I spent four hours on Murphy Dome in Fairbanks yesterday - counting and photographing over 30 species of blooming wildflowers! It might be a record for me. I'll post a blog post with a photo of each and the full tally in the next few days. If you want a sneak peek at the photos, check out my Recent Photos Gallery here: https://photos.lwpetersen.com/Recent-Photos
In 1953, during a particularly corrupt period in Fairbanks police history, Chief Ray Skelton killed 2 inmates by starvation/neglect & fired half the force for not obeying him. During the accompanying feud with the city council, Skelton ran an ad in Daily News-Miner inviting "THIEVES, THUGS, BURGLARS AND MURDERERS" to "ransack the town." #alaskahistory#alaska
Hiya! I'm Cris, 40+, and living in #Alaska. Married with 3 cats, 2 kids, and a dog.
I'm a knitter, gamer, and work-from-home-er. I'm also slowly teaching myself #SwiftUI in my spare time. I live in a fairly remote area so most of my closest friendships these days are long-distance.
When I'm able, I run TTRPGs (anyone looking to start a group? 👀).
I've got a lot of writing to do this week! I photographed and identified six wildflowers that will be added to add to my Alaska Wildflower Guide. Cat and I saw some interesting stuff along the lower Granite Tors trail yesterday. Hopefully, I'll have some more photos later today or tomorrow!
"Eight young #Alaska residents sued the state on Wednesday seeking to block a major gas project, the latest in a string of #climate-crisis-related #lawsuits by youths arguing that government policies promoting fossil fuels violate their rights.
The lawsuit asks the court to block the Alaska #LNG project from proceeding, and to declare that a law mandating its development is unconstitutional. "
Today in Labor History May 22, 1960: An earthquake measuring 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale, hit southern Chile. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. The massive quake lasted for 10 minutes. It caused tsunamis in Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, Australia and Alaska. In Chile, there were waves measuring over 80 feet high. 35-foot waves hit Hilo, Hawaii, devastating that state’s second largest city and killing 61 people. Between 1,000 and 6,000 people died. Over the course of two weeks, Chile experienced three earthquakes registering in the world’s ten most powerful that year.
Mom moose and twins that were born yesterday and these photos were taken not long after their arrival. Photos by Choy Mears. So much adorableness! 💗 #Alaska#AlaskaWildlife#Moosetodon#MooseBabies
At a friend's house, a newborn moose calf got "stuck" under his truck (too afraid to move) and stayed there until mom returned. Calf climbed out from under the truck and happily followed mom down the road. So much preciousness this time of year! 💗 #Alaska#AlaskaWildlife#Moosetodon#MooseBabies
Happy Earth Day 2024!
I watched this adorable red squirrel scale right up the spiky stalk of a devil's club plant at a state park in Alaska. It perched with its berries for a minute, then came back down to a little pocket of safety among the ground-level plants.

Biden administration bans drilling in nearly half of #Alaska#petroleum reserve
"The Interior Department will block oil drilling on over 13 million acres in the Western Arctic, including about 40% of the land of the NPR-A – home to protected animal species including polar bears and caribou.
The Biden administration [also] moved to block the Trump-approved Ambler road in the Alaskan wilderness, the access point for a proposed copper mine."
