I'm always pleased to see #YouTube creators who keep churning out over a period of years a series of many nicely done, long-form videos that are obviously an immense amount of work. And they continue posting these right up to the present, even though their view counts mostly never exceed 10K on any of them. (Of course, all manner of YT trash videos accumulate 100s of 1000s or millions of views.)
These creators are clearly creating for the joy of creation alone.
In a world of largely garbage media focused entirely on the eyeball counts, it's reassuring to see that some creators are still in the sunlight.
Really pissed at #Youtube today because it gives me a new layout for the main page with smaller thumbnails and more ads. The videos now show 5 columns instead of three. This is a big Fuck You to content creators (including myself). On my large monitor, I see 6 columns and some rows with two goddamn ads in them. #enshittification
from #YouTube #RashidKhalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at #Columbia gave this blistering speech about the university’s crackdown on pro-#Palestine protesters on May 1, 2024.

Students in #Cuba Stand with US Student Encampments for #Gaza
Hundreds of students gathered at the University of #Havana to condemn the police repression of US student protesters and show their support for #Palestine. On the same steps, students were repressed by the Batista dictatorship in the 1950s.
#Meta should just offer people in #Europe (& the rest of the planet) a simple option: either opt in to have your personal information sold to advertisers, or pay a fee to use #Facebook, #Instagram, #WhatsApp & #Threads.
It works for #YouTube (I pay them to avoid ads), as well as other news organizations. It’s really that simple.
Some people get replies and just do not engage at all....
Like, what is the point of posting to social media if you're not even gonna be SOCIAL?!?🤦♂️
Especially Fedi, cause it's not like we have some dumb ad service that pays you for views...You ain't making money here unless you're posting off-platform links to buy stuff.
I just don't get it. It's social media. Not "shout to the void and ignore everyone" media.🙄
If you want to see a case study on parasocial relationships, check out the online sturm und drang about Watcher Entertainment leaving YouTube and starting their own subscription-based streaming service. Now, I've enjoyed their videos over the years, but not enough to subscribe, so I mentally wished them well and moved on. But holy hell, check out social media and you'll find it filled with rage over this perceived economic, ideological, and very personal betrayal.
I had literal flashbacks to previous online discourse surrounding "creators should get paid, but not like that," and how everyone is suddenly an expert on online economics (it doesn't help that other YT content creators, perhaps smelling blood in the water, have added their voice to the chorus in search of those sweet, sweet clicks), and how YouTube is good actually, and paying people what they're worth is bad.
And yes, while having to pay for stuff that was previously free does kind of suck, this is ridiculous. Also, it hasn't escaped my attention that much of the fandom has spent the last couple of days vilifying one of the Asian-American co-founders of Watcher (including literal Yellow Peril tropes too) while exonerating the white guy co-founder...
Today in a Privacy community a post about YouTube. No word about privacy but all about which software or settings are needed to watch videos and the money needed to host videos. It made me wonder whether some of you can lead a meaningful life without YouTube. Or will a cold turkey bring the worst out of you ?
I have an extension that can individually disable all the most useless/addicting components of the Youtube site, such as shorts and whatnot. On the search page, I have turned on:...
NewPipe/PipePipe-like app for Linux?
Any YouTube client that doesn't track me that works on Linux or in Firefox?
Can you live without YouTube ?

Youtube is now unusable without a frontend ( lemmy.world )
