AchtungDrempels OP ,

This is a very recent development, i don't know what's going on, haha. I guess it's just campsite cats being used to walk into tents, but i have been camping a lot and never had this happen before.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Oh yeah, i am a total cat magnet :)

A lemmy user wished me a lot of interesting animal encounters and i have been on a crazy run, not just with cats.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

My edit? I don't remember correcting a typo, only adding the cats' name. I fear i am also not getting it, really no idea how "car distribution" links to any of this

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Ah, ok. I did know about birbs but not cars. Just happened to stumble into the catosphere in the last days :)

AchtungDrempels OP ,

This is not how it goes usually. I have been on a lot of campsites, and never has anything like that happened before. Both those cats i think were very interested in getting onto people. The first one, as i left, jumped onto me when i wanted to pet her for good byes, then went onto my back, haha. Another guest helped me remove it, as she was clawing into my windbreaker jacket.

The second cat like i said had already jumped onto me as i was sitting there.

In the tent they were both mostly on top of me, the first one later got off as she stayed much longer.

I think there is a very good chance at both those mentioned campsites that this could happen. I assume on the second it will almost be guaranteed, haha.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Oh yeah, this is an official campsite. I'm sure she just belongs here. She just went outside for a minute but came back in.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Sun's out, she's gone now. My tent again :) Hope she'll be back in the evening though, we could listen to some audio book or something.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

I just asked the madame of the camping, it is the camping cat. There's also another one. She said Kyra was very friendly :)

AchtungDrempels OP ,

She belongs to the camp site.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

The woman who runs the camp site did.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

There was just somebody downvoting every comment that was here, nothing personal :)

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Must be the irresistible smell of being on a months long cycling / camping trip :)

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Know where this was?

At "camping des thermes" in bagnères-de-luchon, france.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

It's a beautiful area! Love it here.

AchtungDrempels ,

Happy cake day! Thank you so much for your service.

AchtungDrempels ,

Hell yeah, birds. When you get to know the songs of birds it opens up a deeper way of hearing too. And you get a lot better at spotting them. Birds are amazing.

AchtungDrempels OP , (edited )

Hey thank you so much for the tip. I was riding (i am on a cycling trip) up there from st jean pied de port along the D18 but didn't go to larrau but rode the d18 until it ended, then crossed to the spanish side. The photo is taken by a refugio, about 2 km below the larraineko mendatea on the d26, spanish side.

Yesterday i already rode out of irati and the basque country and i crossed into aragón and the valles occidentales natural park.

esit: photo is from sunday evening

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Oh yeah, i am totally loving it. My original plan was to stay more on the french side on this bit, but i thought south side = sunny side, as the weather was kinda on the colder and cloudier side. I'll probably be back in france by tomorrow evening so i can hopefully ride the famous cols before the weekend with all the motorbikers :)

I made a write up of the first two days of the pyrenees section of my trip in the !bicycle_touring community and i will update the topic as i make my way towards the mediterranean cost, if you are interested.

AchtungDrempels ,

Just the city you live in would be enough ;)

AchtungDrempels ,

"Utility cyclists" are severly underrepresented in the online cycling world because they don't really care about bikes.

AchtungDrempels ,

I went to sleep being all drunk. I turned on a light switch and to my surprise i found myself in the staircase of the building i lived in, wearing underpants only, the door to my appartment was closed. I must have taken the wrong way after going to the toilet.

Tried to do the credit card trick to open doors with some paper i found at the letter boxes. No success.

I then went onto the street, there was a party crowd finishing their party, they were all hyped to meet me and thought it was really funny. Nobody of them was able to do the credit card trick though. They then called a key service for me, who then opened the door and i got back to bed.

Looking for advice on turning a mountain bike into a cargo bike

I've been riding the same Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo Mountain Bike since my uncle found it in a sandpit and gave it to me to ride while away on my first internship. It was in somewhat rough shape back then, and it's kind of the bicycle of Thesius at this point as parts failed and I found ways to replace them....

AchtungDrempels ,

There are also handlebar mountable baskets, klickfix for example. I have klickfix adapters for all my bikes, currently not using it on my touring bike, but i did for a lot of tours. They're not the most stylish baskets, but i like the easy possibility do dismount it and go shopping with it or whatever.

Except on my citybike i have a fixed basket that is mounted to the head tube.

Something like this might work with your fork. Front baskets are really nice to have imo.

AchtungDrempels ,

Amazing. For a split second i thought it was mirrored in water or something.

AchtungDrempels ,

With recent events hilighting the value of quality moderation

What happened?

AchtungDrempels ,

I've been using a stainless steel one from "mühle" for about 25 years now. I don't know what should ever break on it tbh, just three pieces of stainless steel.

Mine is "travel size", don't remember why i bought this, but in hindsight i totally like that i did, saves weight and volume travelling. And i am completely used to it this way, was my first safety razor, so i had to get used to something new anyway and i'm glad that's what i went for.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

I probably should have said where i am located, it's in Düsseldorf, Germany. Regulus regulus should be around where i live too, according to my local bird book, but i have not seen one yet, i am quite certain it must be the child of Carduelis carduelis, European Goldfinch, the older ones are all over the feeder:

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Yeah that's what i thought, looks just like a goldfinch just no red face yet.

Discoverability of communities across instances

If the spirit of the fediverse is to spread everything across small instances, then i think it would be really important to make communities, especially niche communities, easier to discover across instances. Since it is not planned to crawl federated instances community catalog, i think instance admins, or maybe even the lemmy...

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Thanks for the trendingcommunities tip, subscribed it. It uses the lemmyverse crawler, so that is really good.

The problem with the mbin "random C's" is, i guess, that it'll only ever show c's which are already being federated, so already discoverable from the internal search.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

It's not even 50 instances on there though, and almost half of them seem to be disabled. Not just .world, also .ml, slrpnk, feddit.de - that is a huge chunk of the lemmyverse. I don't know if that is the solution, certainly not as it is now.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Isn’t that issue about crawling content?

I don't think so. Dessalines even suggest one should rather use f.e. lemmyverse to search for not-yet-federated communities, but how does a lemmy user even find out about services like this?

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Yeah, it is certainly better than nothing, that is absolutely fair, and probably makes a lot of sense to use for people who can.

Sadly i can't, because "my" community is on .world. I used a similar "relay" type thing some time ago, but not sure how well it worked.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

Yeah, i also don't think it's pointless.

Those instances opting out (if they did) probably has a good reason.

I just think it would be good to point users to some kind of crawler that knows all the communities. Searching communities under "all" from within lemmy is almost misleading. I feel like it mainly also affects smaller instances and communities.

AchtungDrempels OP ,

I just saw that at least lemmy.world and lemm.ee actually do actually point users to a crawler from their "Getting started / Lemmy guide" which is cool, but also quite easy to miss. Anyway, good job .world and lemm.ee!

AchtungDrempels ,

Yes the 0.19.4 upgrade happened.

And.. what does this mean? Something bad will be introduced with 0.19.4?

AchtungDrempels ,

Are you talking about the current release then, 0.19.3?

AchtungDrempels ,

I am also feeling a bit uneasy with how the world team seems to throw their weight against the lemmy devs. I don't know any deeper reasoning other than what was discussed openly on lemmy, so who knows if it may be rewarded.

Seeing sunaurus chime in on the supposedly toxic development environment etc. made me feel a lot more sympathetic to the lemmy devs and gave me a different view other than (some of) .world's obvious animosity. The discussion between the beehaw guys and the lemmy devs only reinforced that tbh, although of course here i also might have not all the knowledge to come to a fair conclusion.

All in all i found sunaurus to be the most transparent and sober in his takes, i will take SorteKanin's advice and start using my lemm.ee account more now.

the .world scraper discord bot

What was that all about, i saw it mentioned before but have no idea what happened?

AchtungDrempels ,

I reckon it's less people not understanding, and more not to want to give up their account history.

AchtungDrempels ,

If people are really angry at their instance i'd guess they would like to delete their account, not keep it around. But yeah probably more an emotional than a rational thing, still a thing though.

I definitely noticed you changing instances all the time :) I personally would rather have a home base that i'm happy with and not change all the time.

AchtungDrempels ,

Just wanted to say that i am really thankful that you at lemmy.world had open doors when others couldn't cope with the signups last summer, and i was also very happy being on lemmy.world, i always had the impression that you want the best for your users. But i am also irritated by the animosity towards the lemmy devs, and after seeing that f.e. sunaurus apparently is able to have a constructive relation with them, the behaviour or claims of some of the world team seems really odd to me. I have no knowledge about what's going on at admin / dev level, i am just a user, so i can only go with what i can read here on lemmy.

Thank you again for all that you guys did!
