My kid & I had a day off, so we got out the books to make up a new character he's been talking about. He noticed that the elf classes are mostly the same except for their spell lists: cleric for drow, druid for wood elves, and magic-user for the original recipe elves.

An elf with the illusionist list was conspicuously absent, so he made up cloud elves with the "magic of mist & shadows". This weekend, Ra'ul the Cloud King will try to free the "Prisoners of the Gelatinous Dome"!

This morning, as I was laying on the couch watching my son draw, I was reading a review of an adventure by Bryce Lynch. While criticizing florid prose, he wrote "Adventure writing is technical writing and has a different set of rules for how to present information." I'm inclined to agree with this statement, even though I've never really thought about it in those terms. Thoughts?

is a really good lightweight D&D alternative. I think I like it better than as it strips the system down further but not as minimalist as some others in the or space. I’m still kinda tired of class- and level-bound games though, with the usual stats, HP, AC, etc.

@signal9 I've probably spent more money on than any other game this past year (perhaps bests it, especially if you include Dolmenwood), so I have to get it to the table soon! I've been more or less waiting to get the 1e rules.

Overall, I see the attraction in the roll under mechanic for attributes, after playing some Black Sword Hack. I would like a bit more nuance to the results, so I'm pondering ways to homebrew that. But I've not played enough to be sure that I want to do that.

@Da_Gut Overall, I really enjoy roll under mechanics since they keep stats relevant. I did see one variant in an adventure by Gus L. where the type of dice you rolled changed based on the difficulty of the task. For example, a really hard task may use a 5d6 instead of a standard d20.

One of my kid's ideas: Vegan Necromancer who reanimates dead plants! Cast Speak with Dead and Speak with Plants at the same time to talk to furniture! Reanimate wooden and plant-fiber cloth objects to fight your enemies ("Your linen padding under your armor comes to life and starts grappling you!" "What?" "The ambush is coming from inside your pants!")! Turn dead trees into treant zombies!

After razing a village, your undead minions can be composted to make a nice mulch.

Had a blast this morning running a session of my game. I had to run a skirmish between 18 bandits & the PCs + some militiamen. Half the soldiers died, but all bandits died, and the leader was captured.

Has anyone had the opportunity to check out either of the recently released Old School Essentials Adventure Anthologies from Necrotic Gnome?

My kid keeps calling illusionists "illusioners", which honestly seems like a better name the more I hear it. It seems more active.

Illusionist: "I have illusions. I made them."
Illusioner: "I do illusions. I illude!"

(Looking it up, "illusion" comes from the Latin "illudere" meaning "to mock". What do they mock with their phantasms and false sensory impressions? Reality, I guess.)
