#SouthCarolina to use #CongressionalMap deemed #unconstitutional #SCOTUS heard arguments on the redistricting case in Oct but has yet to rule🤬, essentially running out the clock for the #2024election. A #federal#court ruled Thurs that time had run out to draw a new congressional district in #SC & said the state could use its existing map even though it had earlier determined that map was unconstitutional.
Last yr the panel…found the map illegally split neighborhoods in the #Charleston area to make #NancyMace’s race easier. The new lines constituted a #RacialGerrymander that “exiled >30k African American citizens from their previous district,” the panel found.
In arguments before #SCOTUS in Oct, attys for #SouthCarolina argued that lawmakers had not relied on race to draw maps in violation of the #Constitution. Rather, they used #political info to decide…, they said.
#MarilynLands, a Dem who made #ReproductiveRights a centerpiece of her campaign in deeply #conservative#Alabama, won a special election to the Alabama Legislature.
Lands’ victory in the suburban district in the #DeepSouth state was celebrated by #Democrats who have attempted to portray the state #GOP as too extreme on #abortion & reproductive rights.

“You must have understood the impact of your words” Schiff said & accused Hur of injecting “your own personal #prejudicial#subjective opinion of the president, one you knew would be amplified by his #political opponent. You had to understand that & you did it anyway”
#Hur, the special counsel, who is appearing …at the request of… #JimJordan, has arranged to resign from the #DOJ …one day before he is scheduled to appear….
“That makes it even more problematic...if he was still a federal employee, #DOJ would have to approve his #testimony & they’d be involved in his appearance,” they said.
In addition to the timing of his departure raising alarms…, sources have also been alarmed by #Hur’s choice of assocs during the lead-up to his appearance.
In preparing for the hearing, #RobertHur has turned to William Burck, a veteran DC atty w/deep ties to the #Republican#political establishment to serve as his counsel….
#Burck is a fmr federal prosecutor who served …as an Asst US Atty in SDNY. But he left the dept in 2005 for a position in the White House, where he served as a Dpy Counsel to then-president George W #Bush, then later as a Special Counsel to Bush & a dpy WH Staff Secy.
Though he has been in private practice since Bush left office in 2009, Burck has retained ties …& remains well-connected in #Republican#political circles.
