Some featured creatures from yesterday at MNSA, NY
6.22.24

Yellow-crowned Night Heron perched on a snag. Smaller heron with blue-gray, mottled upper, buffy lower, white forehead and black and white lateral face markings. Slight yellow tinge to frontal plumage. Strong, sharp black bill.
Seaside Skimmer dragonfly, the only dragonfly to lay eggs in salt-water. Colors change over the season, but this early arrival has a yellow and black banded and black-tipped abdomen and a blue-black head and thorax.
American Oystercatcher standing on a matt of algae at low tide, holding a small crab. Black and white upper, light lower, black head with yellow eyes. Long, slightly recurved, orange bill.

I think this is a band-winged dragonlet (Erythrodiplax umbrata), perched on the tip of one of our obedience plants in the front garden yesterday evening.

From an early morning encounter with a dragonfly sporting some excellent camouflage.

It hummed like a motor until warmed up enough to take off. You can see its left eye had taken some damage.

Close up dorsal view photo of a brown-black dragonfly with blue and green markings. The dragonfly is perched on the bark of a mossy, lichen-encrusted tree trunk and blends in quite well. Its wings are nearly invisible, only its large compound eyes are easy to spot. The left eye has a small dent in it.
