Could be a good tactic. But spez and his goons tend to crack down on mods that do things they don't like. Especially things that could impact revenue.

I think humans (like all animals) are fundamentally flawed for several reasons. Animals, including us, are programmed to procreate and consume and (for some species) construct things. It's all about survival and thriving. All animals all have a general "I got mine, fuck you" mindset.

We despise cancer for its brainless infinite growth programming...when our operational model is hardly different.

In short, I think we're all a bunch of selfish idiots competing against each other and other life forms. There is no greater purpose or benevolent spirit watching, much less cheering us on. Where there is life, it's just reproducing and eating and dying and repeating that cycle for as long as the local environment allows.

So no, I don't think the good in humankind will prevail. There's evidence all around that goodness is losing the battle to greed and other self-destructive tendencies. Things which are hard-wired in the human animal. Don't look up!

Is that an excuse to not even try? No, I don't think so. I think we are still morally and ethically obligated to always strive to do better and fight against that brainless animal programming. Even if goodness ultimately fails, it can greatly reduce suffering along the way. And perhaps keep the concept of a new "enlightenment" alive long enough that we do eventually figure out a way to break out of that animal programming and build some kind of egalitarian utopia. Because there is also evidence all around us of people performing selfless acts of self-sacrifice to help others.

I think the chances are very, very slim of that utopia ever happening. Because quite frankly, evil is like a force of nature and goodness is like a guy with a shovel and a plan. But I do think utopia is theoretically possible.

In short, I think it goodness will not prevail, but I would love to be dead wrong about this. I hope goodness wins.

This sounds like Pinker. I think his book was debunked, wasn't it?

Some good and encouraging stats in there. Most of which do little to undermine my position about fundamental human nature.

Article last updated in 2018. The war in Ukraine, genocide in Gaza, rising inflation, food and petroleum shortages, global warming, mass extinction of myriad species, and ascending fascism are all pulling these graphs back towards regression to the mean, I'm afraid.

The media tends to overstate these things on the crime and despair side, I will quickly admit that. But there's plenty of wishful thinking and denial coming from psychologists and sociologists (and often-cited airport books) on the other side.

Pinker and others in his camp were/are arguing that giving more power to the state helps mitigate and even reverse many of these social issues. I agree with them on this. But, the staristics and context of the underlying data is a bit dubious.

Appreciate the article. Thanks.

If Reddit had a soul/conscience, I think it was us, and we're all on Lemmy now...

As a little background, I didn't actively use Reddit for months following the blackout. I still barely stop in over there and if I do I'm never logged in our contributing to the communities there (where I was previously a daily poster/commenter)....

Reddit: bots talking to bots.

Lemmy: the socially awkward talking to the neurodivergent.

Yes! There was at least one experimental one that openly did that, and it was funny at the time. I forget the name of it. But it wasn't trying to pass itself off as real conversation to fool the shareholders.

That whole series is wonderful. Don't let the "Young Adult" label keep you away from it. If you like fantasy at all, it's some of the best ever written, IMO.

The first book was a big hit and the most immediately memorable / powerful. I think the later books stuck with me longer after reading them, though. Not as immediately entertaining / interesting as the first one, but more reflective.

I think it's possible to use it like social media and a few people do. One obvious/dumb example would be Lord Douchewad himself: spez.

However, IMHO 99.9999% of people who use it anonymously are social media adjacent, but not on social media.

I can see good arguments to the contrary. Semantics.

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

I get that same gotcha from people, too. Even if they are technically correct, they should be a good friend and acknowledge what you really meant. Flexing on Facebook or LinkedIn or whatever is very different from shitposting on here or reddit.

It's just awkward and unnecessary to have to say "verified user social media versus anonymous social media" when we can lump Meta, X, and Microsoft under Social Media as a blanket term.

I guess the blanket term for reddit and Lemmy and 4chan type sites could be "meme sites" or "link sharing sites" or whatever.

We need a cool new term for it, one that is easy to say and memorable. Fediverse is pretty cool, but only applies to a subset of those.

You can see stats on this instance by going here:

https://lemmy.world/communities

That's not all of lemmy, obviously, just lemmy.world. But it's one of the most active instances that I've found.

Here are some others, in no particular order:

In general I would say technology, politics/news, and memes/humor are the most active communities.

High quality chocolate. Most of the stuff in the local grocery stores is cheap, waxy and awful. There's a place within reasonable distance with the good stuff, but it's hella expensive.

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks! That is good to know. We have some of those around. Not on our usual rotation (a little out of the way) but this could change that. I know they have pretty good produce in there, because I have used them for that on occasion.

I've heard there's a lot of fake job postings out there. I cannot confirm this, but it would make sense in these cynical times that some slimy businesses would post them to make it look like they are growing/thriving when they have zero intention of filling those positions. They don't care that they are wasting people's time with that bullshit.

Worse, I've heard some of them use the interview tests to get free work out of applicants. Depends on the job type, obviously.

Maybe these places need an acronym, too. How about POOP: Posts Odious Online Positions. OK, I got nothin'. But I'm sure someone can do better.

Sorry, I am excitable. I do like it here, though.

Brain-inspired computing with fluidic iontronic nanochannels ( www.pnas.org )

Scientists have created an artificial synapse that works with water and salt, mimicking the medium used by our brains. This could lead to more efficient and energy-saving brain-inspired computers. The device, called an iontronic memristor, consists of a microchannel filled with water and salt, and can process complex information...

It is remarkable. He must have been wired differently.

Which is the best micro sd card company/manufacturer you can recommend ?

I don't care about speed, bigger storage, or small price difference all i want is it to not start corrupting my files randomly, die really fast, be unreliable etc . i just want something to put my files on then delete em and add something else, and forget about it and have it work for atleast 10 years . I don't really transfer...

I've had good luck with SanDisk Ultra micro SD cards in a variety of capacities.

So many options on how to handle this that don't require killing the dog.

Like a lot of gun nuts, she can't think outside of that very small box. Like a lot of gun nuts, she thinks this story makes her look like a "bad ass".

It makes her look like a trigger happy moron. Any psycho can shoot a dog. It doesn't require strength or skill. It's not impressive at all. It reveals her to be a sick POS with zero problem-solving skills.

I do hope her political career is done. I hope we stop seeing stories about her, so she can take her place in the trash can of history where she belongs.

What linguistic constructions do you hate that no one else seems to mind?

It bugs me when people say "the thing is is that" (if you listen for it, you'll start hearing it... or maybe that's something that people only do in my area.) ("What the thing is is that..." is fine. But "the thing is is that..." bugs me.)...

Boozilla ,

For a period of time on spezsite, people loved posting photos using the title "Just a (whatever the thing in the photo was)".

I don't know why, but that convention of using "just a..." started to get under my skin after a while. The fad kind of faded away, though you still see it occasionally.

It's not that there's anything wrong with titling a post in that manner. But over time, it felt like nonstop humblebragging.

I'm probably making zero sense. Pet peeves can be weird like that.

I have mostly positive vibes with "folk", like folk music, folk art, common folk, etc. But I understand where you are coming from with this. It kind of smacks of "other" in this particular context.
