Contra Reforged Turns Konami's '80s Classic Into A Third-Person Shooter | Time Extension ( www.timeextension.com )

The iconic run-and-gun shooter, Contra, is now reimagined in a third-person perspective with the release of Contra Reforged by homebrew developer Retrolead. This modern take on the classic game retains its retro graphics and difficulty level while offering unique features such as an auto lock-on mechanism that eliminates the...

I thought this was going to have a Debbie does Dallas link instead of the dark place it went.

Albbi ,

The water does have a blur. It's just a pretty calm day and it's a gentle stream. As for no blur on the guy, maybe he had an assistant?

Albbi ,

Oh man, the original story was awful. The fact that she never really recovered is heart breaking.

Albbi ,

Why don't you switch to shorts if you were out in the heat? I just go without any pants if it's relaxing time at home.

Albbi ,

It took so long for the movie to be released on VHS that I bought the book and read it 2 times in a row when I was in grade 7.

I reread it again recently and realized that Nedry was a pioneer in my current field of Bioinformatics. It talked a lot more about him and the work he had to do as well as why he was open to corporate espionage. The computer problems he had to tackle was amusing to read about especially as our computers are so much more advanced today. "You can't analyze DNA using a computer. The molecule is just too big!"

Albbi ,

The italics were almost enough to show the sarcasm. A true believer would've used THIS TO SHOW THEIR EMPHASIS.

Albbi ,

Don't forget about the banning of indoor smoking in public places. God the 90's were a horrible time for that although it was winding down.

Albbi ,

Do you get sick of the same songs and how do you combat it?

If I find myself overplaying certain songs, I sometimes have to force myself to take a break because when I don't, I usually end up ruining/disliking the song. I hate when this happens because perfectly good songs that I love end up irritating me because I have heard it too much. Do you stop listening to those songs or just play...

Albbi ,

I dive hard into certain artists when find a song I like, but I find that my interest will naturally shift to other artists. For example, in 2022 Spotify put me in the top 0.01% for Seamus Kennedy because I found a funny song about a "greusome" moment. But I only occasionally listen to him this year. Right now I'm on a Dua Lipa binge because she put out a new good song with a hot music video. Never really gave her a chance before because I thought it was a weird band name. If I get bored and haven't found anything new I'll dive into something older too. Got on a Vengaboys and Limp Bizkit kick lately too.

I was kinda hoping ParabolicMotion would show up to this thread.

That was a lot of fun to watch. I had no idea what changes would happen when PI was modified.

I extracted that link from the video that talks about non-euclidean geometry in games.

You don't happen to use this username on Steam, do you?

Albbi ,

I had a friend who used the same name. Doesn't seem like a common name so I thought I'd check.

Albbi ,

Damn, I instantly recognized that as the Death font from discworld.

Albbi ,

Well actually it is a font. A font is a variation of a typeface. So we can all pick a different typeface to see, and the font is a style that's applied. So small caps is a style like bold is a style.

Albbi ,

Oh no, be careful here. Your old cpu uses the LGA 1150 socket type. You probably can't find any recently manufactured motherboards that target that socket type.

When new CPU architectures are released, the socket type is usually changed as well and they're not always compatible with older versions.

My usual rule is that when upgrading the mobo or CPU, always upgrade the other as well.

Anyone wanna Tell Me Why I should bother adding this to my account? snicker snicker

Albbi ,

Oh wow, I haven't seen this one in a while. Good necromancing.

Albbi ,

I wonder what was in the cool Y2K survival kit.

Albbi ,

I dunno, with the American system you have like 2 year long campaigning cycle for president. There's almost no break and it's exhausting. In Canada when an election is called the campaign is only about 6 weeks give or take a week.

Also, if the government becomes dysfunctional, it can be dissolved and a new government elected. The US system doesn't allow for that flexibility.

Albbi ,

It's really different though. The politicians are expected to be working at the national capitol during normal sessions. While they are 'campaigning' in that they'll be trying to score sound bites and such for the media, they're not allowed to spend money on regular campaigning until the election season starts.

How many rallies for president haver been held already with the election still 166 days away? How much money spent? It's utterly exhausting.

Albbi ,

It is some comfort to know that. It was almost too late when I took my cat to the vet when he got cancer or some sort of digestive tract blockage. I still feel bad for how quickly his health fell at the end, but cherish the last night I had with him. Didn't help that I had to call the ambulance for my wife that night as well. When we have events in my family we try to get them all at the same time. My wife was fine, just wasn't a good idea for her to have a shower while sick.

Anyway, sorry for your loss. It hurts to lose a loved one.

Albbi ,

This is why I love having a "Trump" filter on my Lemmy feed. I get my news in meme form first, then I get to remove the filter to see what dumb shit has been going on before sighing and putting it back.

Giant Hail Is the Weather Threat Keeping Insurers Up at Night ( www.bloomberg.com )

As the climate has warmed, there’s been an increase in the ingredients that make up hail storms: more instability in the atmosphere and stronger updrafts. The altitude in the atmosphere where water freezes has also been rising because of the warmer weather. This means that small hailstones often melt before they hit the...

Albbi ,

Ooh, mount some turbines on them as well!

Albbi ,

Yes, but could he use brain worms as an excuse?

Albbi ,

Oh there's much closer to home issues than wildfire on certain areas. Children's IQ are dropping from 'new car smell'.

Albbi ,

This is great. Coolguides is one of the best lemmy communities.

This reminds me a bit of Malcom Gladwell. He agrees to participate in a public debate without having any debate skills but since it was a topic he cared very much about and thought there's no way anybody could be against it he'd win easily.

Anyway, he had enough humility to talk about getting destroyed in the debate on his podcast. Biggest swing in opinion in the long running series' history. The episode talked about learning how to debate, which is something I always avoided to do myself. Learning to debate and keeping emotions out of it was very important and seem like excellent skills to learn.

Very interesting result but it's sad reading about having a 9 month old baby's brain tissue being cut up into 2-3mm chunks. I didn't know that brain tissue extraction was used to treat seizures. With the retraction of some papers in China due to ethics of samples being taken from unwilling minority groups I was hoping to see a bit more about where the samples came from in the paper.

Albbi ,

Disney is dead. You'd have to freeze the brain with the chemical described in the paper protecting the tissue, otherwise tissues become mush when thawed.

Albbi ,

Never heard of garden path sentences before. Very neat! I loved the examples on the Wikipedia page.

Eg. The old man the boat.

It's so short and I love it as the first example.

Albbi ,

My first thought was 'zombie work' was a phrase for a job where you don't have to think at all while doing it. Say a factory job like picking up rolls of tape and putting them in the tape dispenser.

Albbi ,

I have a friend with that type. He said he mostly sees shades of red. Graphs and charts are very hard for him to interpret.

Albbi ,

Reminds me of The Offspring song "Walla Walla". (Had this album and had no idea this song was called Walla Walla)

You started to run but didn't get far

'Cause under your arm was a VCR

Albbi ,

This plotline made me never even think of cutting my own hair until the middle of the pandemic. Now I know I'll never cut my hair again.

I've been around the AMR space for a while, but only as a collaborator. Have helped do some bacterial assemblies and help find methods of detecting ICE. I'm a bioinformatician so I get to jump onto a bunch of different projects.

AMR is scary and not really in the public knowledge of upcoming issues. I think about it every time my son had an infection while he was very young and hope he didn't get a resistant strain.

Albbi ,

There was a paper back in December about a new class of antibiotics being discovered thanks to the use of Deep Learning.

This looks like a decent writeup about it, the paper itself is not open access

This is very welcome as it has been a long time since the last new class of antibiotics was discovered. Here's a good paper that talks about the timeline of antibiotics

It's been a little while since I took the AMR course, so I'll let the papers speak for themselves instead of trying to quiz myself here on Lemmy.

Albbi ,

I downvoted you at first because I thought there's no way that's true, but looked it up. I figured there'd be a different umbrella term.

Albbi ,

The camera guy was using a cell phone to record security camera footage. He wasn't sitting there watching it happen.

Looks to me like forceps used to pull babies out by their heads during tough births.

I always appreciate your posts when I see them.
