essell ,

That's last week's last week tonight 😀

essell ,

"keep going with that, it's turning me on"

essell ,

I know the tin foil brigade like to use the phrase "main stream media" so forgive me..

But it's be easy to lose sight of the fact that there's always tragedy happening in the world, it's always bad, it's always alongside other tragedy and the only way things get better is the ongoing fight against them.

The shock portrayed by the main stream media would suggest this stuff is unusual, like life is generally fine but punctuated by these horrible times and events, and that only one of them at a time matters.

essell ,

If you get power, you accept the responsibility that comes with it.

By it's nature, decision making powers that effect others come with a responsibility not to abuse that power for one's own agenda.

It's therefore right that the person who made this decision is called out for what they did, and anyone else who shared their responsibility with them.

essell ,

Like someone threw thermal paste and hormones on a barbecue

essell ,

Cold evenings with warm cat cuddles.

Don't like how unpleasant these are for much of the year

essell ,

Let's be fair to the alt-right. Oppression, racism and all their other values are also American traditions. What a great melting pot!

essell ,

For most of us, it's now just another endemic illness 🤷

Which sucks for those people who get heavily impacted due to circumstances or luck.

essell ,

From those immunocompromised people I've talked to since the pandemic, they were hoping for a cultural shift around this thanks to the increased awareness.

For a short while, so many people were afraid of a virus and perhaps understood a little better what it was like for them every day.

That has not happened from what I can see.

essell ,

I am admiring and looking up to your wit

essell ,

Can I ask that you don't take children's shoes?

It's not supportive of their developmental needs

essell ,

Do you want verrucas?

Because that's how you get varrucas

essell ,

"Why anyone would think otherwise is beyond me" - every American voter is seems.

essell ,

Generally not what happens, I can only think of one modern style democracy that does that.

essell ,

Of course, happy to expand on my point!

I mean, so far as I know, liberal is only a pejorative in the USA. Not heard it used that way in other political systems, likely because of the reasons you mentioned.

essell ,

Simple answer but... Small business

Plenty of them still about in most places

essell ,

Interesting fact about the pentagon.

It was made that shape because the land set aside for it was that shape.

After the designs were mostly done, they changed the site but kept the design mostly the same, only making it more regularly sized on the sides.

essell ,

Degrading to the valid argument. Unless it's satire, then it's funny hyperbole 😁

essell ,

This is why there's no need to lock up criminals, they're going to get old and die one day anyway

essell ,

Kinda misses the point, no?

The question needs an answer, even if the person asking also has their own questions to answer.

essell ,

Okay, yeah. If it's in bad faith I totally agree.

Still, I do have to wonder why some genocides are more important to people than others. There's a genuine question there too

essell ,

So like the English with our English heritage?

Qualified experts of Lemmy, do people believe you when you answer questions in your field?

The internet has made a lot of people armchair experts happy to offer their perspective with a degree of certainty, without doing the work to identify gaps in their knowledge. Often the mark of genuine expertise is knowing the limitations of your knowledge....

essell OP ,

Do you think those people represent the community view, or at least a significant portion of it? Or is it more like one unpleasant person who loves to argue the toss?

essell OP ,

That's more than a lack of respect for expertise, that's a lack of basic human respect.

I furiously dislike people explaining me to me.

essell OP ,

I'm impressed by your bravery in telling people that one, given the variety and origins of the "facts" on that topic! 😲

essell OP ,

I'd call it healthy debate but I've never met a software engineer who had a healthy anything

essell OP ,

Good plan. Document your expertise and them have enough rope to tie themselves in knots.

essell OP ,

That's a very reasoned and reasonable view of the question. Totally fair I'd say. Feeling a little emotionally frustrated by it today none the less.

essell OP ,

I have never experienced that world, and never heard what it's like from that side. Really appreciate your insight just because it's so different to all the "expert advice" that floats around on social media

essell OP ,

Nice, sounds like you have a lot of clarity in an analytical mind!

I do so love proof in a professional environment.

essell OP ,

That's totally fair, I agree.

The version that upsets me most is when I offer a perspective from my expertise, well founded and reasonable, and rather than ask questions to understand or offer a competing idea, people so often just say that I must be an idiot and know nothing about the topic.

I can hardly reply with "no, you're the stupid one!" coz that just really doesn't help.

essell OP ,

I assume you're there to make the tea and order stationary?

essell OP ,

I know it's a massive cliché talking about the hive mind on Reddit, but it was a cliché for a reason!

essell OP ,

That's totally fair.

I taught a seminar in the nature of identity last month. Great fun.

essell OP ,
essell OP ,

You can always checkout their point, information or perspective via other sources. Doesn't have to be about the person posting. Personally, I'd rather it wasn't.

essell OP ,

You don't get to be the boss by listening to people, in most places sadly.

essell OP ,

Are you one of the people I depend on who write useful information on the internet sharing their expertise?

essell OP ,

I've read a lot of Greek mythology but never met hypoxia. Was she one of the nymphs?

essell OP ,

Honestly, I'm a little envious. being able to see those stories and make an informed clear judgement would be really valuable for me

essell OP ,

I hope one day when countries start passing laws banning children from the internet or smartphones, it includes the people like this

essell OP ,

Who me?

essell OP ,

I've never been royalty before. Flattered!

essell OP ,

That would very much depend on whether you work for Boeing or not, I guess.

essell OP ,

Promise not to hold you responsible for all the recent stuff
