I am surprised by how easy it is to pretend to enjoy "chemical spill at the drinks company" flavour.

The time genie will bring back one (1) extinct animal from any time in all of earth's history. The animal will be integrated into an ecosystem seamlessly with no major negative consequences. You get to pick the creature.

Do you feel obligated to pick something like a sauropod just so people can experience the awe?

Do you bring back something more recent to correct the crimes of mankind?

Or are you selfish and you ask for hell ants so you can finally see how their mandibles work?

In my home setting, there are multiple inhabited moons orbiting the world (and other inhabited planets in the solar system). At some point, I'm going to introduce spelljamming ships, but it's already possible to walk to the other worlds. One of the big setting secrets is every world has deep caverns that connect to the Underdark―the same Underdark, which is one big extradimensional space or demiplane. You can go spelunking and come up hundreds of miles away or even on another planet!

This morning, as I was laying on the couch watching my son draw, I was reading a review of an adventure by Bryce Lynch. While criticizing florid prose, he wrote "Adventure writing is technical writing and has a different set of rules for how to present information." I'm inclined to agree with this statement, even though I've never really thought about it in those terms. Thoughts?

Da_Gut ,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon I've thought that for decades. Mind, I don't write adventures, but I've thought of them as technical writing for a very long time.

Da_Gut ,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

I’m reading a book on Thebes, and in the chapter on religion I was struck by how weird d&d is. It treats a polytheistic world in a monotheistic way.

And while it’s true that high priests of a specific cult would be focused on one god, for most people you would sacrifice or worship different gods at different times, depending on your needs at the time.

Need ideas for my next Traveller session.

They are still on The (Vargr) Great Hunt. Next stop is collecting rare plants on a swampy, xeno-alligator infested planet.

What are some interesting events or encounters I can throw at them to keep them on their toes?

Da_Gut ,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

@deinol Massive gator charging and bellowing, but not attacking. It's a parent guarding a nest mound (which gators actually do). The players spot one of the rarest plants.... at the top of the nest mound.

I went on a hike this weekend, at a festival of guided walks which, it seems, is frequented by retirees. Mr Absolutive and I were the youngest by at least fifteen years. Our fellow hikers never lacked breath to chat about their grandchildren.

My feet were blistered after the single hike. I wanted nothing more than to shower and lie down.

Meanwhile, all the grannies (who'd been doing this every day for a week), were eagerly swapping plans for dancing at that evening's ceilidh.

Da_Gut ,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan @Tim_Eagon @dragoncrown Hmm, I'm going to take an alternate position - I feel you are drawing a false distinction. Character generation is part of play - it's not a separate activity.
That being said, I do think ones enjoyment of character generation as play is dependent on where one falls on the simulationist to narrative axis of TTRPGs. Which is going to be different for everyone.
Of for one person within genres (Superheroes vs Fantasy for me).

Da_Gut ,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

@bedirthan @Tim_Eagon @dragoncrown Ah okay, yeah, that is different from character generation. Point taken.

Da_Gut ,
@Da_Gut@dice.camp avatar

@libraryogre @bedirthan @Tim_Eagon @dragoncrown 3.5 was the worst. Though at one time, you could die in Travellers character generation. Which is the most extreme example of losing character generation

Everyone running around excited a non-human primate "used medicine to treat wounds"

I'm just over here looking at ants who have been doing this since before you were an inkling on the evolutionary tree and wondering what the big deal is.

Whatever it is ants did it first.

    In other "news" Tucker Carlson went on "The Rogan Experience" and denied that evolution by means of natural selection explained the diversity & history of living things on earth.

    Said there was "no evidence" humans could have evolved "from a single cell organism"

    It's impossible to know if he's just saying this for attention.

    the giant Bolverk tells Skafloc,... “Many heroes have owned this sword, because it brings victory to the wielder. There is naught on which it does not bite, nor does it ever grow dull of edge. Venom is in the steel, and the wounds it gives cannot be healed by leechcraft or magic or prayer. Yet this is the curse on it: that every time it is drawn it must drink blood, and that in the end, somehow, it brings the bane of him who uses it.”
