Which celestial body is the most creepy?

@futurebird Venus, because it's scary how close it is to Earth in just about every way, but completely uninhabitable and generally terrifying. And the result of runaway greenhouse gases.

@futurebird Pluto is full of ghosts. I'm a big fan.

@lydialurch

Pluto is a pretty Lake Superior Agate or maybe a geode, and someday there will be a youTube video of some giddy little rock hound cutting it in half.

@futurebird I'm very conflicted about that idea. I would definitely watch though.

@lydialurch

You know it will polish up really nice.

@futurebird The Gem of the Milky Way, and they wanted to kick it out. Now I'll just take a tiny piece for the center of my tiara, thanks!

@futurebird moons are creepy, obvs, and Jupiter has the most of them. Easy vote

The sun. It's just a million-year nuclear reactor.

@futurebird The Scutum-Crux arm. No ship that has flow through the Scutum-Crux has ever returned. Creepy ... or what???

@futurebird I can offer the asteroid 2015 TB145, which looks not entirely unlike a skull.

I will see myself out.

@futurebird my "other" is ... None!

Wonderful, inspirational and frequently awesome. But not creepy!

@futurebird I voted Other for Europa. The icy ocean thing makes me imagine monsters beyond human comprehension creeping in the darkness

@luigirenna @futurebird
1/2
in Clarke's novel 2010 , there's a Chinese exploration ship which arrives at the Jupiter system before the Soviet ship, and they land on Europa's icy surface, and proceed to investigate the ocean beneath the ice.

Then, a huge, strange, alien life form comes up from the deep, attracted by all the lights, smashes through ice, and starts freezing to death and dying in the near vacuum.

@llewelly @luigirenna @futurebird Oh I just read 2010 again a few months ago. It was kind of painful - so stilted, full of ancient prejudices. I was glad to finish the story and stop thinking about it. Amazing how often rereading the old stuff forces me to confront things I'd ignored in the past.

@futurebird Mars. Something went down there. Something bad.
