I still like "anti fascist action" but I'm a little bummed it doesn't involve feeding anyone to ants.

Cyrus ,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@futurebird The movie Empire of the Ants, when I saw it with my parents they explained that the government made a deal with the giant ants, in order to stay in power. I didn’t know whether to be more mad at the government or the ants for selling out! Turned out later that my parents were not being strictly honest about the plot of the movie.

Anyway that was some ant-y fascist action!

Much of the pro-Trump content of facebook comes from the Epoch Times. A right wing media outlet caught laundering millions in a crypto scheme.

Who is the most morally compromised of our justices? If you think it is a tie you may vote for more than one.

If you think one or more of them has vastly outstripped the others in failing to live up to their office, limit your vote to the greatest failures.

Sam Alito is so much worse than I ever suspected. Watching him speak, reading his writing you encounter a man who clearly thinks he's smarter than everyone.

For various reasons, we do not often encounter smug academically styled conservatives. But, he's the genuine article. He sincerely believes himself a brave iconoclast who will be seen as a hero someday.

His self-flattery could be a weakness. He is very wrong about how history will remember him.

Cyrus ,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@futurebird When I remember what my history books taught me in school, I regret to say he is right. Just because he should be remembered as a villain of low merit doesn’t mean he won’t have schools and libraries named after him.

Portland police chief Bob Day said in a press conference today that their goal is to detain and arrests people on the spot just to identify them and get rid of their anonymity, so that they can surveil them and keeps tabs on them and be more likely to ID them at future events / see who their social circles are. He said taking people into custody is “a tool to leverage more information, and to learn about other people.” I know we know this, but it’s harrowing to hear.

Fascism and a police state are already here, and things are only getting worse. Police across the board are more funded than ever, and in many cities their funding has increased substantially since 2020. Let’s also not forget that Biden expressed his desire to see cop cities everywhere.

Why aren't Korean rice cakes huge in the US yet? This is a simple, satisfying, not very nutritionally redeemable (so acceptable to Americans), comfort food that's basically pasta but more massive (and made of rice) or the tougher, more awesome cousin of "white bread"

Now that it's possible to make it shelf stable and easy to boil... what is the hang up?

Food Solid No.1 Should rule the world.

Cyrus ,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@futurebird The first time I had tteokbokki I was like “these are rice cakes? Hmm I guess they are dense wads of rice flour… like a cake of soap…” I had it a couple more times later on, and I’m not a fan. But I can see kids preferring it over whole rice.

Which of the following did you feel most often growing up? If you were "an almost only child" eg you had siblings but they were much older or younger... or you had siblings but didn't grow up with them most of the time answer as if you were an only kid.

This is about if you had company in your family near your own age, and if you wanted more company like that or less.

Cyrus ,
@Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

@futurebird My brother was born 9 years after me, so “mostly only”. My upbringing was chaos, so I was torn between wanting siblings for company and friendship, and not wanting any more chaos. Unfortunately it all went the wrong direction.

    That said, the recent spam attacks show the need for more advanced tools for server admins and mods to share information. The call for such tools became a point of contention during the first twitter migration last year and the fediverse and mastodon missed out on the support of black users, trans users, and members of other groups targeted by bad actors due to was was perceived to be unresponsiveness and "free speech absolutism" by some of the big players.

    Cyrus ,

    @futurebird @AcornSquashbuckler @ubergeek I agree completely and there’s some difficult levels in that. Eg in the drama around the bad space, an entire fake cultural rift was fabricated between Black and trans fedi, with accusations of transphobia or anti-Blackness whenever one argued with the other. Reactivity, hurt feelings, labels… it’s tricky.

    I really would love to see some in depth interviews with the substantial group of CO Republicans who like Trump but hate Boebert.

    I just assume it's some kind of sexism. They are so similar. But, I'm curious if they are aware of it "a woman just shouldn't be that way" or if it's just ... a unexamined gut feeling.

    I have this memory of drinking frozen OJ growing up. It came in a little paper cylinder, and you put it in a pitcher and added water then stirred and it was orange juice. There was apple juice too...

    Is that a thing anymore? What the heck was the frozen juice thing about. I can't even find it anymore.

    Cyrus ,
    @Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

    @futurebird I worked in grocery for many years, and I saw the popularity of frozen juice fall off “in real time” where I lived. At the beginning, we had to restock the freezer every day. Later it was down to a couple times a week. Eventually I started seeing product going past its expiration date. That was partly due to poor rotation, but it’s hard to rotate freezer goods when customers aren’t emptying the shelves.

    I have complex, deeply mixed and confused feelings about jargon. Part of me loves jargon. I love precise terminology, little used words, and they can be so useful. At the same time, I'm not a fan of that feeling that you would be able to understand something ... but someone piled up jargon in the way just to keep you out.

    Is there a way to thread the needle? To indulge in obscure vocabularies but avoid gatekeeping?

    Cyrus ,
    @Cyrus@zirk.us avatar

    @futurebird I have to remind myself that the point of speaking or writing is to communicate with a recipient. I try to only use jargon with people who I can expect to be familiar with it. If it’s a term I have to use repeatedly, I will parenthetically explain it at the first usage.

    Thinking about judges wigs and other trappings of power.

    Apparently in Poland when they have legal court everyone wears robes: different colors for attorneys and the judge etc.

    Of course in the UK judges still wear wigs which US judges are free to wear too, but simply don't.

    On the US Supreme court it's just black robes-- Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Stephen Breyer have all tried to make skull caps happen but no one else cared.

    US Supreme Court justices only some of them bother with the skull cap.
