A person wishes not to see any politics in their feed, and kindly asked me to put content warnings on politics.
I replied that this would be counterproductive to my very reason for being on Mastodon, so they blocked me.
I respect their decision, but would it not be better if the person could choose not to see boosts of my posts without blocking me and ending all dialogue?
Update: This IS possible via the web interface. Awesome!
@randahl@BeAware i had a self hosting user report one of my accounts since he did not like what i was posting and that it was partially done via a scheduling service
i was able to get my account back, but this entitled attitude of some users on Mastodon is problematic
With Ivory, a lot is lost, not to mention that a smartphone is simply too small to display or capture content meaningful. I have largely withdrawn from some writers because you can no longer communicate properly with each other. A smartphone is just fast food, but not like a Tillykke med fødselsdagen celebration!
@randahl They can mute specific words, or mute you for certain length of time. It is not necessary to block someone, or demand they use a cover warning. Some people bring their X behaviour to this place instead of evolving themselves.
@randahl Hashtags are the way to go. For one, because Mastodon works better if you follow hashtags rather then people/accounts. And you can define a filter to hide posts containing specific hashtags.
@randahl Well one can mute accounts as a default #Mastodon feature. But yeah I dont know what that does about Boosts, would definitely be good to have more options such as, "filter posts from ppl with # in their account if boosted to my timeline" etc
Btw in #Fedilab you can even exclude accounts you follow from your homefeed, that would IMHO also be a nice default feature, or in general making it easier to follow accounts and hashtags as well as to have multiple timelines based on that.
@Nickname@randahl I have the same problem with people who use hashtags wrong.
My only recourse is to block them right now so that next time I browse a hashtag, they won't show up, polluting my feed. I wish I can browse a hashtag and exclude people...😩
@randahl yeah, the apps are a bit here and there... Surprisingly the ones that just show the web ui in a webview are better in that they show all the options, not just the ones the developer deemed worthy of implementation.
@randahl@jago The mute feature is great and 100% this (or block) is the solution for them. You can mute but leave notifications on, so you are notified if they mention you. Or disable notifications too, such as if you are mentioned in a thread. And with varying timescales - like a few hours, or permanent.
Most apps should support it. Would be considered a lacking feature if they don't, I think.
Definitely not on you to change your posting practices. Others have the control over what they see.
@randahl@jago I love the mute feature. Muting threads for a while because they're too busy, or when two people I follow are arguing about something and I don't want to see it in my feed I can just mute them for a few hours 😄
@picard it is great. I personally love that I can mute sports events to avoid the 10000th post about some tournament which is very important to people in a country far away. 😀
I have filters set up to hide various words (either I don't want to see that subject, or I just don't want spoilers for a thing I'm excited to watch or play), muted certain people, we can disable boosts from people we follow (so we only see their original posts).
@randahl@picard@jago
Always post with a hashtag on your topic. It allows those looking for you to find you and those with mute filters to not hear that post.
If you don’t tag with # G-za or something, that’s on you. If you do and they don’t mute, that’s on them.
If this is a reoccurring issue, pin an explainer post for your own benefit. It is however, their issue so you don’t have to.
@MetGitarenEnZo that is a good suggestion, but it is not very convenient for two reasons:
Quite many of my posts use all 500 characters, and unfortunately hashtags are part of the count.
It would require me to add a politics hashtag manually every time I post which is not convenient. Of course this point could be solved if my app could do this automatically.
well there are instances that allow more, I have heard that there are "default" #Mastodon instances with up to 4000 or at least some the #glitchsoc for instance(such as the one I am writing from) allowing up to 5k characters per post.Since you are a commentator it might be worth looking for an instance with a few more characters.(Some apps also split up your post into multiple ones if you exceed the limit)
