If you prefer an open source app, native, complete, with a decent UI and an active developer community, the official one is definitely the best. And I mean Jerboa, because it is the official client made by the very same people that are making Lemmy (so always compatible and up-to-date with the server development).

Otherwise, if you don't mind using a closed source app, Summit is the most feature rich one and it is maintained by a professional industry-level native Android developer who really knows what he's doing.

Finally, if you want to experiment with a cross platform app, open source and well maintained, with a really nice user interface, have a try with Thunder.

The far right has been ruling my country for 2 years now. Their campaigns have been specifically targeting Muslim migrants (even foreign workers, because they can marry locals, become citizens and generate offspring and other bullsh1t)... but looking at the facts and not the propaganda, this government has quietly more than doubled the number or yearly visas released for work reasons, just to say "look we cut irregular migration to a minimum".

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

I agree in that Summit is the most feature complete and polished Lemmy client for Android.

As a European I can reassure you: younger generations aren't considered by politics (and in turn young people don't consider politics at all and don't even go to vote, abstentionsism is skyrocketing). The headline is a little exaggerated.

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

I was like "wait, what, why that Lemmy app looks familiar?" and after a while I realized...

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

far-right, far-left and populist movements

Isn't this how it is supposed to work? Why should anyone's voice be silenced if all opinions are worth the same?

The customers of those two banks should express their gratitude to their governments!

Yes, true!

libs and elections gaslighting

The notion that Biden represents a lesser evil compared to the chaotic reign of Trump is a common argument. However, we must not forget that there exists a moral threshold below which neither choice is acceptable. To suggest that enabling a literal genocide can be considered a lesser evil is a morally bankrupt stance....

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

I agree 100% I am European so probably I should stfu about US politics but since here we are living a similar situation with libs supporting genocide and far-right crackheads promising all kind of things (outlawing homosexuality, expelling all immigrants, ban disabled people from classrooms, etc.) I think that experiencing the "worst" is useful to awaken consciences and, moreover, I am so resigned I do not even thing the "worst" can be avoided at this point. People just vote for them.

Efficient of inefficient, polluting or non-polluting, exploitative (for both land and people) or not, agriculture is still the basis of a large part of the world's economy.

If it were to collapse, I don't dare to imagine how many angry jobless people there would be and what they could do. If people in IT get laid off, no one cares, but farmers scary./s

That's in Italy (Milan) and it is due to lack of public funds to pay for monument restoration.

DieguiTux8623 ,

Or the Municipality of Milan, which is from an opposition party and in continuous struggle with the central government (and the regional one).

It is a country without future, and there is no hope for the situation to improve any time soon. Extremely low wages, no affordable housing, healthcare unavailable and poor access to education/services in general but high taxation. It would be crazy to expect anyone to plan to have a family!

Why not everything else too (electronic hardware, toys, clothes, etc...)?

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls? ( slrpnk.net )

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up....

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

Personally, I would be in favor of having polls because I frequently involve people in taking decisions.

But my use case is quite peculiar because (1) I need to know people's opinion to take actions based on it, they would not be just informative polls (2) this group of people use Lemmy as their main interaction medium, no other platform is involved.

I've resorted to strawpoll in the past or in having comments with multiple options and relying on the most upvoted comment but these solutions have downsides.

Developing software and managing a community are totally different skills and mastering both is not to be taken for granted.

Plus, since you are very passionate about the open source projects you maintain or contribute to, it is difficult to "detach" yourself from people's issues and not feel every criticism as a personal attack (and yes, when your software does not have the features/behavior they expect, some people can express their disappointment in quite a sharp way).

I prefer not to make anyone pay anything but "you get what it is, be warned that you may experience some bugs or lack of support for certain devices" (because I can't buy every piece of hardware and test). Few people have accepted this model but, those who did, have always been supportive and respectful, making me rediscover a little hope that kindness isn't dead at all.

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

Once I was told that I deserved to be fired and, another time, I was told that I am unable to think properly so I shouldn't work as a software developer.

Both remarks were quite painful because they were not questioning my ideas/opinions but my professional abilities. I confess that in my "down" moments those thoughts tend to pop up even years later.

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

Needless to say, in neither case the discussion originated from a technical issue, both times we were arguing online about politics.

Hope it goes better than in Münich, though

In 2003, Munich announced it would be moving some 14,000 PCs off Windows and to Linux. In 2013, the LiMux project finished, but high associated costs and user dissatisfaction resulted in Munich announcing in 2017 that it would spend the next three years reverting back to Windows.

@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

There are Lemmy APIs for it and some apps (like Voyager) allow to see all contents you upvoted or downvoted. Depends on which platform you are on and which client you are using.

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

I've already added it, it's in the latest stable release 1.9.0, you can access it from the profile screen under "Upvotes and downvotes".

China faces more scrutiny from the West over its aggressive export practices — overcapacity and huge subsidies. ( www.dw.com )

Chinese firms can often undercut their Western counterparts for many reasons, including cheaper labor and economies of scale. But they also benefit from very generous state incentives, which help to make foreign rivals uncompetitive....

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

I have already started hearing protectionistic proclaims about Chinese EVs in Europe. Sounds awkward when every single piece of technological hardware is made there and nobody has ever complained for decades. But when businessmen see their domain under threat they become aggressive.

When I realized, unfortunately in my 30s, that the word "dandelion" is just a badly pronounced version of "dent-de-lion" (even in my country those flowers are called "dente di leone") I started thinking that there's some truth in that statement.

Giorgia Meloni’s Grip on Italian TV Is Turning Off Viewers ( jacobin.com )

Giorgia Meloni’s government has imposed such blatant domination over Italian public broadcaster RAI that its programming has been nicknamed “Tele-Meloni.” The changes have drawn considerable backlash — and are driving ever more Italians to change channels....

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

Summary of the article: audience is shifting from public networks (which have always been under governmental control for decades, no matter the ruling party so not Meloni's fault) to private networks, namely Mediaset which is owned by Berlusconi's heirs.

What could possibly go wrong? Out from the frying pan into the fire!

Does Reddit shadowban mentions of Lemmy?

In the months since I deleted my Reddit accounts and joined Lemmy, the lack of user base growth has made it clear that we need some users to stay on Reddit as a means of shepherding more users over on an ongoing basis. Otherwise, Reddit simply got what it wanted: less users who make a fuss about how it manages its platform...

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

If the back end provided support for multi-communities it would work cross-app in the same way... unfortunately it looks like this is not a priority for the time being.

@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

Not all mobile apps allow it because it's a little tricky with the Lemmy APIs.

  • Liftoff used to have thia feature but it's discontinued;
  • Summit has added this feature, you can access it by "Community info" -> "Instance info" -> "Communities" when you are on a community on the instance you want to explore;
  • RaccoonForLemmy has it in the "Instance info" sheet tapping the "⋮" button in the top bar when you are on a community of the instance you want to explore;
  • I couldn't find anything similar in Jerboa, Voyager, Thunder and Eternity, don't know about the other ones.

Some parties have been very clever to exploit the current situation (spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt) to their advantage.

It's very likely that they will ascend to a dominant position in the EU institutions and consolidate their hegemony further.

Good luck to all Europeans! 🥂

The first time some random user files a sue in court the admins of their instance will be in trouble.

Lemmy devs are not affected, but instance admins are and according to the GDPR they are considered "data controllers" and are responsible for the processing of users' data.

As far as I understand it, this lacking feature is an open "challenge" to existing regulation and legislators, maybe also to open people's eyes about the fact that privacy claims are often not enforced even by those who claim to do so.

Sublinks' Community-Driven Approach and Contributor Onboarding?

I like open-source projects with transparency and community-driven approach to development. How does Sublinks ensure transparency and community involvement in its development process? Could you shed some light on the guidelines or process by which feature requests are evaluated, approved, rejected, and prioritized for inclusion...

Many countries need help to be "germanized" around there... wait, when have I already heard anything similar? /s

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

Yes, passing through the Venetian vulgar where the "cla" cluster which evolved to modern Italian "-chia-" [ki̯a] is further palatalized to "cia" [t͡ʃa].

The original salute was meaning is "I am at your command". In that region we still today, even it it's rare / something that only elderly people do, use the form "mandi", derived from "comandi" (i.e. again "at your commands").

DieguiTux8623 ,
@DieguiTux8623@feddit.it avatar

I like yours better, your answer is far more extensive with explanation of the whole word and comparison with other languages.

About the "sc" pattern [st͡ʃ]: it is very peculiar of the Venetian dialect but is not present in standard Italian: another example would be "mas'cio” (meaning "pig" or "male") from Latin "masculus" > *masclus > maschio (as in Italiano) > mas'cio.

It was me... I chose the article which best described those facts, unfortunately there was very little attention given to the event by the international press, so only few sources were available. I preferred to delete my post because the accusation of being "Erdoğan's propaganda" would have led the article to be ignored. I posted a more neutral press agency note in another more "tolerant" community to avoid similar effects again.

What is most disturbing is the violence used against peaceful minors, they were not causing turmoil or damaging structures. This should not pass silently.

Yes there still is hope. And hope that younger generations are not totally brainwashed or passively accepting everything.
