(Meta) So many questions here are not open ended. Does anyone care?

There are a significant amount of questions here that do not follow the criteria in the sidebar, especially “1. Open-ended question” and “5. An actual topic of discussion”. It seems some folks want others to do research for them, or to troubleshoot some random issue....

HobbitFoot ,

The issue with a lot of subs on Lemmy is too little content, not too much. There isn't enough traffic to warrant high moderation and said moderation may scare off those who want to participate.

I wonder if part of it is because more parents are parents because they chose to be. There are a lot of stories from older people where they became adults because they became parents, creating a lot of resentment.

HobbitFoot ,

But I thought Russia was super scared of NATO.

HobbitFoot ,

The problem with some bad systems is that people recognize the system as bad, but can't create a better system.

HobbitFoot ,

It is better to have angry drivers behind you?

HobbitFoot ,

I think it is more writing to people for whom that is the case.

The economy is shifting to a set of haves and have-nots. The problems that the haves deal with are tied a lot more to economic performance than have-nots.

You also have a case where unemployment is still low, with a lot of the issue being tied to low minimum wages. Usually, the problems that have-nots have with the economy have been tied to unemployment. You can get a job in this economy, it just won't be well paying.

How do I explain two years of doing nothing to a university for masters?

Ever since I've graduated on September 2022, I've not had a job. Maybe a crappy internship, but I wasn't provided with a 'certificate', or letter that proves if I've worked for them. That was around October 2022, and I quit voluntarily at the end of January 2023. Since then, I've not worked anywhere as a software dev, be it...

College CV's are different and are meant to go more into detail regarding specific accomplishments.

‘Will I ever retire?’: millennials wonder what’s on the other side of middle age ( www.theguardian.com )

Claire*, 42, was always told: “Follow your dreams and the money will follow.” So that’s what she did. At 24, she opened a retail store with a friend in downtown Ottawa, Canada. She’d managed to save enough from a part-time government job during university to start the business without taking out a loan....

HobbitFoot ,

It will probably happen once the cut triggers. You are going to immediately see a lot of angry voters.

For some, you get the Jack Walsh thinking that some employees are going to be statistically bad performers, so it is good to get rid of them.

You also have other cases where lowering the time to train means you can expand faster since you don't need to find quality staff. The original McDonald's trained its staff to be able to be high output restaurants. The business model changed to needing less worker training to help fuel expansion.

You also have the case where some managers believe some jobs only require a commodity level labor. At that point, there is no value in training.

The technology was there; the humanity wasn't.

HobbitFoot ,

You are essentially making the silly "but yet you choose to live in society" argument.

I don't think so. OP wasn't saying to stop uploading to YouTube, but to upload to alternate sites as well and maybe lead their audiences there by mentioning it in videos.

HobbitFoot ,

The only thing I'm not too happy about is the amount of spam it is causing.

Is China trying to flip the Filipino flag?

I will reciprocate hugs.

I don't like snuggling.

Playful wrestling gets really close to other acts to establish dominance that I don't want to do with my friends.

What mundane things of our era could be seen as beautiful or admirable in the future?

For example, buildings and houses more than a hundred years old keep getting more and more rare, and often have an aesthetic that stands out, more ornate or with a particular style that most people can't afford today or that is not financially convenient etc. But back in the day, that's how things were built and most people...

I see a lot of electronics becoming the same form of a black rectangle. I think the design of older electronics will be cherished.

He's Riker now.

He really didn't like the end to Discovery.

HobbitFoot ,

Can I change it?

I got a scan that detected cancer which I was later able to get removed. That cancer would have probably killed me in five years.

If I get told that I'll die of cancer in twenty years, I'm going to deal with it in ten years.

I'm a structural engineer.

Spatial skills are required and some people seem surprised that you need them.

Writing skills are also really needed and a lot of people seem surprised that the autistic kid in the back of class needs to communicate to hundreds of people in a way they understand.

HobbitFoot ,

I've seen several structural engineers break down when asked to draw what they designed.

HobbitFoot ,

When I say they can't draw it, I mean they can't visualize how the pieces fit together. It isn't a comment on their artistic skill.

I had one about the possible affects fall of the Cuban Embargo and the answers felt uninspired. Like, a bunch of people were talking about the benefits of the fall of the Cuban Embargo but no one could talk about how it could change both countries.

HobbitFoot ,

If you didn't comment this, I would have.

HobbitFoot ,

Porto, Portugal.

That said, it was a great place to visit, but I don't know if I would want to live there.

HobbitFoot ,

What's cooler than being cool?

HobbitFoot ,

Montreal is getting the new REM. Plus, Montreal isn't that rude. I just think Midwesterners love to complain.

HobbitFoot ,

What caused the Great Schism built a really fancy building.

The South Sea Bubble would have worked if they sold it to the French.

At my company, we had someone who told us they were planning on moving countries within a year, but hadn't given a firm date to leave. We interpreted it as we weren't given an official notice until they confirmed the date.

Even after they gave a date, we still treated them as a normal employee, but we did tell them we expected that their quality of work wouldn't drop during this period. I don't know how that would work in positions where the policy is to cut off access after someone gives their notice.

HobbitFoot ,

It looks like we are already at the point with some AI where we can correct the output instead of add new input. Microsoft is using LinkedIn to help get professional input for free.

HobbitFoot ,

But humans also need input as well.

HobbitFoot ,

At least you'll never have to worry about overdosing on it.

HobbitFoot ,

Some North American malls have them.

The problem is that a lot of American malls are in decline and can barely afford to keep the escalators working, let alone install these lights.

HobbitFoot ,

Part of the problem is that a lot of hotel and other property owners don't want cheap capsule hotels.

HobbitFoot ,

No.

I've been able to identify potential incidents before they get out of hand and diffuse them.

HobbitFoot ,

I'm assuming that's for other people reading as I don't really care to correct my grammar that much on Lemmy.

HobbitFoot ,

Nah. They just electrocute elephants in Brooklyn.

No one tell him about the St. Louis Olympics Marathon.
