🚨 Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, calls on Biden to WITHDRAW from the 2024 election. "Too much is at stake to risk a Trump victory," he says. "President Biden saved our democracy by delivering us from Trump in 2020. He must not deliver us to Trump in 2024."
@GottaLaff The “media” has a lot to be blamed for. I watched CBS News post Biden’s statement on the SCOTUS ruling. They spent a minute on what he said, and then went on to question Biden’s age / ability and repeating over and over that he was using a teleprompter. Completely ignoring the fact that the Supreme Court just overturned democracy. Its journalism malpractice and supporting fascism.
@GottaLaff Apparently some people have fallen right back into the 'Trump Amnesia' state of mind. I guess spanky didn't scare Rep. Doggett enough at the debate. That's some sense of entitlement, not being petrified of Trump back in office.
Have these people even cracked open a history book? Hell, were these people even paying attention? Doggett should at least know what happened when Lyndon B. Johnson resigned, even if he was 15 years old when that happened. (Admittedly, the age of 15 does not lend a crystal clarity to current affairs.)
@GottaLaff Feel free to call Congressman Doggett’s office. The number for the Austin office is 512-916-5921. The DC office number is 202-225-4865. The numbers are from his congressional website doggett.house.gov.
@GottaLaff He and James Carville - both old white men, and Carville in particular stuck in the 90s - are calling on Biden to step down.
Based on some things I’ve read the whole purpose of this is to replace him with someone like Gavin Newsom, who can’t use campaign funds as easily and will govern in a more right-wing way if he wins.
@MisuseCase It's so unrealistic. He has no funding, has to start from scratch, has minimal name recognition, I could go on. He also said he wouldn't run. All of this is making me nuts.
This whole discussion among elites is just so dumb.
Five minutes of research will show anyone bothering to look that Biden withdrawing in favor of anyone but Harris at this point simply isn't viable, and that even dropping out in favor of Harris is likely to end in chaos on the D side and victory on the R side.
@GottaLaff
Partial email from Biden’s campaign (I donated again last weekend):
“Folks, over 1.5 million donors like you contributed more than $264 million to this campaign last quarter. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I’m told that $38 million of that fundraising came in the four days directly following my debate against Donald Trump -- and a whopping $30 million of that came in the form of grassroots donations from people like you. I am sharing these fundraising numbers with you because they’re much more than just that.
They’re proof that what we're building together is bigger than me. It’s bigger than Kamala. It’s bigger than any one of us. You’re not just seeing it in the grassroots money we’re raising, you can feel it in the energy on the ground.
Last week, our campaign hosted nearly 4,000 grassroots events across the country -- and nearly 10,000 new volunteers took action with us! And we just kept going. After the debate, our volunteer sign up rate in battleground states increased 3x.”
@GottaLaff I won't propagate the age and excitement trend.
The man is a hardworking, results producing, economy boosting, global uniting leader. He doesn't need apologist behavior, he needs 4 more years to finally end the trump carnage
So the party splits a few months out and we get to focus on D or D+ while everything else just keeps gettin' done to-plan by Nazis who can't believe their luck in how easy it's been to take over a country by just giving us each a cell phone and using the Constitution against the Constitution.
Solid.
Nevada does not allow a candidate to be replaced after the 4th Friday of June. So there goes all votes out the window for Biden should he be replaced. No votes for Biden in Nevada would be counted towards the next candidate.
3/ Georgia allows a candidate to withdraw from the ballot 60 days prior to the election. However, no new candidate can then be placed on the ballot and all votes for the withdrawn candidate will not be counted towards a new candidate.
Wisconsin only allows for death to remove a candidate from the ballot.
4/ Then we have a plethora of states with NO laws regarding a presidential candidate removing themselves from the ballot and allowing another candidate to be placed on the ballot. You just know there are already a legion of rightwing lawyers ready to pounce into such disputes.
@Danetteb@GottaLaff Why do y’all think Trump is gonna win. Get out and vote and make sure he doesn’t. We have the popular vote. We just have to assure the swing state delegates are in place.
@GottaLaff Also, the media drumbeat about Biden withdrawing makes me wonder which adversary of the US is amplifying that message. We know that Russia amplified divisionary messages about Bernie vs Hilary in 2016 to help Trump win. We've got to stick together and stick with our current nominee.
@GottaLaff@jcrossonhill I think that the prospects for Biden winning and Trump losing actually look better than they did a few months or weeks ago and the people pushing for this really want either a Trump win or a Dem president who will be more pro-business, anti-labor, etc.
@lakelady@GottaLaff Also complicated by the mechanics of presidential elections (voting for EC electors pledged to a candidate, not candidates themselves). Presumably Biden-pledged electors could vote for the actual party nominee, if not Biden.
@GottaLaff what does this piece have to do with the info you shared about the problems with changing who is on the ballot (Nevada, Wisconsin etc.) I'm not suggesting that we do this either.
@lakelady Oh, got it. I was sharing that to drive home the point that it's exceedingly difficult and not too wise to try to get someone else on the ballot now.
The only plausible answer I’ve heard to this question is Dan Drezner’s suggestion that Biden resign the presidency now, making Harris president. Done with the support of Democratic governors and congressional leaders, and Biden’s full cooperation, it could end up being energizing. Radical, sure. (Read the piece for yourself; I don’t want to be its defender here.)
@GottaLaff Quick question: Why do these same people think the Court who just gave themselves/Pres unlimited powers will not take advantage of such a thing/circumstance? ^🤔
@GottaLaff Thanks for the information on the state laws. I don’t understand how they can have such early deadlines in Nevada. There have been years where the final candidate selections are not certain until the Democratic or Republican conventions.
@GottaLaff I’m surprised states lock down the presumed candidate prior to the party’s convention. State primary elections are much like the general election: people are voting for delegates who are charged with representing a candidate at the convention. Party rules allow the delegates to switch to a different candidate if circumstances warrant it. I wonder if Nevada has done away with the delegate system and requires their delegates to stand pat?
@GottaLaff I guess #juliancastro doesn’t understand that because he’s out spouting the same thing dog man is. We can’t win if we’re not on the ballot in every state. #Doggett is 77. Is he going to drop out of the race? I think if he can’t be a good Democrat and stick by our other candidates that he should drop out.
@GottaLaff The way I feel about it is if Biden wins and something awful happens then Kamala Harris would take over and appoint a really good vice president so what is the big effing deal? Stick with the winners!
