"Police were pushing into the camp after an hours-long standoff. Chan, 31, a medical tent volunteer, said protesters limped in with severe puncture wounds, but there was little hope of getting them to a hospital through the chaos outside. Chan suspects the injuries were caused by rubber bullets or other 'less lethal' projectiles, which police have confirmed were fired at protesters."

If you needed long-term care, could you afford it?
For many Americans, especially those with a middle-class income and little savings, the answer to that question is absolutely not.
Washington state has done the most so far to make it accessible, but this November, state residents will vote on whether to make paying the program tax voluntary – which would essentially kill the statewide insurance program.
Philips Agrees to Pay $1 Billion to #Patients Who Say They Were Injured by Breathing Machines
The proposed settlement will effectively end more than 700 #lawsuits filed after the 2021 recall of millions of the company’s widely used sleep apnea devices and ventilators.
Mike Luckovich's cartoon commentary on the tragic situation women in "pro-life" solidly red states now face when it comes to healthcare needs and anti-abortion laws.
“'Leave it to the states' is the kind of messaging anti-abortion activists and their judicial helpmates love: It sounds clean, neat, reasonable. But when states enact near-total bans, when the federal government somehow loses its authority to block those bans even when they threaten women with serious illness — as Idaho is pushing for here —"
"the reality for all to see is women bleeding out in emergency rooms, pregnant women loaded onto helicopters, doctors sitting back and watching patients writhe in pain until death is closer.
That’s a reality the right-wing justices tried their best Wednesday to both perpetuate and paper over."
My daughter had oral surgery costing >$4k, >3 months ago.
I had to pay for it up-front, out-of-pocket. The surgeon's office was supposed to bill insurance.
They billed the primary insurance, which rejected the claim as expected, but the way all this works it still had to go to them first.
Two months later the surgeon still hasn't billed the secondary insurance.
We're lucky: we can afford to float >$4k for months. People who can't don't get needed #healthcare or go into a debt spiral. #insurance
"The oral arguments over Idaho’s abortion ban and whether it trumps federal law that requires hospitals to give pregnant patients emergency medical case may have marked a new low for this court.
It was so bad that even Justice Amy Coney Barrett said she was 'shocked' by the position Idaho was taking."
"Most, if not all, of the states that have severely restricted abortion since Dobbs have seen huge numbers of obstetricians leave their states. A nationwide shortage of gynecologists and obstetricians makes the exodus even more dire. Idaho has lost 22% of its OB-GYNs since 2022. A term has been coined to describe this unforeseen phenomenon: maternity care deserts."
"Almost 7 million American women now have low or no access to maternal health care — that includes an estimated 500,000 births. In the United States. In 2024."
"The risk of stating plainly what Idaho argued at the US supreme court on Wednesday morning is that it is so sadistic and extreme that people might not believe you. Idaho has one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country."
"Prohibiting all abortions at any stage of gestation, with no exceptions for rape or incest, the Idaho law allows doctors to perform abortions in cases where the life – but not 'merely' the health – of the pregnant woman is at risk.
In practice, this has wound up being a ban on abortions needed to save women’s lives…."
"The women [Supreme Court] justices spoke out about the real consequences of the [Idaho e-r abortion care] case, but the decision will likely come down to two men: Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kavanaugh."
"The women justices of the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed varying levels of skepticism about Idaho’s arguments that federal emergency room protections do not conflict with Idaho’s near-total ban on abortion — even as the state was fighting at the Supreme Court to overturn a court order that blocked its abortion ban from being enforced when the federal law would require an abortion."
The justices heard arguments in an appeal by #Idaho ofcls of a lower court's ruling that found that the 1986 US law at issue, the #EmergencyMedicalTreatment & Labor Act (#EMTALA), supersedes the state's near-total #ban in the relatively rare circumstances when the 2 conflict.
President Joe #Biden's admin, which sued Idaho over the #abortion#law, has urged the justices to uphold that ruling.
Well, changing instances here on Mastodon is quite easy. Here's my old intro for now:
I'm a #SoftwareEngineer and Engineering Manager for over 20 years, and a #guitar player for longer than that. I've had a broad career across industries, working for #StartUps , #Banks, #Government, #Healthcare. When my 6 year old found out I did some work for #NASA, she asked "Did they pay you to work there, or did you pay them?"
I'm currently focused on helping to mitigate #ClimateChange, hence the server choice. I'm really enjoying the #Fediverse and #Mastodon.
