Alk ,

Thank you for this post. I was reading by and wouldn't have understood those comments unless I saw your post.

I tried revolt and... It sucks. None of my friends are on revolt. None of my bots work on revolt. Same with matrix. Matrix is horrible for large communities where discord offers inheritable permissions, forum channels, channels that only some users can see, its just not the same use case at all.

Also please link the original YouTube link. I don't like invidious, I have my own preferred frontend. Don't force people to use the frontend that you like. I use freetube, which is just as private and better for my needs. But I can't automatically open freetube if you don't link the original YouTube link. Same with people who use literally any other frontend than invidious.

Alk ,

It was the same with divinity original sin 2. The final act was so large, disorganized, and not fun. Like they had a lot of ideas they needed to use but didn't know where until then, so they threw them all in a big city and called it a day.

Alk ,

Please do, it's so good.

Alk ,

Think of it this way. You're a seasoned witcher. You know the ins and outs of fighting and of the many monsters and oddities out there. You even spent the time to make the oils.

It's just the witcher's learned instinct to apply the relevant oil when fighting a monster. It's second nature. You don't even think about it. It's how it should be, narratively speaking and this is a narrative driven game where you role play as the witcher. It may not allow for min maxing your strategy, but it makes sense and is convenient.

Now, you the player do not always remember to apply it or even do it quickly. But the witcher does. He has the muscle memory down. The witcher is always ready. And you are the witcher.

I don't even need to know where you left off in the game.

Alk ,

Despite my complaints, its one of my favorite games of all time. I highly recommend it. Let me know if you want to do a co-op run (on PC)!

Alk ,

My job didn't even require a video interview, this unpaid role has more strict requirements than half the jobs in the US haha.

Alk , (edited )

My job is also an IT job with big responsibility. I wouldn't have compared the 2 jobs otherwise. Not sure where you got filling grocery store shelves from.

Alk ,

This is likely not the best place to get answers for this question.

Alk ,

The exciting conclusion to the rug arc at last.

Alk ,

I've seen you post a lot and in a lot of places in the last few days and almost every time you do, you get down voted and there are never any comments. Why is that?

Alk ,

Thanks for the great meme, keep it up.

Is everything the worst?

I'm 43, almost 44, years old and went through a bought of alcoholism during the early part of the pandemic. I went through treatment and have been fine since. However, I can't help but feel that all the news in the last few months is just the worst. Between the AI bullshit, the wars, the effects of capitalism, and the political...

Alk ,

I recommend not watching or reading the news. Spend your free time learning about hobbies or finding new ones, getting involved in local politics instead of national/global politics, improving yourself, and finding friends in communities around your hobby.

If you want some PC gaming friends that don't talk about politics all the time, DM me. We're in our late 20's through 40's.

Alk ,

I'm not saying create an echo chamber, my advice excludes engaging with people who agree and disagree, at least when it comes to large scale politics. If someone wants to get involved in politics, I think they should avoid echo chambers and engage in good discussion. But for people who just want to or need to get away from it, disengaging entirely I think is the way to go. You can still get involved in local polics without engaging in larger politics. They often have direct impacts on your community and it varies wildly between different communities.

Alk ,

One of my favorite series of Menes.

Alk ,

I used to read more, but then video games became capable of telling captivating stories and writers and artists could share their ideas and visions directly with people in a way never possible before, and often more intimately and thoroughly than before. I'm not after the experience of reading a book, I'm after the experience of experiencing other peoples' perspectives, feelings, experiences and art. And there are mediums other than written word that do that for me. In the past, there simply wasn't enough content for other mediums to take the place of reading completely for those things.

Alk ,

More than that, it does all sorts of things that also had to be worked around.

Alk ,

I use kagi, it's very good.

Alk ,

It's disingenuous to say there's no point in striving for privacy if you're not going to go completely off grid. There are always better and worse options.

Alk ,

It depends on what you're trying to be private from. Kagi has been good to me so far, my goal is mainly to escape from corporate/ad profile tracking.

Alk ,

Same. I work and play at my computer, so I certainly get my use out of it. I wouldn't pay for it if both my work and my hobbies weren't both on my PC.

Alk ,

I haven't touched the ai feature, I'm glad its separate and not forced into search, but I'm also glad people seem to be getting good use out of it. Best of both worlds.

Qualified experts of Lemmy, do people believe you when you answer questions in your field?

The internet has made a lot of people armchair experts happy to offer their perspective with a degree of certainty, without doing the work to identify gaps in their knowledge. Often the mark of genuine expertise is knowing the limitations of your knowledge....

Alk ,

That story sounds fake, probably written by a bot.

(/s)

Alk ,

Can you explain that argument here?

Alk ,

I think this is roughly the plot to kill LA kill.

Alk ,

Them's fightin' words, nerd! Even if it is exactly correct...

Alk ,

I wouldn't say it's the biggest strain for me, that's rent. But it might be the biggest increase in price lately.

This is non-news, like all tech companies, they are bound by law to do this. It happens more than 6000 times per year for Proton. However, this user just had bad opsec. Proton emails are all encrypted and cannot be read unless law enforcement gets your password, which Proton does not have access to. Even if Proton hands over all data.

I haven't shaved since 2014.

Alk ,

That is the wildest take I've ever heard. Full beards can be presentable, professional and clean. A beard goes with a suit like peanut butter goes with jelly.

Alk ,

I use kagi too. The AI stuff isn't really a focus, I never use that feature at all. It's easy to never even notice it's there. It's a fantastic search engine.

Alk ,

Even the link is having an aneurism.

Alk ,

I have to buy a house to take care of my aging mom (long story, it's the best way I promise, I wish it wasn't), and it will be my wife and I, my sister in law, and my mom with her retirement pay all living in and paying for one house, and we still can't afford most 3 bedroom houses. Not even in a big city. It's madness. The 3 non-retirees I listed all make more than minimum wage. It's infuriating that 3 employed adults can't afford to house and take care of one single elderly person in the current state of the US.

Alk ,

That tends to happen when you get hit by an explosive.

Alk ,

It uses a standard US household wall plug (hard wired to the vehicle), and is extremely loud above 5mph.

Alk ,

Yeah, discord is for running a community not just chatting in voice.

Alk , (edited )

It is but there's just not enough content to get me to fully stop YouTube yet. YouTube still has so much long form content only on YouTube.

That being said, nebula is amazing and you all should check it out and support the creators using it.

Alk ,

At least regarding the enshittification, I've started using FreeTube to access all my YouTube content and it has completely negated all enshittification so far. It's such a great way to watch my subscriptions.

Alk ,

What is everyone's opinions on the sound quality of vinyl?

I understand the collectibility of physical media, and the novelty of owning a vinyl and the machine that plays them. The large art piece that is the case (and often the disc itself). Showing support for your favorite artists by owning physical media from them.

Those are great reasons to collect vinyl.

But a lot of my friends claim vinly is of higher audio quality than anything else, period. This is provably false, but it seems to be a common opinion.

How often have you seen this and what are your thoughts on it?

Alk ,

Also when uploading images somewhere else you can just change the file extension to png and it works most of the time.

Alk ,

Managing my blu ray library. Among other things. What are you using Linux for that isn't piracy?

Alk ,

Plus you can't arbitrarily delete them to nuke an entire website account if you wanted to.

Alk ,

Not quite the same as Proton, you have to use your own domain and set all that up, and I already mentioned the plus thing isn't an option for obvious reasons. Still good, but not quite as good.

Alk ,

thank Mr. Skeltal
