🇬🇧 A Tory social media campaign suggests the party fears a landslide in the upcoming general election, as minister says they are fighting to avoid a "supermajority"

The Conservatives' latest advertising campaign appears to target potential voters, warning them that the Tories could be reduced to just 57 seats in the next parliament, even if picked up no seats ⏩

I have a suspicion that might not be as left wing as people think.

I think traditional voters are going to be in for a shock. And if that's the case, 's majority will be slashed at the May 2029 .

They're going to win, either way, but it'll be interesting to see how the term develops.

I suspect their honeymoon period could be quite short lived.

And what happens if gets in? Then controls the world, not .

Well I do not think you can blame if the gets in this Autumn, nor for what he might do. FWIW I think he has shot his bolt.... assuming does not keel over meantime

I am not sure & are adequate - I do think the new govt will be better, and will do good in terms of regulation and organisation but not waste time on stuff that costs money & is hard to finish - unlike with his idiocy

But is far away - events, dear boy!

In the , its more like right and further right, really.

sounds a long time but these next five years will fly by.

I hope has shot his bolt, but I certainly wouldn't bet money on it...sadly.

I know that Rachel Reeves is almost a Tory chancellor, and that won't go down well with traditionalists. ⏩

is - really - designed to swing from left to right like a metronome. Too much in one direction is destabilising for the public and can lead to extremists becoming popular - as we have with , or as I call 's party, Deform.

@JSharp1436

Well were it a metronome that would at least imply a degree of stability - but we have had terrible governance for well over a decade...

At least with it is unlikely that any extremist party - left or right - can get a majority

But there is no protection against incompetence and amorality

@jackLondon

It's interesting to see how long stretches of a single party never really work out.

It's as if they never knew how to run a country for any reasonable amount of time, but just get by for a term or two by blagging it before they get kicked out whilst saying "If only we'd had more time, we would've succeeded."

In short, none of them are capable of running a country, but are able to pull the wool over everyone's eyes just long enough before eviction.

@JSharp1436

If you say so.... I was quite happy with Blair/Brown (apart from the Iraq War) but they got blown up by greedy bankers in a crisis that was none of their making

Whereas the rule since has been a chapter of govt-made mess -

But any country where the same people are in charge for more than 15 years is not a democracy - whatever they claim

@jackLondon

Well, your democracy point is a good point. That's true.

@JSharp1436 They wouldn’t be saying a word, except to boast triumphantly, if it were the Conservatives facing a posible majority/supermajority; it would be all ‘the people have spoken’ kind of stuff. They seem a bit frit. Personally, I hope it’s a hung parliament with LibDem, SNP, Greens, PlaidCymru holding the balance. If Reform reduce the Tory vote even more, they will combine to become one farther right party, and hopefully be unelectable for even longer.

@harriettmb

I too am hoping for a hung parliament of sorts, but I think will easily dominate this election. But is right about a supermajority, although technically, a majority is a majority irrespective of its size (kind of), but a balance of sorts would be good, yes.
