As someone who's not too familiar with the bureaucracy of academia I have to ask: Can't the authors just upload all their studies to ResearchGate or some other website if they want? I know that they often share it privately with others when they request a paper, so can they post it publicly too?

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare

It's a shame that it doesn't seem to have that many players anymore. It's a lot like other multi-class shooter games like Overwatch and Paladins, but about three times more crazy and weird, and I had a ton of fun playing it as a teen.

I've heard Garden Warfare 2 is pretty good too though, so I'll consider buying it at some point (when I have money).

Not sure how deeply positive it was necessarily, but as far as I can tell I changed at least one person's life significantly.

When I was in middle school I learned how to solve the Rubik's cube through online tutorials, and afterwards I was basically addicted to it for a while and I was messing with a cube all the time. One of my classmates was interested in learning how to solve one, so I drew a bunch of guides and taught him the terminology, and soon enough he was also hooked on the Rubik's cube.

I eventually grew tired of it, but he kept going and learned how to solve all sorts of smaller and bigger cubes and pyramids. I bumped into him at uni a few years later and he had a cube in his hand lol. Last I heard of him he was even participating in some local competitions, but idk what he's up to now.

Even if he ultimately gave up on his speedcubing dreams I can at least say that I introduced him to a cool new hobby that kept him entertained for several years.

There's a fairly well-known story that illustrates this that I'll paraphrase here.[1, 2]

A Redditor thought that he was being homophobic towards his gay roommate because he got mad whenever he saw his roommate with other guys. Fast forward a couple of days and after discussing this with several Redditors and his sister he finds out that what he's feeling isn't homophobia, but rather jealousy. Eventually him and his roommate talk it out and they end up in a relationship.

Had this happened a couple decades earlier their story would have likely gone very differently. For starters the gay roommate probably wouldn't have been out about being gay and might have been acting in a more stereotypically "straight" manner to not raise suspicion. Had the straight guy found out that his roommate was gay there would be a higher chance that he was homophobic, and even if he wasn't he'd be far less likely to question his own sexuality after thinking of himself as straight for his entire life. Their story only ended the way it did because they live in a time where homophobia is less prevalent in society.

As societal acceptance increases more people who experience same-sex attraction and gender dysphoria are willing to explore and adopt a non-heterosexual and/or trans identity, and more people are willing to tell that to a pollster as well.

The life expectancy of queer people also appears to be smaller for a variety of reasons, although the gap with cishet people seems to have reduced over time.

Winter because I live in Brazil, which is a tropical and very humid country so the heat can get unbearable even here in the south where it's colder compared to the north.

There are a few cities that get cold enough to reach negative Cº, but where I live it's mostly between 10º-20º during winter so I just need some extra coats and more blankets and I'm happy. During summer I can only take off so many layers before it becomes illegal.

I've always thought that the biggest difference between religious people and atheists is that we're willing to just say "I don't know".

I don't know if there was something before the universe, how it'll end or if there will be something after, or if we're in some kind of simulation, or whatever else. But I'm willing to leave it at that and I don't feel the need to point to some deity to fill in the gaps of my knowledge.

This is a bad habit of mine lol

I made a video a while back on the topic of political violence which I intended to be only like 5min long, but actually turned into 30 minutes as I researched more and came across more stuff I wanted to discuss on this subject.

I'm doing the same thing now as I'm writing an article on the Cass Review which is already 20 pages long and I'm probably gonna go over 30. I have two pages dedicated entirely to discussing only one of the items of the modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale that some of the systematic reviews used, and I decided to leave it there because if I were to discuss all of the items in detail I could write three times more.

Buy Minecraft, which apparently is on sale for $14.99. It's not quite as fun when all your friends have the official version and get to play together while you're stuck with an - *ahem* - unofficial version.

$15 is like 80 BRL and I don't have a single cent to my name right now so...

*oops now there's a cold war and thousands of nukes*

Like come on, if there's one person who didn't like to make things simple it was Einstein. The guy was a fan of the Soviet Union, which was established through a revolution. This is just a catchy one-liner about pointless wars and militarism, not a deep and detailed political analysis.

According to a new report released Sunday, 3,309 cases of hate and violence against the LGBTQ community were reported to the Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel in 2022.

Twenty-five percent of all reports of anti-LGBT incidents occurred during the months of November and December, after the elections and around the time the new government was being sworn in. This is an increase of about 11 percent compared to 2021, when about 2,971 cases were reported. The association reports that the increase is part of a continuing trend in the number of reports in recent years.

But Israel is totally an LGBTQ safe haven, guys...

Like what's the threshold here? How homophobic does a group of people have to be to justify genocide? Can the same argument be made towards Republicans, since a majority of them are homophobic?

It's just some smug wojak. It's one of the plethora of "thin beard + glasses" variants, and this one is based on Tighten.

Not only was My Sharona explicitly inspired by a 17yo girl the guitarist was dating, the name of their second album was "...But the Little Girls Understand"

These guys were pretty on the nose about what they liked...

Only band that was even more on the nose was Oingo Boingo with the song "Little Girls", though I guess the singer said it was meant to be some kind of sick joke intended to offend.

Also a random coincidence, but apparently the parody song "My Bologna" was what kickstarted Al Yankovic's career.

Posting about this in a place as left-leaning as Lemmy really won't positively impact Fuentes in any way. We just get to have a good laugh at the fact that he and other Nazis are complete buffoons.

I'm not old enough to have used Limewire myself, but my dad used eMule to download some songs and movies that we liked in the early 2000s.

Still, at 24 I'm basically middle-aged in internet years.

Not to sound like a Twitter wokescold or whatever, but Shaun does this all the time. A cishet white guy from England who won't be affected in any way by the outcome of the U.S. election, yet constantly tweets and retweets about how the Democrats and Republicans are totally equally bad and voting makes no difference.

But when we look at what Republicans are doing and saying like...

  • Trump saying he'll be a "dictator for one day"

  • His lawyers arguing that a president killing an opponent should be considered an official act protected by law

  • The potential Republican vice-candidate bragging about shooting a puppy and other farm animals

  • Reports that DeSantis enjoyed torturing people at Guantanamo

  • Multiple Republican politicians and pundits calling for the eradication of trans people

I think this take doesn't hold up. It's no coincidence that many of the people with this mentality are also the ones who'll be minimally affected by a Republican presidency, if at all.

One that I really like is Dear David by Adam Ellis. And yeah yeah, I know that he's going for the usual "true ghost story" marketing shtick or whatever, but these stories that don't just use cheap jumpscares and instead build a sense of constant threat and impending doom are the ones that make it harder for me to sleep at night.

I heard that the movie is trash though 🙈
