come on, Brodie is not that bad

ps (i can't remember whos channel i saw this on) If you have 2 videos with the same content and the same title but one has that style of thumbnail, the one with that style of thumbnail will get promoted by the algorithm. If I remember correctly it was something huge on the engagement

Well that was almost as much of a rant as that other fellow.

what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it's a gacha. I don't want to gamble with my account being banned, so I'm keeping windows for it specifically.) this'll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues with...

I'm currently on Neon on the desktop (and macOS on the mac). On the servers it nearly all debian and a couple of BSDs

Over the last almost 25 years i've almost exclusively ran KDE when not being stuck with windows (for various reasons). Ive heard good things about Arch, but I'm getting far too old to be bothered with a semi-complex install (yes I have run Gentoo for several years, so I think it is an age thing).

I think a bit of planning wouldn't go amiss

We did well last year (and also helped aussie.zone towards the end)

I would say "Why don't these old farts just turn over and die", but they are not that much older than I am - so it cant be an age issue. This only leaves them as bigoted arseholes - I still wish that they would turn over and die

It's flowers are meant to make a nice wine/mead

Well it works well enough for my small instance, so a thimbs up from here.

I'll also point out that it was easy to configure and chang for my needs

Well done @Dave

I guess that no.lastname.nz will be 1 year in a couple of days (goes and checks, yep - on the 4th).

You have had a worse time than I have with server issues and spam, and I'm glad that you have kept it all together of the last year of very fast growth in lemmy.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

no, they were our parents, and they never let us youngins (now around 50) forget it

There is a fellow kiwi that debunks conspiracies (mostly flat earth) on youtube that has come out as trans (@Planarwalk). The utter vitriol that has been directed at her since she came out (and a little before as she at that stage tended towards effeminate) has been incredible to see. Trans people must be some of the strongest folk around.

What licence are they using? Do you know something everyone else does not?

Just because Llama Group want to control what goes into FreeLlama? Just like every other open source with a leadership?

Winamp will remain the owner of the software and will decide on the innovations made in the official version

If I release project qwtop as open source I still retain ownership of my code and make the decisions about what makes it into the main release; how is this different so far, when we haven't seen the licence?

<edit: see post below>

BlueEther ,

thanks, there was nothing about a licence with the original post that i saw

Kaikoura Earthquake

To give some perspective, parts of the Kaikoura cost had 8m vertical displacement and others were displaced 5m north

We felt it some 700km away

Problems with creating my own instance

I am currently trying to create my own Lemmy instance and am following the join-lemmy.org docker guide. But unfortunately docker compose up doesn't work with the default config and throw's a yaml: line 32: found character that cannot start any token error. Is there something I can do to fix this?...

I just wonder how up and downvoting would work since that would go very differently from Lemmy.

how so?

BlueEther ,
@BlueEther@no.lastname.nz avatar

well for me:

  • just passed 50 last month
  • been kicking around 'PCs' since the vic-20
  • buun using linux since Mandrake Helios (6.1)
  • have self hosted all sorts (including email for nearly 10 yrs, not any more other than a relay for my lemmy)
  • had a mastodon instance for about 2-3 years - but use mastodon.nz
  • spun up my instance of lemmy just as the exodus started
  • been into tinkering with electronics from childhood

I guess that puts me in the the tech group that seems very common here

other groups that seem well represented are the 'left' and lgbqt+

Five things our research uncovered when we recreated 16th century beer (and barrels) ( phys.org )

It's true that our 16th-century ancestors drank much more than Irish people do today. But why they did so and what their beer was like are questions shrouded in myth. The authors were part of a team who set out to find some answers....

Our first daughter had a old smart phone at about 8 (she has just turned 9). It doesn't have data turned on, so is more or less a dumb phone unless she is at home. I don't think her little sister could care less about getting one.

I think that it's good for her to have one as it means she can contact us if she goes up the road to her friends or park/shop.

She doesn't have it for at school or general day to day life - so it may not be the best example

and in the wes we have mink farms (europe) and mass swine and chicken farms, we also have (particularly in the Americas?) have industrial farming of beef/milk. All have the potential (and have done in the past) to do the same fast spread and interspecies transmission of diseases.

This strikes as a little anti China/Asia and 'think of the poor foxes and dogs' as why are not 'western' things to farm
