This Saltmarsh Sparrow's nest was inundated by a spring tide. The Marine Nature Study Area director showed me a photo of the lone surviving chick, which was just old enough to scramble up a Phragmites stalk and keep its head above water and then make its way into a Phragmites patch near a footpath. For days afterward, the mother could be seen flying back and forth between foraging spots and the chick's refuge with insect larvae. This species is considered endangered precisely by the double-whammy of rising sea-level due to climate change and habitat loss.

Ruddy Turnstone, a shorebird patterned like a Calico Cat.
Yellow-crowned Night Heron in profile. A small heron with a blue-grey body and black and white banded head, with a yellow tinge to its forelock and a long plume arising from the rear of its head.
Osprey, a large fish-eating hawk, perched on a snag. Body is mostly dark brown with some white on the underside and head and a black mask.

A few migratory warblers in la Cienaga de Zapata, Cuba, taken in March. The Black-throated Blue, Northern Parula and American Redstart were probably almost ready to migrate north at that time.



"Northern Parulas are small wood-warblers with a short tail and a thin, pointy bill. They are plump little warblers about the size of a kinglet. Adult male Northern Parulas [like this one] are bluish gray overall with a yellow-green patch on the back and 2 white wingbars. A chestnut band separates the male's bright yellow throat and chest. Adult females are a bit paler and typically lack the male's breast band. Males and females have distinctive white eye crescents. Immature birds are paler than adults and lack the chestnut breast band." (AllAboitBirds).
The American Redstart warbler is "a medium-sized warbler with a relatively wide, flat bill and fairly long, expressive tail. In flight it has a deep chest, slim belly, and long, somewhat club-shaped tail. Adult male American Redstarts [like this one] are mostly black with bright orange patches on the sides, wings, and tail. The belly is white. Females and immature males replace the orange with yellow or yellow-orange. They have gray head and underparts, with olive back and wings and dark-gray tail.

"Black-throated Blue Warblers are small, well-proportioned birds with sharp, pointed bills. Compared with other warblers, they are fairly large and plump. Males are midnight blue above and white below with black on the throat, face, and sides. Females are plain grayish olive overall, although some individuals have blue tints on the wings and tail. Both sexes have a characteristic small white square on the wing, sometimes called a “pocket handkerchief.” (AllAboutBirds).

    Cabrerita de la Ciénaga/Zapata Sparrow (Torreornis inexpectata), a Cuban endemic found only in the Zapata wetland and a couple of other isolated spots, is considered threatened due to its restricted range and ongoing habitat fragmentation. Subspecies of this bird live in varying wetland terrestrial habitats, including sawgrass, wooded and shrubby areas and even areas of thorny shrubs and cacti. Diet varies seasonally, but they will feed on seeds and flowers, insects and other small invertebrates, and even small lizards.

    Two Cuban Anoles, left, the Cuban Knight Anole (Anolis equestris) and right, the Western Giant Anole (Anolis luteogularis). Both are considered giant anoles (~19 cm in snout-vent length, with a tail longer than that). Males slightly larger than females. Both are Cuban endemics, although A. equestris has been introduced into Florida, while A. luteogularis is only found on the western end of the island. The Anolis radiation provides a classic case of adaptive radiation with convergent evolution on the many Caribbean islands. Unrelated species (not sharing common ancestors possessing their traits) have evolved with very similar body forms to fill similar ecological niches on each island. These are categorized as "ecomorphs." Both A. equestris and A. luteogularis are "Crown-giant ecomorphs," since they prefer the higher limbs of tall trees.The A. luteogularis, which is noticeably moulting, was basking on a ladder at a tourist bar near a mojote , and allowed me to approach quite closely before extending its gular pouch (last photo), whereupon I backed up a bit to give it some space.

    To start off with (mostly avian) fauna of Cuba, an endemic species, the Cuban Black Hawk or Gavilán de Batista (Buteogallus gundlachii) is an endemic Accipiter hawk about the size of a Cooper's Hawk that favors crabs in its diet.     We really need to stop buying into the argument that are "radical" or "destructive". The opposite is true: the nature of the protests have been peaceful and, on the whole, pretty tame.

    The idea that, say, sitting on a road is "radical", "extreme" and "criminal" came from a bunch of aligned think tanks, parroted by the media.
    Reject them.

    The framing needs to be: Fossil fuel companies are radical, extreme, criminal.
