I hear that 2020 was difficult and traumatic for a lot of people. But for me, and I suspect for many of us who are still Covid-cautious, this year has been the most difficult year yet.

Not only are few people still wearing masks, but mask bans are now happening. Public areas are more and more dangerous, and mask-wearers are now being viewed as criminals.

Family are less and less tolerant of what they now view as subversive behavior from those of us who don’t want to gather together without mitigations.

As more years pass, waiting on medical care becomes impossible, and the likelihood of needing to take the major risk of visiting medical, dental, eye care and other facilities becomes greater. And now with the added risk of even healthcare providers not masking.

This is the hardest year by far. My patience for those talking about the trauma of 2020 has waned.

The US government is ending the program that provides free COVID vaccines to people who are uninsured and underinsured.

This is a public health failure that will further decrease already low vax rates, and puts marginalized communities at greater risk.

It's ridiculous that most Democrats are just watching passively as Republicans are passing mask bans. In states where Democrats hold power, they should absolutely be passing laws that codify and protect people's rights to wear a mask.

Some good health news: an effective, universal vaccine will likely be developed for :

"The first pan-coronavirus ("universal") vaccine Phase 1 clinical trial results are encouraging for eliciting broad sarbecovirus, variant immune response.

We haven't seen this in people before:

Individuals vaccinated with SpFN/ALFQ had robust
cell-mediated and antibody responses against multiple clade 1 sarbecoviruses."

Seems an example of natural selection at work, honestly.

"The Raw Milk Institute called the warnings "clearly fearmongering." The institute's founder told the LATimes his customers are specifically requesting raw milk from H5N1-infected cows."

Today, I was asked about effective air cleaners, because wildfires have already begun to flare in North America.

Extensive global testing has found that a DIY will outperform almost every commercial HEPA unit while costing less to run.

For the US & Canada, the best source of filters to build one is Costco: Filtrete 1900, 2200, or 2500 models with at least one 20-inch dimension.

These units also help mitigate allergens and infectious aerosols like and Influenza.

Do you know what killed more than 19,000 Americans in the last 3 months? Covid. About 9 an hour. Many many more than that have been hurt, often permanently.

That’s a lower number than previously, yet the risks remain.

Stay home when ill, wear masks in crowds and inside, stay up to date on your vaccinations and improve ventilation (ex: opening windows) to stay healthier.

…But Dr. Ho has conducted early lab tests in cells that suggest that slight differences in KP.2’s spike protein might make it better at evading our immune defenses and slightly more infectious than JN.1.”

US Department of Health and Human Services is proposing a new rule requiring hospitals to electronically report cases of respiratory illness such as COVID-19 on a weekly basis, even in the absence of a declared public health emergency.

I got another booster a few days ago. Tomorrow I will order another batch of N95 masks for my family. I will continue to get COVID boosters and continue to wear N95 masks for as long as they're available until and unless something meaningful is actually done about this ongoing pandemic so many seem eager to pretend isn't ongoing. I expect to mask in public spaces for the rest of my life.
