Dagamant ,

I can probably look this up but how does size effect the result in these things?

Dagamant ,

Thanks!

Dagamant ,

No, we just kinda stumbled into each other in social situations and went from there.

Dagamant ,

I looked up the bug bite thing. Im glad that someone paid attention to the way most proteins in bites/stings break down if heated. I bet it works pretty good

Dagamant ,

it says it gets to 170F. thats hot enough to get shallow stuff like mosquito bites and most stings.

Dagamant ,

im not sure and it would vary from protein to protein but the thing says it gets up to 170F which is probably enough for a fair few

Dagamant ,

I want a dumb phone that acts as a hotspot for my tablet and other devices.

Dagamant ,

This is only a problem because of money. Maybe California should install some power storage centers in order to hold the excess for later.

Dagamant ,

Im a fan of gravity based energy storage. Excess energy is used to raise a weight up a slope and it can be reclaimed when the weight is released.

Dagamant ,

Yeah, sorry I missed that single sentence in the article that is so plastered with ads that my phone has trouble displaying the page. I’ll be sure to do better next time.

Dagamant ,

The site is serious crap on mobile. Between all the poppins and the ads reloading to make it jump around as you read. It’s damn hard to read a full article on a lot of these news sites.

Dagamant ,

I mean, it’s a pretty good excuse. The sites job is to inform people and they do a shit job of it. I’m literally checking lemmy on my phone while taking a break so when some link leads to a site that’s damn near unreadable I’m not spending my entire break futzing with settings to make it readable. Like I said, I’ll do better next time.

[Question] Why is Matrix mentioned more often than XMPP in self hosted forums?

I'm looking into hosting one of these for the first time. From my limited research, XMPP seems to win in every way, which makes me think I must be missing something. Matrix is almost always mentioned as the de-facto standard, but I rarely saw arguments why it is better than XMPP?...

Dagamant ,

Its newer.

Dagamant ,

Im 100% with you. If I were going to set one up it would probably be XMPP. However I havent dug into the features of each to do a proper analysis on which would suit my needs because I have no need for a chat service right now.

Dagamant ,

doesnt hurt th check the hash against what the distributor publishes.

I was in Texas for the eclipse. It messed me up driving on little two lane country roads with a 75mph speed limit. Back home only the big highways get close to that

Can someone demystify computer Ports for me? Please? Blocking, unblocking, opening, allowing, VPNs and their effect, what ports are and what they do, step by step, when you have to interact with them?

It's the one thing when I'm configuring things that makes me wince because I know it will give me the business, and I know it shouldn't, but it does, every time. I have no real idea what I'm doing, what it is, how it works, so of course I'm blindly following instructions like a monkey at a typewriter....

Dagamant ,

Thats a lot of information to ask for so ill try to be very basic. A port is like a window with a guy on the other side. if you speak the same language as the guy you can have a conversation.

There are 65535 windows available. the open have guys available for conversations, the closed ones dont.

When you open a port on your computer you should have a program that "listens" at that port so that others can use it to have a conversation.

A vpn takes all of the conversations your computer wants to have and sends them to a port on a server and the program listening to that conversation sends your requests to their intended destination and then sends you the result. Its like using a middleman to have a conversation.

Dagamant ,

I’m sure the cost is already much higher than they could afford. Between the bridge itself, the cost of diverting shipping and the economic impact of said diversion.

Dagamant ,

Of course they think the election was stolen, they tried like mad to steal it and failed so it’s obvious that someone stole harder than them.

Dagamant ,

What if this is that simulation tho.

Dagamant ,

I like the version of it from John Dies At The End. Same thought experiment just with an axe

Dagamant ,

I’m upvoting for the pill millipede. I think we should shorten it to pillipede tho.

Dagamant ,

I wonder how many of those active users are people who only use messenger because their friends use messenger. Or people who have auto login turned on and click a link from search results.

Monthly active users is a fairly deceptive metric for a social media platform because ANY activity can count you as an active user and Facebook has massive reach.

Dagamant ,

I switched to just using Docker and nginx reverse proxy. It’s more setup initially but less overhead.

My dad has a friend in Texas who lives directly in the path of totality. We are driving out there to stay on their ranch and watch the eclipse.

We looked at hotels after the last eclipse but it seems they learned that people travel to see these things and every one we checked had pumped their prices for the week.

    Dagamant ,

I spent too much time looking at the shelves before I found it

    Dagamant ,

Discord is horrible for exploitation. Since it’s lots of closed chats a lot of it goes unmonitored and unreported.

    Dagamant ,

I’ve had both from places recommended by locals, I’ll take New York pizza any day.

What's (are) the funniest/stupidest way(s) you've broken your linux setup?

Tinkering is all fun and games, until it's 4 am, your vision is blurry, and thinking straight becomes a non-option, or perhaps you just get overly confident, type something and press enter before considering the consequences of the command you're about to execute... And then all you have is a kernel panic and one thought...

    Dagamant ,

I thought about trying something like this the other day and quickly reconsidered

    Dagamant ,

also GMing Starfinder. I love starship combat but it is a slog. Any time my players get into starship combat it is almost garanteed to take the entire 3 hour session if not more. Its difficult for players to switch over to the different gameplay. for my current campaign I ended up just giving them a ship that can outrun just about anything so they wouldnt complain about starship combat anymore.

    Dagamant ,

I recently picked up Scum and Villany which is made to do exactly what you describe. I havent had a chance to run it yet though so the advertised use and actual game feel may be a bit different.

There is also Vast Grimm, a scifi reskin of Mork Borg. It is more locked into its setting than Mork Borg but with the expansion books that just came out it has plenty of options for space combat added in.

    Organizing TTRPG pdf collection?

I've been searching around for a way to organize my TTRPG collection of pdfs (numbering in the thousands to tens of thousands) and haven't really found a silver bullet for it yet. Everything I've looked at has some sort of weird thing that's off about it that doesn't seem to make it ideal. Is there something out there that...

    Dagamant ,

Depending on your technical know how, a personal cloud storage solution like nextcloud or own cloud might be a good option. I run nextcloud in a docker container with the storage mounted in my home directory and it lets me easily search, organize, and store hundreds of Ttrpg PDFs and I can give players access to books when needed.
