There are two things that always bring me back to the politics and all the fucked up events of that time period. It was the first recent-past generation reaching adulthood that had never known anything other than a government that, for the most part, didn't give a fuck about them on any level.

This fan made video for Roger Waters's "Home." All the events in the little montage bring me back real powerful.

The Ghost of Tom Joad by Bruce Springsteen.

Rage Against the Machine played a show during the 2000 Democratic National Convention in protest of the two-party system, and despite pushes from the City of Los Angeles to force them to play a small venue across the city from the DNC, they were allowed by a judge to play across the street from the event. LAPD security measures included a 12-foot high fence and about 2,000 officers in riot gear. After the performance, numerous attendees provoked police, causing them to declare unlawful assembly, and a riot broke out ending in violence and arrests.

M137 , in Mazzy Star - Fade Into You (Official Music Video)
@M137@lemmy.world avatar

Kinda re-discovered Mazzy Star last year, extremely good! Lots of melancholic nostalgia.
I remember my mom listening to it a lot when I was a kid in the mids 90s, it was a hard time for her as she had just separated with my dad. Being a single mom, with me at around 5 years of age and my little sister at 3 years old she had found several female musicians with powerful music that helped her get through life at that point. These aren't specifically musically related to Mazzy Star but they are closely related in my heart, and all highly recommend, some of my earliest memories:

The Sugarcubes - Birthday
(I turn to a pile of mush when I listen to this, in a good way of course)

Angelique Kidjo - Agolo
(the whole album rhis is from, Ayé, is so damn good)

The Cranberries - Zombie
(No need to say anything here other than "holy shit" at the view count)

Thanks for posting!

This song bumps. One of my favorite songs by Kendrick; it’s so hard to pick one overall favorite with him.

Yes, it was a struggle to decide, but we can post others at a later time!

Great lyrics with meaning and production/beats are really well done, so went with this one.

Topics discussed were also vitial in deciding this, while having two parts in one!

Sylvartas ,

Agreed, I don't have a favorite from him, just a top 5 (m.A.A.d city, Swimming Pools, The Blacker The Berry, King Kunta and HUMBLE). But yeah most of his songs have great lyrics and beats, they don't call him the goat for nothing

foggy , in What are the bands that didn't get international recognition but still are absolute legends where you're from?

I'm American.

Kiuas never made it in America, and it was... By design.

If you felt like Iron Maiden needed an updated Finnish interpretation, you're in luck.

Corngood , in What are the bands that didn't get international recognition but still are absolute legends where you're from?

For Canada I'd say The Tragically Hip.

I'm not sure such a thing is possible now that fewer people listen to music from specifically Canadian sources. It used to be: commercial radio and music television, and both had strict Canadian content regulations.

I think there's still a chance for artists to be well known locally, but it would probably be based on where they play shows, and maybe social media.
