too by simply not using the foam.

For more traditional flat edges, I've mostly been using a pair of DMT's dual sided butterfly thingies, so that's indeed 4 different grits. That's what I use because that's what I got ages ago and got used to them. They're ok. Nothing amazing, but it works and it's small enough to sit in the kitchen drawer.

I also have a fancy kit that clamps on the blade with a metal arm that keep the tiny stone a the same angle and whatnot but it's kinda annoying to setup.
It's probably more consistent than anything I do by hand, but I never bother using it because it's clunky.

In the end, whatever you actually use is gonna be better than anything that sits in storage.

Writers of Lemmy, what good character qualities/virtues do your main characters have that you don't?

A fascinating question because I used to intentionally make my characters Mary Sues. As a former child who used to write, for a while I never understood why people would give character traits they disagree with to the character or characters who are supposed to represent what is right in your world, since they're the ones...

Right, while it technically has a user-level solution, you're right that a brand new user would simply not know about any of this.
I stumble upon a few now and then when they try and report stuff from there.
So... something like autoblocking the instance on user creation... which might make more sense than outright defederation. A bot could probably be made to do that and send them a DM with instructions on how to change it off they so wish.

I too am using Firefox for lemmy.

  • It has uBlock Origin already, so any link I do follow through isn't an ad infested hellhole.
  • It has multiple tabs, which I use a lot.
  • I can bookmark anything, maybe a post, a user profile, whatever, it works.
  • I consider the lack of notifications a pro

People suck, although maybe not too surprising for a college party.

Hell, I usually pick up garbage on walks when I'm on vacation somewhere.
And there's a 50/50 chance of locals looking at me like I'm an alien, especially at something like a public beach. People have come up to me, completely dumbfounded as to why I would pick up garbage at all, let alone in a place I don't even live.
Realistically, I know I'm not picking anywhere close to everything and my impact on the pollution of these place has been mostly temporary, but I'll be damned if I walk by the same garbage twice.

Instance admins can see your votes, not just local admins, but remote ones too.
I personally don't check those that often, but it's sometimes useful to investigate harassment, astroturfing, etc.

It does seem out of sync by a few hours, sometimes lemmy needs to catch up with large instances.
Maybe you have 'Show read posts' unchecked in your account settings, which would hide older posts you've seen.

Hmm, it's actually not out of sync, just the pinned posts are unpinned on .world but not on discuss, which I think is another known bug in lemmy.
Sounds like an account settings thing to me.
My guess is either show read posts is unchecked, or you selected different languages in settings.

Which is something I ran into now and then with a community/user I blocked before becoming an admin.
Super confusing when you get a report and it brings you to a blank page with no info.

I love my wife's long hair, but idk, I love her more than I do her hair.
If she buzz cuts it, or ever gets cancer and loses it, or, whatever happens really, I can't really see my feelings for her changing over this.

I can't know if it's about other changes related to your depressions, coping with agender-ness, attraction, control, or whatever, but I think none of us here is really equipped to help you out.
Not that I don't want to help, but you're probably better off seeking professional help.

Now, whether that's a solo psychologist or couples therapy, be mindful of choosing a practitioner that's friendly to the agender and trans people.
I imagine it would suck for your wife to get shoved into a religious zealot's trad-wife conversion therapy.

Water will find a way.
We had the whole foundation drain replaced and urethane sprayed the whole thing.
That was expensive as fuck, but no regrets.
The dehumidifier barely has to run in the basement now too.
Still, 20k was a lot of money to keep water out.

Got it.

Your PNG contains extra data after the PNG's IEND marker which pict-rs probably errors on.
Your images aren't stored as-is, among other things, their metadata is stripped so people don't unwittingly share their geolocation, etc.
It rewrites the file in the process, but in this case doesn't know what to do with the non png compliant data appended at the end.

Here's a fixed version of your image that uploads fine.

Using pngcheck -vf on the original image will give you the starting hex offset (0x10fc31) of that invalid chunk of data, which can then be browsed with whatever hex editor.
I haven't investigated that extra data much.
It might be part of a 'capture the flag' game, or not.

The fixed image is just the first bytes of the file upto that invalid extra chunk.

A1: probably, although that's more processing power. The tool I used to fix it would have outputted a second image file if the extra data had been an image, which is then a weird case to handle. (Upload both? Make 2 links?) Certainly, it could output a better error message though.

A2: Should be lemmy-wide, although technically a malicious server could disable that somehow, which I think would only affect their local users. ie: don't make an account on a server you don't trust.

A3: It is a server specific setting. It's easy enough to change the setting. Bigger limits uses more storage which costs money

A4: Possible, I would think. No idea if that's ever on the devs' roadmap. I think that would be added to the pict-rs code which is then used by the lemmy server.
Both are open source projects, so an instance implementing this could then share the code so it's eventually a feature for everyone.

I've ran into bugs before on some public image host I don't remember where it wouldn't strip metadata if you uploaded an album. It's probably a good practice to strip metadata before uploading, although much less convenient. I double-check that it still works here from time to time, doubly so after upgrading versions.

a home-instance temp ban will override a remote instance perma ban (there’s a PR in the works to fix this , but it’s the way things are currently)

The way things work now is annoying.

Troll creates an account on instance A, posts racist shit or other uninspired bait on instance B.
Gets instantly permabanned from instance B.
3 days later, home instance A decides to ban them for a week.
Thus, a week later, user is automatically unbanned from home instance and all federated instances, including where they were permabanned.
Current behaviour is bananas.

This particular troll's lack of creativity is unsurprising.

It might not just be lemmy.world, but several times recently I've made posts (usually to !helldivers2.lemmy.ca) that I check throughout the day. Then like 8 hours after I've made the post, I'll see comments appear from people on lemmy.world that are several hours old....
